I do feel this is a very subjective thing.

Once you see the difference it is obvious but lets be clear here...

The iPhone has the best screen of ANY mobile phone out there - its the highest resolution by far.

So ANY iPhone screen should look amazing next to any other mobile device.

Its just that the differing quality of the screens is the problem.

Ideally I want to change my iPhone for a phone with the 7459072 panel or a 5 series if I can... we just need to keep the locations of good screens coming!

How many of you here got good panels swapping it over at an Apple store? I mean assuming Apple can see the screens are not as good as before - and it wasn't done on purpose - then all returned phones should be refurbished and come back with better panels - but maybe that isn't happening!

If you wanna check your panel number then dial *3001#12345#* and press call then click on versions and you will see the panel ID.

I took the time to go around every 4GB demo phone in CPW/O2 in Brighton Churchill Square shopping centre and they ARE ALL the 7455232 LCDs!

This amazes me as I thought the 4GB phones would have the older BETTER panels but they don't which makes me wonder if Apple made up extra 4GB phone JUST to demo instead of using unpurchased stock.

It also meant that all the screens I looked at had a slight yellow tint to them although in the bright light of O2 it was hard to make out!

This really surprises me lots - unless the 7455232 is a cheaper screen so they put it on all the older cheaper phones as well?

Anyone else find this interesting? I still would like to hear from anyone else who got 5 series or 7459072 screens and where they got them!?

What an odd turn of events.

The morning before I went and exchanged yet another iPhone (finally getting a decent-screened one later in the day) I sent an email to 'sjobs@apple.com'. I didn't expect a response, nor did I expect anything to come of it. It was simply to vent some steam as I know that this email address is read by people at Apple.

Well, later that day I got a phonecall from the Apple store in the Bullring, Birmingham (which was mentioned in my email as having provided relatively poor service with a particular genius) - saying they'd set aside time with the same genius to sort out the problem, and find a resolution there and then in store. This shocked me - that email actually worked!

This was a few days ago, I later called them and said I'd had an exchange at CPW and that I was finally happy with the iPhone.

Well, today when I got home from work I received a phonecall from someone called Mark, who happens to be the Logistics Manager for CPW - he mentioned my email which had apparently been circulated by Apple, and that many people had returned iPhones with the same problem - BUT they'd described it in different ways and they'd yet to narrow down the issue. He asked me to clarify what I meant by the different serial numbers, and confirm where I'd purchased the iPhones from.

He mentioned the issue was being looked at by Apple with high importance, and he even thanked me for taking the time to email and collate some information about serial numbers - although he did giggle at me for emailing Steve Jobs, we had a laugh about that! He seemed really genuine though, and I'm extremely impressed that the email I sent has actually been taken seriously.

I did send it from my ITV.com email address as well, which featured my job title in the email signature - so I'm sure that helped it being taken seriously.

So there is hope that this will eventually get resolved - and it's definitely now being recognised as a problem.

High importance?

Apple should've fixed everything when the iPod Touch was released here in the US.

But, to continue to pawn off bad iPhone screens here and now in Europe...

Like we did with England, you all should've taken all the iPhones with bad screens and dumped them overboard into the river... ;)

It's disappointing that it's taken so long to be recognized as a problem. I actually just sent back my phone to apple so I can get a refund. I'm gonna have to settle for the iPod Touch for the time being. I don't think i'll have another go at the iPhone until the next gen is out, it's just been too much BS with the phone so far and it wasn't worth it.

Leemo - What screen did you get this time? and what week number?

Was it from the same place you got the other phones as I thought (unless they got a new batch) that all the phones would be "bad" in the same shop?

It's a week 43 and yes it's from the same place as several dodgy ones I had. The ones we were opening to find a decent screen were all week 43s. It all seems rather random.

Which model of screen did you get Leemo?

Interesting turn of events.

It's the 5 series screen - had an enourmous smile on my face when we found it. It soured my early experiences of the iPhone, but I've been so pleased with it the past few days so (nearly) all is forgiven.

I'm a bit behind on this, what serials do the 5 series sport?

How did you find that 5 series screen?

Did you open more than 1 box and do the version check or were you juts very lucky and took it home?

I sat with the manager in Carphone Warehouse and we opened 4/5 different iPhones until we found one that wasn't a 7455232. All of the 7455232 screens we looked at had the negative black issue and it was clearly visible on the 'please activate' screen.

Thankfully we got to a decent screen before we both lost our patience!

The panel ID is 5755136. Apparently these are the panels they used during the early stages of the iPhone launch - then different 7 series panels were introduced for whatever reason.

Panel ID is what I meant. Thanks Leemo. I knew the 5 is the early screen. The fact you got one is amazing luck.

Just make sure you get a Touch with a good screen - they're just as prone to negative blacks

I know people who've recently bought touches and have gotten good screens, also checked in with people on the forums and it seems that im less likely to get a bad touch than an a bad iPhone.

So you did the *3001#12345#* check on all of them? and it works on the activate screen as well?

What was the serial number of your new phone as well?

I just can't see that my local O2 store are going to go for the "open as many boxes" as it takes approach - I am extremely unhappy!

I have a 5 series screen but with one dead pixel. Do I exchange it for what will no doubt be a 7 series screen or am I best to keep it and ignore the dead pixel which doesn't really ruin the experience? I'm also disappointed to learn that the exchange handsets appear to be refurbished rather than brand new. When you have just spent £269 on a iPhone the last thing you want is a refurbished handset in exchange, especially within the first 14 days.

Does that version check work on phones NOT activated yet? I assume you do the slide for emergency then type it?

The problem I have is (as I said) if I return to O2 they won't open every box they have and even if they do - there is no guarantee that ANY of them will be good 7 series or 5 series...

I don't know what to do!

Yes the version check works on all phones inc the emergency calls only screen.

I know someone who emailed Steve and were simply told that dead pixels etc are unavoidable and standard to the industry :D No offer of replacement was made.

Personally I think I'll keep my 5 series screen rather than opt for a refurb.

Completely agree with you. In fact I think that this is an unacceptable practice, and rather shameful really. In my view defective goods should be replaced with something brand new and nothing less.
