Unsuccessful atempts to get $20 unlimited data plan for iphone 2g

For the record, this never worked with an already activated sim card. You always needed a brand new, never used, never before activated sim card. Most people have good luck just asking for a new sim card if they tell the rep what they want (ie tell them you need a new sim to activate through iTunes with your iPhone). Short of that, you can always buy an unactivated sim. Standard sims on ebay are under $2 and micro sims are under $5, as of this writing, of course.

I went into a local store the other day and asked for a sim card for activating the iphone 2g but they would would not give me an inactivated sim card instead they would try to give me an already activated sim card. That could be just my local att store. I am really hoping it is decided whether this works or not anymore soon :( *crosses fingers*

They gave me one no probs at my local AT&T store.
I guess is who you talk to if they understand what you need to do and if they're willing to help.
But I'd hold off for now cause seems like the workaround doesnt work at the moment.
Lets find out if the its closed for good or activations will continue again soon.

Try telling them that you're not currently an AT&T customer, have an unactivated 1st gen iPhone, and want to sign up for a new line of service.

Also, I think if you call customer service and get them to send you a new SIM, they send it unactivated (so that your current SIM doesn't lose service before the new SIM comes in)

Hey everyone, been trying to follow this for a while and get this working and NOTHING I've tried has worked. I tried my old SIM card in an original iPhone, no luck, and I tried a new unactivated one and iTunes will NOT prompt me to select a data plan at all. I called AT&T and told them that and they all tell me it's not an offered option anymore, that since I didn't have unlimited before they got rid of it I can't add it. I've spent a good 3 hours on the phone with them, supposedly supervisors said I can't, etc. Can ANYONE offer any help? Hoping Dave or lordofthereef have some ideas or can help...

Did you not read above?
The loophole is closed for now.
We're not sure if it will ever work again.
Stay tuned and dont try it for now, it will not work.

No, didn't see that above. This must have just happened. I've wasted a ton of time on this ********.

Yes, for about a week now its been off.
Not sure if we will ever have this option again. unlimitedsway and lord will let us know if it goes up again.

Thanks for the response. I told the CSR I still want to talk to someone else, they said something about Resolution or Retention or something. Threatening to switch to Sprint may get me somewhere.

I doubt it but you can try.
I also spend many many hours trying to get this done and got me nothing besides frustration.

True, what was I thinking:D
lol

Ok good. Now start acting like others and start being all panicky, hysterical, uninformed, unable to spell correctly, and go off the handle on most threads without actually having read the entire message before you send out your scathing reply. Oh, and make sure you create a new thread daily with "....gate" in the title.

Good? Great. M'kay.

I'm sorry to see they closed this but it was a matter of time. I hope everyone who got the unlimited plan this way can keep it. I'm curious though, what happens if you activate an original iPhone through iTunes now? What data plan options does it give?

From all my attempts, nothing happens. I don't even get prompted for data plan selection. It activates and on a new SIM it will get no signal, then you call into AT&T and give them the IMEI and stuff. The only data plans you can select are their crappy 200MB and 2GB ones.

Have a strange issue that is quite hard to find information about due to the competitive keywords. My iphone2g seems to be able to activate a new sim without any account information, or any interaction with at&t whatsoever not even a logo. I have tried quite a few times and methods but my 2g just wont activate in the proper sense. Just asks if I would like to set up a new phone, press yes and it skips straight to sync the iphone and then its unlocked but not activated. Tried with new sim, new itunes account, deleted all backups, many restores, even new account on the computer, different computers. When I took it into at&t store they say they dont activate them anymore.
The phone was jailbroken once but I have done every type of restore I could find, dfu mode ect.

So I tried restore without sim unplugging adding sim and plugging back in and when it connects to itunes and within a few seconds the iphone shows a msg box that says waiting for activation but at that point you can now slide to unlock already.

Even tried setting itunes to activation mode via "defaults write com.apple.iTunes StoreActivationMode -integer 1" and after a restore and a blank sim when I plug it in Accessing itunes store bar shows up and then a msg box says this iphone has been activated you can now disconnect. what to do??? Iv already burned through about 8 new sim cards from 2 different att stores only have one left. Any suggestions?

This is very similar to what I'm getting. I suspect it's because the loophole may have been closed and the 2G can now be activated using regular data plans, without prompting you to select one. That's the only way to get the unlimited plan and if it's been closed, I'm worried we are screwed. So far I have not been able to get the plan at all.

No offense to anyone, but some of the new posters seriously need to read the thread. I am not talking the entire thread. I am talking the last 15-20 posts. It has been discussed ad nauseum that even blank sims are activating the 2G iPhone currently. At this point I think I'd be comfortable placing my bets...

My new, blank, SIM activated the phone just fine. That's not what I'm talking about. The problem is that there is no prompt whatsoever for selecting a dataplan, so I can never get on it.

Ok but did you read my post because I have tried many blank sims and I wasnt saying it doesnt work anymore I am just looking to see if anyone has encountered this and if so how can it be resolved. I know you have been very helpful on this thread and I have read as much as I could here and the original one on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20440783 but have not found people with this issue, or any resolution other than try another Iphone. Let me know if you have any ideas for the last blank sim I have, thanks in advance

It's doing that for all phones as far as I am aware. I have done so on ten different personal phones and it all goes directly to activated. It's worth noting that your blank sims are still good. The sims aren;t activated, so they can all be added to an account.

My point is that I don't feel this is a glitch. I feel this is ATT's way of shutting this down.

Exactly. The blank sim activates the phone... it is not "supposed" to do this. Or rather... it likely is supposed to do this NOW. This is likely ATT's way of shutting this loophole down.

Still nothing as of today. Calling in, I still get the run around, so I have not heard official confirmation that this is done, however the outlook is more grim by the day. :(

Anyway, Merry Christmas all!

Hello there to all.
I have not heard anything back from the individual that i referred to the other day. I am going to email them again tonight on the unlimited data matter. I will let everyone know something as soon as i know.
