I don't think Apple will want to complicate things with different CPU versions of iPad 3. What are they going to do then, show demos of both versions at the press event? They will pick 1 CPU, and advertise how great and fast it is.

I don't think Apple will start the iPad 3 at $579, that would imply that iPad 2 pricing stays as is. I think it's much more likely that the iPad 2 price gets cut to $399 or $449, and the iPad 3 starts at $499.

A $399 iPad 2 (if margins permit) would be perfect for competing on price against lower priced Android tablets, same as the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 now. But the newest model will still end up being the best-selling.

This pricing sheet is either fake or only applies to China.
I see the iPad 2 remaining the same and only being offered in the 16GB version (kind of like the iPhone 4), but only offered in the Wifi model. I think the iPad 3 will be offered in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models which all come with Retina Display, A5X chip, and 4G LTE.

I see the following happening in regards to pricing:

Wifi / 4G
iPad 2 16GB - $349 / NA

iPad 3 32GB - $499 / $629
iPad 3 64GB - $599 / $729
iPad 3 128GB - $699 / $829

They are making enough profit already, time to give back to the user...

lol. Apple's inovation is their gift. If they did not make money you would not have it in the first place. They are a buisness that answers to share holders. Not a charity.

Maybe it was because you defend why it should cost more and then go on listing features and how its worth 79 bucks....

and when it was pointed out every other ios device is upgraded to better tech, the price stays the same or lowers, you post something about price announcements not being credible...

Not true. The latest iPhone got more expensive. Just because ATT paid the higher price and not you doesn't make it $200. Sorry, you're wrong.

People, let me give you some Econ 101.

Price does not have to relate to costs. Once a product is built, the seller sells it for as high a price as he can to maximize profits.

If Apple can't make any more iPads, and yet people are still waiting in line to buy one, that means the price is too low, and raising it will cost Apple ZERO sales. That's the current situation. It's called a shortage.

If Apple were selling something you HAD to buy, like gasoline, or umbrellas in a rainstorm, you'd call it price gouging. But they're not, they're selling a luxury item, and luxury items are priced to get as many dollars as possible. Stop whining and go read a book!

Just spotted this on a chinese forum

So... A cow will be attached to the iPad?

Problem with higher prices

While the price hike maybe justifiable there is still a problem. Tablets are used primarily for just a few things: web browsing, social networking, TV/movie watching and gaming. It's not clear if higher resolution will benefit any of this. Games would do better but iPad's GPU will not be able to sustain reasonable frame rates for alleged new resolution (it's a desktop territory). There is no video content for this resolution. Web browsing and social media will benefit somewhat but not beyond what Android tablets have (1280x800). So, why would people pay extra for no benefit if they can buy an Android tablet with 1280x800 resolution for, say, $450?

Apple will only stop raising the price when people stop buying. It doesn't seem we have reached that point yet. As people seem to see Apple iToys a fashion items, the price could be $1,000 and idiots would still buy them.

Good for Apple, I don't normally agree with their pricing methods but on this one i'll back them all they. Con them out of all the money they can. Nothing is sooner parted than a fool and their money.

Not really seeing how this is any type of News.

No more than when Amazon or BB puts prices and release dates as placeholders for items that are coming.

I mean, you really think apple informs ANY of it's retailers how much the iPad is going to cost? No, they find out on the announcement day, just like everyone else.

So some retailer posted what they think the price is going to be on an UNANNOUNCED product and MR posts it as a news article so now everyone takes it as fact and has their panties in a bunch.

Great reporting...
This is how MacRumors roll. I think you either get used to it (which most people here have) or you find another site for your Apple rumours.

Agree with most of this. Except you do not have to buy umbrellas and gasoline. Price gouging is just complaining about the price increases from a shortage. Price increases in shortage situations are a neccessity to properly allocate a small number of goods to the most needy customers. i.e. Some people would be ok with walking in the rain if the price is high enough (think construction worker leaving work) leaving enough umbrellas for the people that really don't want to get wet. (think old lady that just spent $100 to get hair done)

I love all the ``deal breaker comments.''

Remind me of that when the iPad 3 Retina Display and other advanced features outside of the new A6 processor make it clear the price hike is meager.

That would have been tough to keep that price point with the retina screen.

I'm kind of bummed about the iPad 2 price not dropping. I thought they might drop $100 and kill every piece of competition on the planet.

I'm not saying don't make a profit...

But from a marketing point of view, it's bad press to hike up prices of a device that has that much media attention, it's not like the profit margin is not already high and most importantly, it makes them look bad to hike up prices as a company while sitting on almost 100 billion.

Yes, having that amount of money and a price hike has no really correlation, but that's not how the public will perceive it.

I'll take the higher price tag if iPad 3 comes with quadcore CPU + upgraded GPU + 1GB RAM + 128GB storage + 8M Pixel camera as retina display is given.

If they want to continue playing the same game of leaving features for the next year, they better keep the price the same.

ASUS and nVidia are now starting to target the $249-399 markets. You are still looking at IPS panels and 8-16 GB of storage.

Since you can see the future, which "advanced features" are we talking about? Let me guess......Siri!

Or are we talking about the high-resolution camera that really should have been in the iPad 2?

I really hope you're right, but I'm just curious to learn more about what you expect here.

A separate flight on March 5 appears to be planned to position units through Tokyo's Narita airport.

That part I liked; so that could mean we get a close launch in Japan ? The price hike don't come by surprise and is within expected range.
March 16th ?

I am betting that Apple sells the iPad II, iPad II+ and an iPad III. Some time a bit later in the year, they will launch an iPad III with 128gb however, it will not be ready at the initial iPad III launch.

The iPad II will be the budget device, the iPad II+ will be for normal users and the iPad III will be for professional use.

Then they can produce an even more compact, portable version, and call it the iPad //c. Note the change in numbering style just to stay stylish.

Of course, something new and totally game-changing will just render the whole line obsolete anyway in another couple of years. I hear it's going to be huge.

If nothing else, Apple can make some money selling mice and keyboards. I feel sorry for them sometimes.

RE: The price,

I was under the impression the iPad 3 was more for professionals and would start at closer to $1k. The iPad 2 was planned to remain the more mainstream product. I am surprised the prices are as cheep as listed.

Some people are saying the iPad 3 might be canceled and replaced with an iPad III. The iPad III will be exactly the same as the iPad 3, only with a different name.

 "Did they cancel the iPad three?"
"Yea, they're releasing the iPad three instead"

lol People actually talk about these products in person and aren't confined to typing about them.

Go find a dictionary and turn the pages until you get to j.....o.....k.....e.

If price goes up, I'll just keep my ipad2
Some of my friend do not accept 499., if price goes up, they for sure will not be buying it :(

$80 bump is a no-go for me. We have a 1.0....would love to get a 3.0 for Facetime and just to have the latest. But we are not spending $580 on a tablet with a mere 16GB storage size...and no, we are not icloud fans at all.

I am still hoping that they keep the current price points but I won't be shocked if there is an increase. I'm surprised that so many here are against a price increase. It will ultimately lead to greater profits for Apple.
