I think I will call O2 and ask to speak to the manager tomorrow...

I am NOT happy with my screen looking bad when looking at dark scenes - it does look negative and although it is NOT as bad as some of the examples here its is not good enough!

Specially when I have a US iPhone to compare it to... I think I will show them the US phone tomorrow so they can compare it.

I have also e-mailed O2 customer support and complained and e-mailed the sjobs apple e-mail (not that I expect anything from that!).

I will ask that O2 open every box until we find a good screen ID panel and will see what they say.

I know at the end of the day I am being a difficult as arse customer but I feel I have no other alternative...

Leemo - I have to ask how did you convince the CPW manager to open that many boxes? and what happened to the boxes he DID open that you didn't like? and were they all 232 screens until you found the 5 series?

I'm also disappointed to learn that the exchange handsets appear to be refurbished rather than brand new. When you have just spent £269 on a iPhone the last thing you want is a refurbished handset in exchange, especially within the first 14 days.
Just had a thought on this. Would it not be possible to get a refund if you are within the 14 day period, and then buy afresh ensuring a brand new replacement?

I suppose that there may be complications such as the fact that you are already signed up for a contract and a re-stocking fee.

not trying to be contraversial, but my iphone is fine and loads of my friends and colleagues who bought ones are all fine, none have been returned.

is there a picture of the comparison between the US one and the UK one you say are so different ?

I have a 7 series which is perfect. i have not seen such a good screen since my old 480x320 sony clie.
There have been very few screen problems reported (out of the 10,000s sold) and there were some with the 5 series, so I don't believe the 5 series is the magic panacea.

I am sure that some folk have been unlucky and get a bad screen, but I think looking at 4 or 5 and rejecting all of them implies that you are looking for something that the iphone isn't. ?

Love to see the pics if you have them

+1

This reminds me of the MBP "grainy screen" "issue", where people were going through 6-8 MBPs looking for a "good" screen (search the forums on here, there were massive threads on it).

Assuming the problem isn't endemic to all iPhones (which it clearly isn't, as lots of people on here have good ones), what are the odds of getting 5 bad ones in a row, really? If I were spinstorm I'd be really careful crossing the road. :)

I have had 4 iPhones and sent them all back. I wasn't looking for a perfect screen, just something that I could happily watch my videos on, and that was impossible on all of them. I've seen what a good screen looks like, and my screens looked nothing like it at all.

I've seen what a good screen looks like, and my screens looked nothing like it at all.

All I can say to that is:

Thank god I have obviously never seen a perfect screen! Otherwise I'd also be on my horse in search of the Holy Grail.

Like buried treasure this seems to be driving some people insane…

I exchanged my iPhone today for the 3rd time (so now on my 4th iPhone), but
fortunatly the one today was a perfect 7459072 model. With no stuck or dead pixels or any other issues.

The first 2 had the negative black issues + stuck pixels (7455232) and the 3rd had dead
pixels (was a model 7459072 aswell). The final one today (model 7459072) I got from the o2
shop in stafford and its perfect :)

Ive been to 3 different o2 stores and all had at the minimum stuck pixels bar the one I got today. Which makes me think that it is harder to find a perfect phone over a faulty one... or maybe im just fussy. :)

I really don't understand what you're saying or how you interpreted my words. If you meant to imply that i'm being picky about this, have you gone through the first couple of pages of this thread and seen the photos that i've posted?

All of the screens i've had have been this way and why anyone would settle for a screen like that is beyond be. By the way, the phone on top with the 'good' screen is an AppleCare phone.

My phone screen isn't so bad I can't use it - but when I compare it to the US phone there is a clear difference - the blacks are negative - not so bad I can't see the screen but bad enough I can see the problem and the screen looks worse overall.

If no one had a good screen maybe I would accept it - but with people getting good screens why should I? it makes me think if I go to O2 and ask to sit there and open a load of boxes MAYBE I will get a good screen. So we will see...

I returned my iPhone to O2 again!

And the manager was not particuarly helpful - he agreed to swap it over one more time but said I should contact Apple if I am still not happy.

Of course I got another phone with off colour blacks and dead pixels - maybe worse than the one I returned.

But there is a twist - I did e-mail Steve Jobs last night and I got a call (that I missed) from Apple in the US!

I am waiting for them to call back and see what they say- I would guess they wouldn't call me unless they were going to try and sort it out but who knows?

IF all else fails then it may be a case of trying to get my money back in the small claims court BUT I am hopeful this contact from Apple will turn out to be a positive thing.

Just like Leemo the other day I did not expect anything from Apple by way of e-mailing Mr Jobs - it was just a bit of venting... we will see what happens but the message left for me did say they want to resolve the issue so I am hopeful!

I had a chat with a lovely american lady from Apple.

She told me that they want to look at my iPhone and get it checked by their engineers to see what is going wrong with the screen.

In return they will send me a new phone from Apple.

Obviously it is great they want to look into this problem and I am very impressed with the response to my e-mail.

My only concern is I get another iphone with another problem screen but I won't know until I receive it.

