Does the iPhone 2G data plan offer 3G or HSPA+ on the iPhone 4S?
Yes 3G speeds but you will not be able to keep the EDGE data plan once you move to the 3G/3GS/4/4S. 99.999% of you will get moved to the $30 iPhone data plan in an automatic fashion.

I've been updated, account wise, to the unlimited 2g data for a while. Ive just kept it in the original iPhone and been playing around with it, feeling nostalgic. Dave if your around this is likely geared towards you. I am thinking of just cutting down the sim card and popping it into the 4s and then changing via CS. If i chat with customer service can they reactivate the original micro-sim that came with my 4s? I know when we used OPUS and CARE for account management systems when i was at ATT it allowed us to do this, but generally every new iteration of software that becomes more User friendy for the reps takes away a whole lot of advanced functionality, so I'm not sure if they can still do that. Just trying to decide the best way to switch back to the 4s. Maclook, AppleJuiced, Chester, and all the guys that pretty much went through this process alongside each other ( and of course Dave who helped us all get there) post and let me know what route y'all took as far as switching the sim or getting a new one. Im not asking nor am I worried about how to switch from 2g to 3g unlimited, as far as calling or visiting, really just whether I need to go get a new sim or if i can just trim it down and pop it in.

hey guys thanks for the great resources. I was contemplating buying an iPhone thru sprint but I think I'll go this route.
can someone confirm for me though if this $20 unlimited plan will retain the 200 txt mags when it gets upgraded to a 3G iPhone 4s plan?

thanks again

No, once you upgrade to the $30 unlimited 3G data the texts are. The $30 is just for data.
You will have to pay for texts separate.

Not the 200 plan but.... I took this opportunity to take advantages of the text options too. The unlimited text will always be an option, but they took away all the other tiers. I picked the 1500 txt plan along with the unlimited iPhone data, and you can keep that plan when switching to unlimited data 3g. It will just be 30 for the data plus the cost of the chosen text plan. I was under the impression you could keep the 200 txt plan as well, but it would be 30 for data and 5 for the texts for instance, this i don't know first hand though. I wanted to jump on the option for 1500 texts while I' had the chance, i can always change it if I'm getting close to my text limit or to my minute cap, since it would add unlimited mobile to mobile as well.

Hey, I know your right that the 30 dollar unlimited plan doesn't include any texts for that price, but for instance if 'you had the 200 texts with the unlimited 2g data, doesn't it still allow you to pay extra and keep the 200 texts? As opposed to if your not coming from that plan than you never have the option for 200 texts at all, not for an extra fee or anything. Im almost positive that this is how it goes, I sent a message to a friend who recently did this and I thought he told me he kept the 200 texts, Ill update when i hear back.

I don't think the system will let you do that but if you talk to a rep when switching your data plan they might be able to grandfather you in the 200 text plan.

Thanks for answering my question guys.
If you could let us know if you're able to retain the 200 txt option (as well as its price), that'd be great. I'll primarily be using imessage with perhaps maybe 50 texts in a month, so this would be great for me :D

The automated sweep will move you from the $20 iPhone Unlimited Data plan / 200 SMS Txt Message plan to the $30 iPhone Unlimited Data plan and the $5 200 SMS Txt Message plan.

If you had the $20, iPhone Unlimited Data plan / $10, 1500 SMS Txt Message plan for combined $30 then you would be moved to the $30 iPhone Unlimited Data plan and the $10, 1500 SMS Txt Message plan.

You ability to get a rep to make the SMS Txt plan change is just as random as getting them to move you to the $30 Unlimited data plan. It never hurts to try but be willing to keep trying...

Well as I posted earlier the easiest way is to use the newer combined Mini-SIM / Micro-SIM to make the transition. Not sure why you want to call Customer Care since you are looking to cut your own SIM. Just let the system sweep move you to the $30 iPhone Data plan.

Yes you can cut down the Mini-SIM using your old Micro-SIM as a template. Just cut with a very sharp knife and don't cut the Gold contacts.

Note: AT&T will not reactivate a SIM once it has been deactivated so that is not an option.

Dave

is it sad that im more interested in getting the $5 texting plan than the unlimited data? Lol

Cool, good info dave.
So you experienced that first hand?
Yes, 99.999% will be switched automatically within a short time after you start using an iPhone 3G/3GS/4/4S on your account that has the original iPhone Data plan / SMS Txt plan(s).

A very small percentage of specific account types will not be automatically converted but again it is a very small percent of the total account base.

Dave

Youre more than welcome 2nd name, & AppleJuiced!! Glad that i could help you all out!! keep enjoying that unlimited data!!

What I did was that I walked into an at&t store, was given a replacement SIM and then after I called cust. Service and they were so glad to upgrade me and leave me on the unl data for smartphone/iphone for $30/mo ok. Just call, they will not question anything, just make sure you tell them you do not want to loose your unl data that you are grandfathered in. Good luck, share how it goes.

Hey guys, just wanted to share my experience:

Recently created new at&t account and bought an iphone4s.

I used the already activated micro sim from the 4s and used it in a restored iphone 2g.
Itunes process worked like a charm and my $20 unlimited data plan was activated quickly.

Now I'm just waiting for AT&T to tell me that I have to switch over to the $30 plan, or ill just call later and get them to switch me. I'm hoping they switch me automatically so I dont have to beg them to let me keep my $5 texting.

Just some clarifications:
You don't necessarily need a new unactivated sim. I think as long as the sim hasn't yet been activated on a 2g, you're good.

You don't need a micro-to-regular sim adapter either. After trying to make one myself, I realized you can just tape the micro sim onto the iphone 2g sim tray.

Doing it this way saved me the hassle of trying to obtain a new sim card and having to transfer the sim data

No it doesn't^^

Also, what happens if it never notifies me to switch? I havent gotten any notice of this and i'm currently able to use 3g speeds on my phone.

If they dont catch it, am i essentially paying $20 for unlimited 3g service?

I have the same issue as "dannn " It says i have the $20 unlimited but i have 3g speed...also no text telling me that im goin to be bumped up to $30 unlimited. I have a feeling it will automatically switch to $30 unlimited at the next bill cycle though. Let me know how it turns out for you ...cross your fingers

All you guys gotta do is call or go to an AT&T store.
They will switch it for you no probs.

Are you absolutely certain on this? I've also read where your eligibility gets extended by 2 years by activating iphone 2g via itunes but I'm not positive if they're still doing this. Can you doublecheck your eligibility date and when your contract ends? Thanks :)

Hey y'all and sorry for not getting back, for some reason the forum hasn't been sending me emails when the thread is updated so i didn't see any replies till i manually checked the thread today. Chester lets see, On wednesday around noon I finally cut down my sim and moved it from the 2g to the 4s. I've been just waiting for a system sweep to either change my plan or tell me i need to change it, as of now its still on the $20 unlimited data (with my 1500 txts!!!) and most suprising of all to me is that I'm still getting HSDPA speeds on the 4s even though its not on the 4s plan, and still getting 2x what my brothers 4 gets in my home. I average 5 down and 1 up and max out at 6.3mbps down and 1.4 up. Interesting. I will wait a couple more days before calling them, i really want the system to just do it because i don't feel like dealing with someone and also want to keep the 1500 txts. Whats the longest this should take? Should i just leave it as is if they don't change it?

Lol:)
I don't know if you will be able to send and receive mms with the 2G $20 data plan though.
Thats correct no MMS, for me i could care less but Definitely a big down side to that route.

Absolutely certain, My renewal date was and is the same before and after this process. There is nothing in the iTunes activation process that even deals in any way with the contract aspect.
