Unless there is a legal reason that the paying customer cannot have one

How about this one:

Apple need to have the infrastructure in place to support and warranty the iPad. Imagine if TNT drop one off a few days early and it turns out to be dead on arrival, unhappy customer calls Apple and no one can deal with it, let alone swap it for a new one! Not sure that's a legal reason why it won't happen but it's good enough...

Interesting viewpoint, although I'm not totally convinced that there would be any legal right to demand release of an item that has been specifically advertised as being delivered on or after a particular date. However, I'm sure you're right that many retailers do send out some items before the official launch date.

Are you planning on collecting your iPad before launch date if it's available? I'd be interested to hear if you do manage to get it. I'm sure you're as eager as the rest of us to get your hands on an iPad as early as possible, so I genuinely wish you luck in getting it. :)

Well once I can get the TNT tracking facility to work for me and provided that it is in the depot before Thursday evening, I'll definitely pop over and try to pick it up. I don't really see the point in bothering if it only arrives there on Thursday evening to be delivered Friday morning.

But I've been down the depot a few times before, so I have a little repertoire with the lady in the office, which can't hurt my chances of them sifting through a mountain of boxes for me!! :p

But then again, not everybody has a depot within five minutes drive of them, so I realise it's not so easy or time-efficient to just mozy on down the road to pester their couriers! I shall report back with the results if/when I get any.

Fair point, but they could quite as easily just say "call back on Friday and we'll deal with it." Besides, Apple's warranties are worldwide, so even those who brought US iPads into the UK could send them to a UK Apple branch to have them sent away for repairs before the UK release date. :)

I can just imagine the phone conversation. "Hello is that TNT".."Yes sir how can I help"... "Can you check if you have my iPad consignment number xxxxx. I would like to collect it a few days before its due"...."Sorry sir I cannot divulge that information till Friday..more than my legs are worth" :D

I'm not expecting my iPad before launch date, to me it seems very unlikely. Apple will have told their couriers to hold them back until the 28th and I doubt any courier is likely to argue. Apple must be a big client for any courier, just think how many packages they must send. Why would any courier risk jeopardising there contracts with such a big client, just to give you your iPad one day early (they don't even gain from this)? No one's that special, especially when money's at stake.

You may be able to pick up packages from depot usually but this is not a regular package is it.

Love to be a fly on the wall when that call comes in.. lol

At an individual depot with probably no more than a handful of iPads? Exeter is small, I wouldn't imagine there will be a mountain of parcels containing iPads and their peripherals. If it were a centralised depot where ALL UK shipments were being held, they'd tell me to hop it, but a small depot like this is a lot less likely to. :)

In all probability mate you can bet TNT have been instructed as per the delivery contract with Apple not to release any units prior to the 28th May or they will probably face a penalty clause of some sort.

No my head tells me we can't get them before 28th but I feel strongly that we should be able to if they are in our local depot. Nevermind if we've waited for like 4 months we can manage one more day

We had a few similar threads when the iPad was released here in the States. Some people thinking that they might be able to get them early. AFAIK not one soul got one before release day. So I would be shocked if it happened in the UK. These carriers aren't going to jeopardize their relationship with Apple and release any early.

I do sympathize with our UK brethren that they have had to pine away for their precious iPads for so long. The wait will soon be over, and I can say without reservation that the wait will have been worth it. Loving mine!

Well a few days ago I was anxious about getting my iPad for the delivery date. Now that we all have shipping notifications we are getting carried away wanting the iPad even earlier lol. Has anyone's TNT international tracking changed from Greece nonsense to something more credible? I'll definitely be calling TNT tomorrow. Also I tried calling my local TNT depot earlier today and they just transferred me to the main TNT UK number so they seemed a bit hostile on dealing with customers one-to-one at my local depot!

Lol, you guys still here....

Just to note, dont forget quite a few in the USA were delivered by couriers the day before.

Also in reply to other posts, it has been said they will try there best to stick to the street date of the 28th, and don't forget also, the bit of a fuss caused this week when it was supposedly going to allow the London store to open at midnight...something I dont know is still being allowed....if so then I'm pretty sure some on here will get it early.

And also, are these couriers allowed to hold it until a date specific??, I thought when major shipments like these were sent, that it, they get it to the customer soon as they can..maybe wrong though.

:p I had a nice Apple person tell me today that the TNT ones were all around the UK already at distribution centres! .. he also said the security around it all is unbelievably high!

I'm sure if I phone Apple 3 times I can get 3 different 'answers' about it all! lol

loopy (and getting loopier while waiting!)

Still no movement - order shows 'Not yet Shipped'! (3G 64GB + o2 sim + apple care).

Sitting watching your discussions on the fine details of tracking made me crack and I called Apple. The nice lady said not to worry my pretty little head and it will be with me on 28th. She also said all are coming from outside the UK. Stay cool and you will hear by Wednesday, she said.

I dont know how much this contributes, but may reassure lurkers still in the 'no shipping boat' .... or should that be 'no shipping ship' as there seem to be quite a few of us!

When I logged in earlier on the apple site, I clicked through to the track your shipment option, and to my suprise it said expected delivery 25/05/10

Now when I log on to the apple site there is no option to track my order and the UPS site gives me no info on where it is.

Did UPS give you info on where your order is before they took off the delivery date?

I am curious as to what other people's international TNT status says (about the greece thing). Maybe it is just a bluff?

Mine says:

Reference F700*****
Pick up date 04 May 2010
Destination VOLOS
Delivery Date 09:40, 05 May 2010
Signatory PAPAIOANNOU
Date Time Location Status
05 May 2010 09:40:00 Greece Others Shipment Delivered In Good Condition.
04 May 2010 18:56:26 Athens Onforwarded For Delivery

Can anyone confirm if theirs is the same?

lol there is nothing fishy about it. Its just old numbers being reused. I expect that its mostly only orders coming rom China that are working properly on the tracking system, which makes sense because they have a longer journey so the tracking starts earlier. Come this time tomorrow the orders from China will have reached Europe, and we might expect to see initial movement of orders originating from Europe. As for the ipads that are starting in the UK, Im not sure when they might start showing up properly in the tracking systems.

I don't know where you got that from. Other than the one post that was referenced above, that is bogus IMO, I don't remember anyone getting one early. I was one of the "fanatical" ones who was refreshing his shipping status constantly during the original launch. If you have a link to something that shows some who got one early, I'de love to see it. I do remember that there were some people who had earlier delivery dates showing for a while, but they all got changed once the shipment got the the local distribution centers.

Here in the States, The shippers had specific instructions to hold the shipments until the release date. In some cases the iPads sat there for a few days. I tried calling UPS myself to get it early and was told that there was a "shippers hold" on my order.
