I think unethical is the word your looking for.

But some people make themselves feel better by sugarcoating it as a 'loophole.' Those same people will grab their torches and pitchfork and decry the evil corporation if they try to pull one extra nickel out of them or tweak the TOS.

Maybe. Maybe not. It's AT&T's own policy to grandfather data plans to anyone moving from the original iPhone to new(er) iPhones.

But who cares? It's hardly like these companies are looking out for us.

I have done everything that the post says to do. I went to ATT store and got a new blank sim card. I restored my iphone2g and inserted the new blank sim card. As soon as iTunes recognizes the iphone2g, it automatically activates it. It just goes to the screen that says setup as new phone or restore from backup. I have done both options and I'm never given the option to select my ATT account. I am running iTunes version 10.1.1.4. Please help.

My advice would be to just to do it all over the phone since you'll need to call ATT to add data to your 2G anyway. Hopefully, you have another blank sim cause you'll need it and another micro sim for when you go back to your iP4. Once you get the sim call ATT to activate your 2G, wait some hours or a day and call back to do the same thing with your iP4. It should be as simple as that.

It should be asking you what # you want to activate with. Then it should ask what data plan you want.

Either you didn't restore the phone right or AT&T preactivated your sim card. Give up.

Hey guys i need help,

I did all the steps in this thread last night, i went through itunes and activated the iphone 2g using my att account information, i selected the unlimited data + 200 messages. The iphone 2g got activated, but i have no data plan. I called ATT and the rep tried to add the plan, but he did not have access. His manager tried to add the plan to, but he did not have success either. They open a case for me, and told me it should take between 3-5 days for them to resolve the issue.

When i log in to my att account online, i do not have any data option for the iphone 2g.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds to me like an At&t problem, just wait and see what happens in 3-5 days.

It also just occurred to me that they may be closing the loophole, but hopefully that's not the case.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssss, back in the game. Just got a text message from att saying "to complete the activation of your original iphone. Please tether to iTunes".

Just did that, it did not seem itunes was doing anything, my iphone lost signal it said searching, when it got signal back, the "E" for edge just appeared. Went to my online att account, and i have the unlimited data plan.

Drummr, how long should i wait before i put the sim card back on my iphone 3g?

Im so happyyyyyyyyy.

The way I did was went to an AT&T store. Told them I just bought XYZ and want to put the new device on the line to replace the iPhone 2G. They said that I'm eligible for unltd data because I have the unltd 2G data.

As long as your account says you are on the unlimited data you should be good to put it in the 3g any time. LMK if it works!

Let us know if you see unlimited once you add the sim to a iphone 4?

I have the feeling it will change to the 2GB data package option

Does anyone know if this will work with a non iphone.

My husband is in the market for a smartphone. Has an old flip phone now. If I can get my hands on a 2g and do the activate thing on his phone number, can he then go in and buy a non iphone smartphone and still have the unlimited data plan remain for a smartphone.

Yes I've done it on an iPhone, Inspire and Atrix.

I also picked mine up on craigslist for $90, but I sold it when I was done with it on eBay for $135. So I got unlimited and some cash:cool:.

Theres not much to look out for besides just making sure it turns on,the touch screen works, and the power and home buttons work.

Some on ebay list the touch screen as broken or dead pixels. Will this be a problem.

As long you are able to hook it up to iTunes it's OK. Ask seller if it will get into iTunes. Buy from a reputable seller even if you have to pay more, a seller with good eBay feedback and has done lots of eBay business.

If you don't care about using the phone for anything but the trick, then you can get one with a broken touchscreen because you don't have to do anything on the screen. All that is needed is for the phone to turn on and be able to connect to itunes.