Fingers crossed!

I went through the same thing - "servicing" the phone and always got it back with "unable to reproduce problem". Every time they sent me a new phone I was hoping that this would be the one I would keep. Good luck! I hope you get your problem sorted out and don't have to return it like I did.

Well she said they are going to send me a new one right away so I don't have to wait for them to check the phone.

It didn't sound like they were going to "service" it - just replace it and look at what I sent them back.

But I imagine it would be a pain in the neck to send it back and get it back a few days later saying they can't find anything wrong!

Kind of wonder if I'm bucking the curve...

Bought a 1st Generation iPod Nano. People had trouble with cracked screens and scratching, but mine has been perfect (got a case for it - but it just makes sense to look after an expensive piece of electronics - Nanos are now half the price I paid)

MacBook. Overheating. Cracks. Discoloration. Sleep problems. Battery issues. Power adaptor cord fraying. Mine has been perfect (again I take care of it, but no more so than any portable I've ever used). I though the screen Ok - perhaps a bit narrow viewing angle - but my office provided me with a Dell to use and, while free of defects, is just god-awful in comparison.

Mac Pro. Some people have had problems with airport and bluetooth. Not mine. Solid as a rock for over year (while others continue to dither over buying one - guess they don't really need one :p ). Got some solid freelance work done on this baby - enough so that I could afford an iPhone :D

iPhone. Look like I've been lucky again. No faults. While there is conceivably a better screen out there (the 24-inch display I'm sitting in front of is phenomenal - but cost more than twice as much as the iPhone), the one I do have is excellent for such a small mobile device, IMO. I would not be surprised that after cutting the price by some $200, Apple is using less expensive components. They may have cut one too many corners - and they need to fix that.

I've never had a bad screen on anything. Its always a worry when buying a monitor, notebook, or other device that I'll get landed with dead pixels or other issues I read about. But I've never had a problem (where as others report multiple disappointments). Of course, forums like this one act a bit like gravitational micro lensing - you tend to get all the issues that people are having concentrated in one spot.

So far I've been lucky, and I really hope those who have having problems can get them resolved. There really really are "good" units out there somewhere. It is possible for Apple to get it right.

Just thought I would post a picture of the US iPhone and the NEW UK phone I got today.

UK is on Left, US right

DSC00158.jpg

as you can see the UK phone is definately not right and its my FOURTH phone with the SAME problem, not to mention they all had dead pixels!

Just some pics...

Just ripped "We Were Soldiers" off the air with my EyeTV gizmo. Got some nice dark sequences there.

Looks ok to me but its hard to tell as the photos are not that high quality.

Just out of curiosity has anyone got their iPhone from Apple's online store?

If so what screen did you get? I would think most people would go to O2 or CPW so I wonder what has been shipped out by them? (obviously I would like to know as when Apple sends me a new phone I would like to get a good screen!).

Come on dude, you'd be able to tell right away if he had a bad screen. His screen is fine and quite nice.

my id no is 7455232 not had any issues at all with the screen, bought from the apple store in glasgow!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D:D:D

But the point is it SHOULD NOT vary. And that thread is mainly US phones I would love to see UK phone photos!

There will always be varying quality in screens, and some bad pixel ones that get passed the censors (if there are any!). Don't you think you might just be unlucky?

I personally do not think anyone would notice the yellow tint unless they had a phone to compare it with!

Oh that's good - you had me 'worried' there for a sec that this was a serious problem. But if its so hard to notice that NORMAL people won't notice then that's good. Luckily I'M normal and don't go around comparing my phones.... Maybe that's cos my previous one was a black and white seven year old Nokia? Hmm

The yellow tint is not noticible unless you have seen a phone without it.

BUT the black/dark colours looking negative and dull compared is something everyone SHOULD notice as should they notice dead pixels.

The "problem" is that the iPhone screen, as I already said, is better than any other phone out there by such a margin that everyone is so amazed when they see it that they dont notice its problems - well problems with the panel 7455232 - not all of them but some of them anyway.

Apple are sending me a new iPhone and they are going to check its up to spec before they send it to me then I am returning what I have now for them to "capture" it.

I also think they may phone O2 in Brighton and ask the manager why he didn't let me open as many boxes as I wanted - which prob means I can't show my face in there ever again :p

Both the people I spoke to at Apple confirmed to me the phones were all made with the same parts wherever they were sent and that the screens although being different SHOULD all be the same quality and that there should not be any difference. There clearly is by looking at my photos and others who had the same issues so lets hope they sort it out.

But yes I do believe people are so amazed by the screen on the iphone that they don't see problems with it that maybe they would if they didn't know better... I mean funny/shiny blacks could be taken to be normal compared to other phones but when iPhones exist that DON'T have that issue then it IS a problem.

Now that is a huge generalisation… I work with colour and correct calibration is important to me. I am sure I would notice if my 7455232 series screen was not up to scratch.

Humm. ;)
Good luck! Although with your luck it's a high probability we'll be hearing from you again. :p
