Serious question for all the responses of this type: do you think it doesn’t matter at all what you wear with a suit, or it does matter but an Ultra is ok? I can understand the latter argument (those who think the Ultra looks fine with a suit). I disagree, but it’s subjective.
The former point, I don’t understand at all. The point of wearing a suit is to look a certain way in a certain setting. If you don’t care how you look, why would you wear a suit to begin with? There certainly are cheaper and more comfortable outfits. I can’t understand going to the trouble and expense of wearing a nice suit and then pairing it with things that don’t match.
I understand your point. Of course I can only answer for myself. There is no definitive answer to this because the premise of your question relies on the notion of what you believe about how the suit is fitted on the body.
What matters is that:
- One is comfortable and confident in what they're wearing in a public space
- If you have been invited to an event - you respect the rules that are imposed by the host (i.e. black tie, tux, etc.) You are a guest and are there to participate with the etiquette in place. If you don't know the dress code for a specific invite, it's best always to ask.
Regardless of wearing a suit or whatever else you put on your body, you should always care how you look for yourself - not for others. I know those who love wearing suits every day when they step outside their house.
Boring backstory:
Back in the late 90's when I was working for an international bank in their Securities division. I wore suits and pants from Dolce & Gabbana, Ermenegildo Zegna who was then trending towards the fitted look and very tapered and cropped pants to let the socks show through.
I was being judged at openly and was nicknamed Michael Jackson. Regardless, I was comfortable and loved the look and never caved into the "norm."
Fast forward to the early 2000s, and the fitted suit has caught on and is now the norm. No one can think of any other type of suit style these days.
That's why there are fashion shows and events like the MET Gala - both to showcase and to market what the few fashion-forward are thinking and creating.
It takes years for everyone else to catch up and change the rules once again to redefine what is the new normal, whatever that means these days.
