As if Apple invented thin notebooks. It did not. Sony did it years before Apple and they do have a much better ultra portable laptop than Apple right now: VAIO Z is thinner, lighter and much more powerful than MBA.

LOL! You know, Sony got out of computers in the 80's (they made them only in Japan for a while) and back in in 1998. So essentially Sony's consumer computer play has only been since 1998.

You really should check your facts.

You're asking for too much.

Why even try to compete with Apple? Not worth the struggle. You can't win.

Yes. Everyone should just hand the crown off to Apple and grind their businesses to a halt, and let Apple be the only computer OEM on the planet.

Because, who needs choice, right? All hail Apple.

I'm hoping that all the other companies go out of business so only Apple will remain. I personally hope that one days soon everyone on earth will have an iPhone, iPad and a MBA. That would be so good!

If that were to happen, apple could jack up their prices to whatever they wanted to. Not a good idea. Without competition, prices won't go down!

Im not sure what you mean. Should we all get netbooks? I had a netbook and chucked it off a 7th floor balcony because it was a POS.

The Air is the cheapest Mac laptop.

Why pay less for an Air to get less?

Why pay more for functionality and performance that most users do not need?

Relative to the base 13" MBP, the Air gives up processing power, storage, expandability, ethernet, an optical drive, color gamut, battery life, and so on. In exchange, the base 13" Air is lighter by 1.6 lbs. and costs $100 more from Apple, or $300 more if you are in the US and near a Microcenter or similar store that sells the base 13" MBP for $999.

If someone is willing to give up that additional functionality, and to pay more, because something is a bit lighter and thinner, fine. There are many who are not.

Who would have thought ...

That we would be talking about other manufacturers not being able to keep up with Apple on price, and not just on technology, user experience, or aesthetics. The MacBook Air, the iPad, and for me at least, I know at the times I bought my 2 Mac Pro models since 2006, Dell couldn't touch their price for a similarly equipped machine. The one I bought last year is truly a thing of beauty inside and out compared to the top of the line Dell equivalent my employer bought at work and it cost less.

Many of us here were already of the mindset that the total value of some of Apple's offerings was worth what we were paying, but it's nice to have more mainstream examples that make the old, tired "Apple/Mac is more expensive" line sound like just more uninformed whining.

What I would really like to see is Mac OS lisensed to other OEMs and placed on these new computers. As 'that guy' who has to support every computer in my extended family, I've instituted a new policy that if you get a new computer that doesn't run Mac OS, I'm not helping you. It's your fault.

My question remains: Why pay more for an Air to get less?

no reason, unless you have to go everywhere with a laptop because your job does not understand the concept of "away" when a problem shows up - so having a bit less to carry around is worth it.

but really if you just home or out once in a bit - there is no reason like you say to pay more to get less.

It's surprising to me that the MBA is so cost-competitive, what with its fancy-schmancy unibody design and all. Is it because the battery, RAM, and HDD are unremovable?

ASUS UX21 - UX what?
Toshiba Portege Z830 - A portage..porte..Port something Z eight hundred something
Acer Aspire S3 - I want a Aspire? The Aspire what? The Aspire...uh I don't know... C3?
Lenovo IdeaPad U300s - Lenovo Pad U2 edition
Cryptic product names won't go far.

I know what you mean and I've been noticing it for a while.

I was very annoyed by this a few years back when I was shopping for an AV receiver. Somehow, the names all look like random 8 digits hexadecimal numbers with a hyphen stuck somewhere in the middle. It's very hard to recommend a product to a friend when you can't even recall the name.

i thought Macs were the most expensive???

Rumors and Lies! ;)

That's what these companies do now. They just look at Apple and make cheap knock-offs, and then wonder why nobody is impressed by their offerings. It's almost sad to watch. Some of these OEMs had really impressive products, but now they all seem like junk that cannot resonate or generate even the slightest excitement.

Knock offs, yes.
Cheap, NO!

I have noticed a trend of competitive tablets (for example) that cost about the same as like iPad, but with less performance.

They also look very much alike (*cough* Samsung).

Otherwise, completely agree with what U say.

The question is, how often does the average person or your mom need to run Office? Often enough to justify picking a W8 slate over another for that rare benefit? Honest question. I don't know the stats, I'm just asking. Because unless the W8 slates match the same form factor and battery life of a TouchPad or iPad I bet most people won't make that tradeoff.
*edit* Also, since it has Windows under the hood don't you expect most people, for right or wrong, to still fret about running an antivirus program? Don't you think the general consumer is tired by that?

Not necessarily office, she could use any word processor really. Well, assuming that she had any benefit in doing so. Further, thats not the only benefit. She "knows" Windows (what a joke). Sure, there may be better options for her out there, but i doubt she would go for them. In fact, the worse of a user you are the more important this "knowing" becomes (i would like to believe i have read research on this matter, either way it makes perfect sense).

Second, i wouldnt expect the w8-slates to offer anything but equivalent form factor and battery life. Time will tell though.

Regarding the whole A/V issue, i dont think that the average consumer really care, or know that he could be "better off" elsewhere. Further, i'd expect that MSFT has made significant improvements in this area, and that the new App store (whatever) will make things even better.

I wonder why it's so difficult for PC manufacturers to release a thin notebook for less than $1k? Can they fill it up with trail software and bloatware to help subsidize and bring costs down?

Oh, did I mention that the VAIO Z also has 1/3 to 1/2 the battery life of the Air?

Yeah! Who would have thought portability was such a big factor when shopping for a portable computer. Pfft! ;)

Joking aside, to each is own… and that's perfectly fine.

And that is relevant why? Are you trying to tell us that Apple had an ultra(mac)book running before that, or what?

Assuming MSFT doesnt **** up worse than they have ever ****ed up before, that is.

That is the assumption.

Niche is probably a stretch. But relegated more to enterprise and small business...

I don't know, man. Definitely enterprise for a few decades yet, but everywhere I go I see small businesses switching to Mac. Dentists, Law offices, electrical parts suppliers, non profits, I even saw a MacMini in a courtroom the other day. And I live in a relatively small town. Mac is taking over, slowly but surely, and the rest will be iPad. It's a little creepy actually.

This will probably happen at some point. Which is just another justification for staying with the mac.

All other tech companies should just give up. No more HP, Samsung, Dell Sony, Asus, Acer, Toshiba etc etc. Then that would kill Microsoft and make all Appleonians happy. World domination, total monopoly. That is what the goal is.

If there were no competition, we would all still be using Apple II computers. Without competition, there's no desire to win, resulting in everyone being a looser.

Why don't they just give up like HP? Pathetic.

Honestly if you're the competition you have to put your best foot forward and commit, goddamnit! Don't be ******* like HP.

Tell us how you really feel. Don't be shy...
