If you don't care about using the phone for anything but the trick, then you can get one with a broken touchscreen because you don't have to do anything on the screen. All that is needed is for the phone to turn on and be able to connect to itunes.

Thanks. Wish me luck.

Carol

Not really alot of hoops at all. The hardest part is getting a hold of an iPhone 2G. Once you get a hold of one it's a piece of cake.

This is true. Am tryiing to locate one in the Chicago area for a 'cheap' price.

Some other questions

Some of the iphone 2g's I have been seeing are listed as 'unlocked' and 'jailbroken'. Will this pose any problem when connecting to iTunes to activate the phone.

Thanks

Other than likely being more expensive, there's no problem with getting an unlocked or jailbroken one. Just restore in iTunes and go from there.

ok guys I need advise. I finally switched my sim card back to my iPhone 3G, but I have not received the famous text message yet. it has been six hours already. when I go to my ATT account online it's still showing the unlimited data + 200 messages $20 for iPhone 2g. i don't know what to do, I'm afraid to call customer service because I opened my account a few days ago.

what do u guys recommend?

thanks

Man I heard that this exact thing would happen then a couple days later you will see the 2GB for iPhone plan corrected on your account.

But keep us posted............. if this doesn't work then I guess you may have to sign up with T-Mobile or Verizon and get grandfathered into their unlimited plan...................

ok I got the famous text message twice and two emails, saying that an appropriate data plan has been added to my account. when I check online it is still showing the unlimited data plan for the iPhone 2g.

what's next, this is a puzzle. lol

thanks for all the posts

Are you able to get on 3G?

You have to get in touch with csr to let them know you have a new device so your data plan can be changed to iPhone data/smartphone data.

This is what I did...

Activated iPhone 2G via iTunes.

Called csr and told them I bought XYZ and would like to put the new device on the line and asked what data plans were my options. CSR said that since I have an unltd data for 2G I could get unltd data for new device if I wanted.

I said I'll take unltd data.

They changed it on their end. When I hung up with them I checked my account online and it was changed from iPhone 2G data to unltd iPhone/unltd smartphone data.

IMO I wouldn't do this process without contacting csr or going into a corporate store. The corporate store I go to the manager said he can do this for me in the store.

I did the whole process without talking to a csr or going into the store (besides getting the sim) and had no problems.

ok guys, I just checked my account online and I see the option for iPhone 3 g unlimited for $30. the data plan that is still selected is the $20 one. I selected the $30 one to change it, but when I got to the end I got an error saying that that feature was not compatible with the device they have registered in their system.

I don't want to call CSR because my account is very new and I'm scared they will find out what I'm trying to do.

You guys think the data plan will change automatically eventually?

If it was me I would call csr and play dumb. It appears csr doesn't look at past history. I would say I currently have a 2G and just bought an iPhone 4, blah blah. That's how it worked for me.

Unless someone has a better suggestion?

It should change eventually, but the csrs seem to know about the trick and can help you through it. At least that's what some people have said. If you don't want to call you can do one of the chat customer service things.

Edit: I just saw that you got the texts about being added to the right data plan, can you access data on the 3g? It may just take a while for them to actually transfer you to the unlimited plan.

Yes i have access to 3G, but I have had it available since I swapped the sim from the iPhone 2g. So I don't think having 3G would be a good indicator.

Last July, I went to an AT&T store and reactivated two iPhone 2g's and got the unlimited plan. I had no issues although it took forever cause AT&T csr's were slow and dumb and hampered by computer problems. After all the iPhone 4 hysteria died down, I ordered two and got my wife and I grandfathered in with a family talk plan. Was all well worth it.

IMO...Tiered data is for suckers. I expect more for my money, and so should everybody. AT&T is not your friend and they will continue to limit service at our expense. Thats reality.

Yessssssssssssssssssssssssss, back in the game. Just got a text message from att saying "to complete the activation of your original iphone. Please tether to iTunes".

Just did that, it did not seem itunes was doing anything, my iphone lost signal it said searching, when it got signal back, the "E" for edge just appeared. Went to my online att account, and i have the unlimited data plan.

Drummr, how long should i wait before i put the sim card back on my iphone 3g?

Im so happyyyyyyyyy.
Thanks

What version of iTunes did you use?
Thanks

Ok, how many times and how many different people have to tell you this? iTunes version doesn't matter at all, not even the slightest bit. The problems you are having are with your inability to follow even the simplest directions.

If your 2g activated automatically then one of two things happened:
1. You did not restore the phone.
2. The sim card you got was already activated.

Both of which have nothing to do with iTunes version, and have everything to do with following directions.

The manager at the AT&T store knows about the trick and helped me with one of my lines.

When buying a 2nd hand phone, is there any way to tell if it is a 2g phone?

That is correct. I cannot bypass the loophole.

Actually I believe the problem is that you CAN bypass the loophole.

Ok Im going to try this again. Please confirm everything I need.

Just purchased an Iphone 2g online.

Restore it.

Get NEW unactivated Sim card from ATT store.

Put sim in the phone, plug into itunes.

Run setup, activate existing line, pick the $20 data plan.

At this point I got an email from Apple/ATT about waiting for activation of the phone. Anyone else get that? It never seemed to recognize my 2g phone for hours and stayed on waiting for activation forever.

Wait to see if my online account management changes to Iphone 2g + $20 unlimited data plan.

Then use my sim cutter, cut the sim and put sim into my Iphone 4.

Wait for Text about new data plan?

Am I missing anything

Jesus Christ!!

You need a 2G, sim (new), iP4, and a microsim (new). If you guys don't understand it by now then there is no hope for you. Seriously. You don't need to do any cutting or anything cause YOU WILL NEED 2 diff sim cards (reg and micro). Most likely you'll have to call to add the data plan to the 2G, may or may not show up in iTunes.

I don't think both SIMs are needed. I did it only with my ip4 unactivated microSIM. The key point is that it's UNACTIVATED. You can use a regular sim and cut it or use a micro and tape it/use an adapter.

I'm at the same spot as you. I have reinserted the sim card to my iphone 3GS but it still has the $20 unlimited data instead of the $30. I see the option for $30 and selected it but it wont let me complete and tells me to talk to CSR. What next?
