correct I'm on that emergency screen. the at&t rep is trying to call Apple now to find out what is going on. I keep getting that error message. How strange right.

Please post back if you get an answer. As long as the plan has been added to the account, that's all that really matters but it would be nice if we could get past that screen and get the phone activated in itunes.

Yes I agree, but I will keep trying and I'll provide an answer as to what happens next.

Actually its apparently not strange at all, after searching around, it appears to be common for years, and the only workaround i can find seems to be a boot loader/jailbreak. I can get it to that activate device screen, click continue, it shows the summary tab and lets me sync music and contacts, but hover changes the phones screen. I can also receive calls and texts. Please update if it gets resolved.

How long did the whole process take once you paid him?

He usually gets it done within hours unless he's backed up but he will let you know. This dude was really friendly and helpful.
He called back a few hours later to make sure everything went good.
I'm happy, I upgraded 2 lines on my family plan so we all got unlimited now.

I just got it to work!!!

I hope my story will help some of you today.

I went to AT&T opened a new line with NO CONTRACT voice plan ONLY.

Went home and inserted the new SIM card into the iPhone 2G and plugged the phone into my PC with iTunes 9 installed (I downloaded from www.oldapps.com).

Activation screen came up and I clicked "Activate" and I had to choose "Existing customer..." and enter in all my information, phone # and last four SS#. Data Plan was automatic and gave me some options for some messaging plan. Then I had to enter in iTunes information and Bam I was activated.

Called AT&T to confirm I had unlimited data and they said "YES"

However, the phone would not get out of "USB connect to iTunes" mode. I tried everything you guys suggested and it did not work. I decided to take it to the Apple store where I spoke with the LEAD GENIUS and was told that only Corporate Engineers could activate the phone. I went home and called AT&T and had them transfer me to APPLE SUPPORT (APPLE SUPPORT IS FREE IF AT&T transfers you to them). Level 1 tech could not help me, so I was transferred to a Level 2 tech.

Level 2 tech told me that Apple erased ALL Original Iphone information, so if anyone wanted to use an Original iPhone 2G, they would have to contact Apple and the tech would have to enter all information manually (IMEI, Serial # and current active sim card number). After the tech entered in all the information I provided, I was asked to restore the phone one more time and BAM! Phone was ready to be activated for use.

That is my story people I hope this will help you.

Wao thank you. I'm on a level1 Apple technician right now. I will tell her then when she comes back on the line to enter my IMEI information and probably I'll be able to get mine working.

Awesome, Thanks a lot. I had heard similar grumblings across the web, but apples discussion pages conveniently went down for maintenance at the same time. This confirms my suspicions. Also, instead of calling att support first, you can call the apple activation line on the activation screen in iTunes, I'm doing this now, will update.

Cool chester let us know. Ask him to give me a call.:D

LOL PPfee I was not able to activated, gave up on the Apple rep and she told me I needed to perhaps return the iphone to amazon b/c it is no longer supported by Apple...

The rug rats were pushing me to go trick o treating and it was getting late...been picking up candies for 3 hrs :)

Well I'm already at the unlimited iphone 2g step, now how to get grandfathered into the unlimited 3G data plan?????

I tried changing my unlimited data plan to the $30/mo. but the system is in conflict with the iphone 2G unlimited plan and it will not allow me to make the changes online.

I'm wondering if I should call at&t to update my IMEI, b/c the network did not recognize the current palm device I'm using now.

Look at the print screen.

If you're already on the $20 unlimited original iphone plan all you got do is call AT&T and tell them you want to use an iphone 4, 4S or 3GS for example and that you would like to keep your unlimited data plan and not lose it. They will need the imei.
Then they will be able to switch you to the unlimited 3G iphone plan.

This looks way more complicated than I thought.

It is a major pain, I spend over a week and countless hours talking to tech support reps and got nowhere.
That's why I went the ebay route instead:)

I am a new customer and have used my 4S for a week. If I switch to 2g unlimited data and go to the store to activate the 4S could they deny me the unlimited 3g plan ? They can ask how I got 4S without activating and selecting a tiered plan upon purchase.

Nope, they dont care and dont go into that much detail.
All they do is see that you have the $20 original iphone data plan active on your account and they transfer it to the $30 unlimited 3G data on the new device.
You can tell them you bought the new iphone used or whatever but they wont interogate you. You're the customer, you're paying them and they're there to assist you and make you happy.

Do I have to go to a corporate store for this? The guy the nearest corporate is a pain to handle. Might as well go to a different one. Also, before attempting to activate the iphone 2g, do I have to somehow remove the 4S 2GB plan? One ebay seller told me that I have to call them to remove the 2GB plan or it won't work.

You can go to any AT&T store. Im sure they will take care of you.
The ebay guy I went to didnt need to have the current 2GB data plan removed, he took care of the rest. You can read more details on this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1266023/

Thank you everyone for your support. I'm finally on the $30/month unlimited data plan. I'm so happy to be back into it and will not do anything I don't have to to get removed from it so as long as AT&T offers it.

Now that I've seen this I'm wishing I had done this before I upgraded my 2g to a 4S hahahah, oh well...

Just out of curiousity, what about that thing that says your signing up for a new 2 year agreement when you try to activate a 2g?

Congrats again to Chester and Applejuiced. Chester did you ever get the 2g activated, i mean the phone it self working? Applejuiced glad that the auction went so well and touché to unlimitedsway for running a good business service and doing it well and respectably. I will refer all iPhone bearing friends your way, no one i know would want to go through the whole iTunes fiasco i just did and buy a phone but for the fair price you charge they'd be more than willing. Also unlimitedsway do you have any tips for getting the iPhone 2g past that connect to iTunes/ emergency call screen. I went through the whole activatio and got the unlimited data and finished everything, it can even sync with iTunes and receive calls and texts, but its stuck on that screen like it needs to be activated.

Feels good being part of this elite group of unlimited data users :) let's not abuse it LOL

Ps: PPFee I wasn't able to get the iPhone 2g activated past the emergency stage. It is stuffed in one of my drawers. Initially I was upset b/c it cost me $139 on amazon, but it is priceless having gotten my unlimited data plan back.

I don't plan to bother getting it activated, I'll probably just save it as a electeonic souvenir until the year 202+ :)

Yea it feels great, would be nice if i could use it on a screen that wasn't for just emergency calls tho. :roll eyes: You never got anywhere with the 2g. Also out of curiosity, I see you use a palm pre, what do you think of it?

I'm using a palm Pre plus b/c I had to temporarily go return my iPhone 4S at Apple store until the official factory unlocked version is released at Apple stores (didn't want to take chances with the "device only" purchase version of $801 including taxes :(

The Palm Pre Plus is a good little phone with webOS, but it is past it's time age and it is no match for an iPhone. It serves me well, but can't wait to get back on an iPhone. Speed wise consider the Palm "an elephant" and the iPhone 4s "a cheetah" that's a fair comparison.
