stupid question but can I do this with a borrowed iphone 2G ? Meaning my friend has one and I don't want to buy a 2G just for this process. I do have an original untouched simcard that came with my old 2G which I sold years ago.

Yes you can, just make sure you restore the 2G.

Thats how I did it, my brother let me borrow his 2G so yeah.

When you get a new sim card, do you tell ATT that you lost the one that you used or is it just a blank sim card?

You can just say hey I need to go back to my old 2G (insert reason here) and it requires a new sim card. They should give it to you for free. But you'll also need a micro sim when going back to your iP4. I suggest getting that from another store at another time, they might wonder why you need all these sims. Your best bet is to call 611 when activating your 2G cause you'll need to anyway and it's easier from the start. They'll automatically put you on an unlimited plan.

Wait a day after you've got your new micro sim (since you'll need it) and call 611 to activate your iP4. Play dumb and say I was told to let you know I want to keep my unlimited data since there is no going back when you lose it. I've noticed the reps aren't nosey and ask very little questions no need to worry at all.

I have called ATT support several times but they refuse to see a difference between the 2g EDGE and 3g plans. They say that the iphones have only 200mb or 2gb. How do I respond to that?
Thanks

Also, I have already tried to activate my 2g via iTunes with my existing sim card but it just automatically activated it with out asking me for a data plan. Why do I need a new sim card when mine is working.

How many times does it need to be said before you will listen? It WILL NOT WORK with a sim card that is already activated. If you try with your sim card that's already activated, it will automatically activate the 2g, which you've already figured out. Go to at&t and say you need a new sim card for a 2g you are getting from a friend (so they don't activate it for you). It's not that difficult a concept.

your going to need a new sim to be able to do it. go back to the at&t store for a new sim before trying to activate through itunes.

Me said:
As others have said, you need a BRAND NEW sim card.

You need a new SIM card that has not been activated at all.

OP, what you going to need to do is get a new sim card from AT&T and connect through iTunes.

What I don't understand is how my current number and info gets transferred to the new sim card if I activate the 2g with a new blank sim card.

Thanks

iTunes asks you to sign into your at&t account and select which number you want the phone activated under. I also answered that in this thread. vvvvvv

You don't need to return it, just go to at&t and say you need a new sim card. They may charge for it or give it free, it kinda depends on the shop. If they give you a normal sim, just throw it in your restored 2g (make sure it says connect to itunes) and itunes should ask you to log into your at&t account and select which number you want it on. If you got a micro sim you will need to use tape to hold it in place in the 2g sim tray. Then it should give you data plan options, select unlimited + texts for $20. After you go through all that it should be activated (you may need to wait a few hours for it to activate, i did). If they gave you a normal sim you then need to cut it down to fit in the i4's micro sim tray. If not, just put the sim in the iphone 4 and after a while you should get a text saying you were put on the correct data plan for your phone.

If any of that doesn't make any sense let me know :D

Once activated, go back to AT&T and tell them to transfer the numbers on your old SIM to your new SIM. Then use the Phone Settings to import all contacts from the SIM.

Dude if you're still confused at this point, I don't think you'll be the type that will ever need unlimited data.

You need a blank sim card, easiest way to get one on Ebay. Pop that into the iPhone 2G and activate it on iTunes, it's an automated process. If it gets stuck just call AT&T and tell them you're trying to activate an iPhone 2G because your other iPhone is being repaired. They'll ask for the IMEI on the 2G and tell them you want unlimited data.

Afterwards you take that SIM from the iPhone 2G, cut it down to the MicroSIM size if you have to and put it into the iPhone 4. Call AT&T back and tell them you're switching back to the Iphone 4 and give them the IMEI of the iPhone 4 and you can keep your unlimited data.

If you already have your account in use on the 2G, I would suggest you go online and select "No data plan" so when AT&T automatically detects you don't have one, they'll (hopefully) add a data unlimited plan for you.

Seems like a lot of work to steal data. Are you guys that poor?

And before anyone says it, yeah it is stealing.

They're using official ATT sim cards. Official Apple phones, and an official itunes software with zero tweaks. They aren't stealing anything. They are taking advantage of ATT's grandfathering system. If it was stealing then it would have been patched MONTHS ago.

I called and spoke with an ATT rep to get on the 2g unlimited data plan and they automatically switched me to the unlimited 3g plan. It would be stealing if they were somehow staying on the 2g unlimited plan and paying $20 for 3g data.

It took me literally 15 minutes, but I guess that is a lot of work for someone of your nature. Is your welfare check coming soon?

How, in any way, shape, or form, is this stealing data?

You may want to rethink your choice of avatar...

Paying 30 a month for unlimited data is stealing?? Because that is what it sounds like the OP is trying to do (get grandfathered into an unlimited plan).

He was probably coming down from a "tethering without a tethering plan is stealing!!1!!1!1!!11!!one!1!!" tirade and was too angry to read anything in the thread.

I usually jump on people about the shady returns and what not, but I'm not sure this is "stealing," it's more exploiting a loophole. You sign up for the $20 unlimited for 2G, then you get bumped up to $30 for a 3G plan (that doesn't really exist any more). It's....something, but it's not stealing, and I probably wouldn't even say it's wrong; AT&T left the backdoor open for it, and now they're closing it.

Many AT&T customer service reps know about the loophole and not only do it themselves but will help you through the process.

I think unethical is the word your looking for.

But some people make themselves feel better by sugarcoating it as a 'loophole.' Those same people will grab their torches and pitchfork and decry the evil corporation if they try to pull one extra nickel out of them or tweak the TOS.

How is this anything but a loophole? It's a "by-design" thing. At&t says that if you have unlimited data on an iPhone 2g, you are automatically grandfathered into unlimited 3g data. The only data plan offered for a 2g is unlimited, so how is this unethical or stealing? Nothing is happening here that is not put into place and allowed by At&t. What crawled up your rear end?
