so would I be completely stupid to buy a 17 inch MBP right now if I don`t absolutely need it yet
Nehalem/Westmere is well worth the wait after all these years of Core 2 based products. No, not completely. But it's probably advisable to wait a few months if you can. Normally I don't think waiting is worth it, but if we see Arrandale-based MBPs early next year it will be worth the wait.

My Core i5 750 is a noticeable leap from the old Q6600.
I thought you would've had an i7 of all things.

The $80 increase for HT wasn't really all that necessary for me. I got the Core i5 750 for $158. I could have gotten the same discount on the Core i7 860 but I still think the Core i5 is a better overall value.I thought you would've had an i7 of all things.
I've hit 3.846 GHz before. The F4 beta BIOS can also force the x21 on for all four cores all the time as well instead of based on application core component usage. Handbrake would get x21 but others applications wouldn't when using all four cores. Now it's everything gets full Turbo Boost.Overclocked that processor yet? My i7 920 running at 4Ghz is pretty impressive.

I would have thought that you'd realize that a Core i5 is basically a Core i7 with Hyperthreading disabled. (And a much less expensive motherboard and chipset.)
Since I've disabled Hyperthreading on my 2.93 Core i7 - I'd probably get a Core i5 today instead.
I can afford it but I didn't feel it was necessary. I can overclock as well but I don't have any significant utility from it. I'd rather have a quiet computer.i7 still seems an Eidorian thing.

My $25 Hyper 212 Plus is good enough. So why aren't you with watercooling yet then?![]()

Just a small note. The picture I included earlier isn't a Hyper 212 Plus cooler.
It is however a nice water cooling mod for the white P180 mini. It just shows what you can do with a Micro ATX case like that. I happen to own the black one.
Do apple generally release the information beforehand or simply realease the product straight up?
so after many long days of long reading this thread, i am ready to take the step and make my first step on the MacRUmors Forum (as a mac commercial plays during the Charger game).
How significant is dedicated vs. non-dedicated graphics for your average shooter?
It sounds like apple will be updating around feb or march. I graduate highschool in june, so that's when I would start telling my parents exactly what I want. Apple would not update three months after assuming they update the MBP line in late winter/spring would they? THat would seem ridiculous, as the buyer;s guide on here says the avg update comes every 8 or so months. THanks for answering my groundbreaking summary of a question.
Dedicated graphics are pretty much essential for any modern FPS. A 9400M can just barely run TF2 and cant run Left 4 Dead 2. My 8600 256MBvram card in my early 08 macbook can run TF2 on all high and pull about 20-30 FPS at 1440x900... if that explains anything.
I am REALLY hoping Apple gives us substantial GPU options. It's the one area they always FAIL in.
