Oh my god. I’ve been waiting for high-powered ARM Macs since the A11 benchmarks leaked. That’s when I knew it was eventually going to happen. That much performance from a 5 watt chip — it was just simple math.

I’m still surprised the Touch Bar didn’t catch on. I tried one early and thought it was helpful with media authoring apps. But perhaps placement wasn’t sensible, it was more difficult to use.
The Touch Bar isn't actually a bad idea (although I'm not sure it needed to replace function keys), but Apple never really committed to it enough to justify a developer's investing the time to really support it. For example, why was there never an external keyboard that included the Touch Bar? It was such a small segment of users that actually COULD use it, that it made more sense for developers to just ignore it.

I do wonder if that’s the case how the $600 price gap is justified. Currently you get a more powerful CPU (6-8 cores @45W vs 4 cores @28W) and dedicated GPU for the money (plus presumably $1-200 for the screen size bump as other product lines also demonstrate). I think either they trim the entry price of the 16 slightly, or start it with maybe 1TB storage or 32GB RAM if they don’t want to do that. Alternatively the 14” might get more expensive, though I don’t think they will go above $1,999 starting price for it.
Well, feel free to post a guess. ;) That was just my guess after all, as I have no inside information. Perhaps you're right and the 32-core GPU will come standard on the 16". Or perhaps the pricing will be lower. We can always hope...

And in truth, it doesn't really matter to me, since I won't be buying one anyway. I'm interested mostly in an M1X Mac mini, a discounted M1 Mac mini, or else an M2 Mac mini next year.

I'm sort of sad that the biggest features will be the return of the ports they removed a few years ago. On the other hand, it will be great to have them back (and for the touchbar to be gone), and I'm thinking that the new chips are going to be smoking fast.

Huh? Someone’s not paying attention.

Remember how the price increased substantially when they added the Touch Bar? The price will be lowered by that amount now, right?

(Btw, I dislike the Touch Bar. It’s useless.)

Glad this is happening, another 2012 MBP retina user needing the power. Wondering how painful a 32GB RAM + 4TB option will be, and if you'll be able to order it anytime soon? It will be interesting to see if the leek was correct about 10 cores, everyone is solidly convinced of this. Hopefully they don't all come with white bezels.

I don’t think defining them as mistakes is accurate, and if you call them as such I wish all companies (and individuals) would happily change their minds if they discover they’ve made a mistake. I’m still surprised the Touch Bar didn’t catch on. I tried one early and thought it was helpful with media authoring apps. But perhaps placement wasn’t sensible, it was more difficult to use.
I hold Apple to a higher standard than other companies, when I pay this much for a computer. The only reason I call them mistakes is because I personally never liked these features, and I don't think anyone enjoyed the lack of SD card slot, USB-C charging or the lack of HDMI – none of these offer any advantage to anyone.

My problem with the touch bar is that it's not tactile, changing the volume and brightness requires you to look, press, hold, and drag which is 4 things instead of just pressing without looking which is 1 thing.

I also find the implementation buggy, with things like Safari tabs simply displaying garbage 50% of the time, and every app having its own weird implementation... I just resorted to making it display exactly what the traditional function rows would display, which of course defeats the purpose entirely and offers a worse experience as it's not tactile.

Worst of all the TouchBar completely turns off after a few seconds so the usefulness of say, seeing a seek bar while playing a video is lost. They shouldn't have gone with OLED (due to burnin) for this reason.

Will be interesting to see what's announced. Will a new Mac Mini make an appearance? Or bigger iMac? Or will it just be laptops?
Given that Apple likes to spend more time discussing products than announcing, this is likely just what you are thinking. The main emphasis will be the final redesigned MBP's. The enhanced Mac mini would allow a delay to the larger iMac to show up later.

Wonder how long it will take for new MBP's to go on severe backorder? An hour? Two? The "expert" at logistics never has enough product inventory upon release.

I’d like to see a MagSafe/USB-C hybrid port. It could be an inset USB-C port with a MagSafe ring around it. That way you could charge with either.

I think we will see the same thing happening with the redesigned MacBook Pros....the display will get just a little thicker to make room for the same 1080p webcams that are on the redesigned iMacs....

Centerstage. It works amazingly well on iPad.

Actually, if they could just lift the entire iPad sensor cluster into MBP, FaceID and all, that would be great.

I expect these to be the ultimate Mac laptops. It will be interesting to see what they put out, and what we can look forward to with Apple Silicon.
