The phones all come in batches so its logical to assume that where there is one good screen there are plenty of them - so apple in glassgow and o2 in edinburgh are good places to get iPhones! but what about the rest of this country?
.

Wrong out of 10 people i still speak to from the launch day and who were next to me in the Q i am the only one with a 5 series.

Obviously pixel issues happen with all phone - I expect that from time to time.

But colour issues/negative blacks shouldn't happen as the screens should be to the same spec specially on the same product.

To get two 5 series screens is amazing luck! Out of 4 phones everyone has been the same LCD panel... who knows what I will get from Apple but I really hope its not the same again!

Just to answer an old question the 4GB iPhones in the O2 shop I went into were week 43!

Tried the test pic on my phone...no black issues, did the dead pixel test and no dead pixels. I bought my iPhone on the June 29th release date. Hope all works out for anyone who was not as lucky.

I don't have a negative black issue on mine, and having just read this thread and checked the panel version, it seems I'm lucky enough to have got a 7459072. This was from the O2 shop in Cardiff on launch night.

I am still waiting for my replacement iPhone from apple I would hope it will come by Tuesday.

Of course if they send another 745232 then it will not solve the problem... We will see what screen I get when it comes.

I honestly believe that the small claims court is the best way to go here to get the cost of the handset back.

OF course no wants that as a solution BUT if O2 won't change the phone anymore and Apple won't either then it is the only way to get it sorted out.

I am sure if you changed phones enough times you would get a good screen but the problem is that companies/shops are not patient enough.

It is a pity that some people (such as those in the O2 shop I went to) did not sit down and seriously look at what I showed them instead of getting defensive and not paying attention... after all its not O2's fault if Apple send out bad screens so they should accept it and sort it out whatever that takes as Apple seem to be doing for me at this point.

I got an e-mail tonight from the lady at Apple (which on a Saturday AND Thanksgiving is amazing!) saying she would do her best to make sure I get a
good panel - I still don't know what exactly that means BUT it is reassuring at least.

For what it's worth I bought a second iphone today (for my partner) and it's fine. I got it from the Regent Street Apple store. It's a week 43 but I haven't had a chance to check the panel series number yet.

There are good ones out there!

I tried to watch an episode of 'Chuck' on mine yesterday and I noticed just how awful the blacks looked :( I think I'm going to have to try and swap this one as well. I'll try a different CPW store this time, or an O2 shop, as there's no Apple Store in Nottingham. Gutted.

Has anyone managed to get a decent screen from anywhere in Nottingham?

I am still waiting for my iPhone direct from Apple but I did speak to them today and was told that the iPhone was meant to have shipped already but had not and that they had chased it up and hope to sort it out soon!

Extra demand for France perhaps causing delays? who knows!

The lady also told me that they can't actually check the screens sent out as they come from the stock in their warehouse (wherever that is)!

But she told me if the new phone had the same problem that they would replace it again and that they were very keen to get my current phone and send it off to America to get the screen checked and tested.

So I am still waiting - If I am lucky (5th time lucky?) I will get a good screen and if not we will try again!

She did say that they want to look at my phone as no one has taken responsibility for the iPhone screen problems (although they did act although no one has had any before) and so they want to get mine back to the US asap so that they can fix the problems.

While I would have expected my replacement phone by now - considering last Wednesday I was told they would send me another phone... I am confident that they will get it sorted and hopefully this week!

To be honest I am not confident I will get a good screen because its down to luck but as long as Apple are willing to change it until I do get one then I am alright with it - in the meantime I will always have a working iPhone!

Your right! when I replaced it in the shop I got a worse screen as well...

But I have an advantage here - I am getting the new phone BEFORE the old one is sent back - so if the new one is even worse I can just send that back to Apple and keep my original phone.

In other words I can keep the best out of two - Apple want to examine a faulty phone and I don't see any difference between one I have used for a week and a new one direct from them - I just hope any new phone is NOT worse!

My UK iPhone is fine. It started out with two stuck green pixels but those have sorted themselves out. No negative blacks, backlighting is even. O2 store, Oxford (panel 7455232).

Having seen what you've done in this thread, I too emailed the sjobs email address, and now I have a nice lady from Apple dealing with my issues. So far she's just been saying how the engineers are interested in my serial numbers, but hopefully it will progress to being offered a new phone.

I've exchanged it at CPW twice in the past few days. The first one I got was awful - SO MANY stuck pixels that it looked like the night sky. This one is also crap, although there aren't as many stuck pixels, they are still noticeable.

One was a week 42, the other a week 43. Both with the 7455232 panels.

It's not too much to ask for that I get a decent screen, is it?

When I replaced mine, I ended up with one with a worse screen, I replaced that one, and ended up with a brightish screen with a stuck pixel, I just gave up and kept it. I got used to it in the end, but for some reason when you know it's there, it annoys you :(
There is a danger of becoming completely obsessed with such things.

Sorry to hijack the thread but can anyone tell me what the bad lcd panels are and what are the good ones?

Also is there an easy way to get the panel id without activating the phone?

The reason I ask is that I'm getting an iPhone for Christmas off my wife and am ordering it tomorrow but I need to check the phone when it arrives to make sure it is okay before I get it put away for Christmas. I do not at this stage want to activate the phone.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Yes to check the panel type slide for emergency calls and enter the code *3001#12345#* then select 'Versions'

Other than checking the screen for yourself there is no real way of knowing if your screen is good or bad.

I really don't think they'll let you keep your old one. When I had a phone sent to me, the applecare rep told me specifically to send back my old phone and that I had to keep my new one. After that THEN I could the the new one that I recieved replaced again.

Maybe you are right BUT... I am not dealing with Applecare I am dealing with Executive Corporate Relations - they e-mail me and call me virtually everyday - its quite remarkable how good they are! so who knows what they would say should the new phone be even worse but I know they have more flexability!

On that note my replacement iPhone is at Apple UK now - apparently they are going to do some checks and then send it to me... I did e-mail and ask what checks but no reply as yet!

If they are going to check the panel ID then great but the lady already told me the only way to do that was to open it and check it - so its a bit vague but we will see what she says tomo.

As for the question about good panels and bad ones - any 5 series panel (eg, 5xxxxxx) and 7459072 are good screens while SOME 7455232 screens are bad - apparently not all of them but it does seem 7455232 is the problem screen and the one I have had 4 times in a row!

Of course all the panels can have dead pixels or other issues but the 7455232's seem to be the awkward buggers!

ive got a 7455232 screen and bought my iphone on the opening day in an apple store and i cant see any problems with it at all. no dead pixels, no negative blacks.

i think the screen obsession could be more damaging that having the negative black issue and being blissfully unaware of it
