I'll believe it when I see it. Apple hasn't had a history of raising iDevice prices from year to year and I doubt they'd start now, especially with cheaper Android tablets like the Kindle Fire gaining some traction. I suppose it's possible that they'd continue to sell the iPad 2 at a cheaper price, but even when they've used this approach with the iPhone they haven't bumped the price of the newer model. The iPhone 4 had a retina display, much faster processor, new design, etc., but retained the same price point.

Again, you cannot compare the iPhone to the iPad. While the subsidized price of the 4 stayed the same, it's MSRP was $50 higher than that of the 3GS. So Apple DOES have a history of raising iPhone prices. Whether price increases become something we see with iPad upgrades has yet to be seen. One new revision certainly isn't something you can use to predict upcoming releases.

I'm confused. First you say you knew full well what was coming and then the next sentence contradicts you "knowing full well what was coming..."

I guess you really didn't know, but saying you did sounded good?

It's really not that complicated. "Full well what was coming" means he knew the iPad 3 would be coming in March. It does not mean that he knew all the features included in the iPad 3.

Now he's seeing the lack of a 128GB model in the price chart, which suggests to him that there won't be one.

I am still hoping that they keep the current price points but I won't be shocked if there is an increase. I'm surprised that so many here are against a price increase. It will ultimately lead to greater profits for Apple.

This is mostly an Apple users board, not an Apple stockholders' board.

There's a balance between price and demand and margins, obviously all companies are always trying to find the sweet spot.

The market share of Android tablets has been increasing somewhat IIRC, which is why this would be an odd time to introduce a new iPad and increase the price. It would be accepted and Apple would be fine, but it could put a bit of a dent in their momentum.

Unlike other manufacturers, Apple doesn't tweak pricing too much over a model's lifecycle (outside of the original iPhone.) The price they introduce at, is the price it's going to be until a successor comes out. It would be surprising to me for Apple to plan to sell the iPad 3 at $579 for an entire year. But we'll see.

Count me as one who doesn't believe that there will be a price hike. With the iPad, Apple wants to keep it increasing in sales. A price hike, no matter that many of you think it's worth it, just makes them seem even more greedy.

Also, before the first ipad's release, I remember the rumors about it being $1000. The fact that it came in way below that only made Apple look good.

According to some tech sites, there are a number of lower priced and higher spec'd tablets due for release, in the coming months. These could hurt their quarterly reports' announcements where they really brag about the iPad's increasing sales.

you gonna pay 500 for a tablet but not 579? lol get over yourself

The difference between 9.99 and 10.05 can be selling a lot and selling close to nothing. It may only be 6 cents, but in the consumers mind, it the difference between fair and seeing 2 digits = going hell no.

But why should they lower prices now, several months before competitors, when they can also lower prices later?

Also, while many people will be wowed by retina displays (which I believe others competitors will struggle match for the foreseeable future), few people care about "specs" in a tablet.

Its not the price increase for the cost of the Retina display that's the problem, Its charging 100 dollars for an increase in storage capacity that is practically costing them in pennies at this point to add to the Bill of Materials.

Technically you're of course correct. But what is more important from a marketing perspective is the end user price, which has not changed.

Look at various press events for iPods, iPod Touches, etc. Every year it's been more technology at either the same or lower price. I'm not saying it has to be that way every time, but in the year that has passed since the iPad 2 launch, I think they can absorb the improvements of the iPad 3 and maintain the $499 starting price.

I'm really looking forward to my first Ipad, this news just put me off.
I hope it's only a rumour , Apple should continue to enhance specifications but don't increase the price, there many tablets out there for less, people will look elsewhere if money really matters

As if Apple do not have high enough margins already. Sure they make great products, but at this price I think that people may start to turn their noses up at it. Time will tell, I hope this rumour is not true.

Sold my 64G 3G iPad 2 for $550 yesterday. Planning to buy 32G WIFI. Assumed it would be $600 and the wife will not be happy.

Wow, you got jacked on that price. I sold my 16gb iP2 wifi only for $400 cash here in NYC.

----------

Also, absolutely no way they increase the price. Give me an example of any Apple consumer product (i.e. non-PC) that has ever seen a price increase for a future generation.

The average consumer couldnt give a damn about a 'retina' screen. It means nothing to them. Apple will still need a cheap model, probably the iPad 2 16GB.

That is not true at all. The average consumer will look at the screen on the iPad 3 and immediately see its high quality. It will make lower resolution screens look worse.

Apple like keep the iPad 2 around as a lower cost model just like they did for the iPhone. In fact, that worked out so well, I'm sure Apple will do so. It is too bad that Apple keeps selling the 3GS iPhone because really people would be better off spending the extra $200 for the more capable 4S. The superior resale value of the 4S alone would probably make up for the cost difference and the consumer would get the use of the 4S for basically the same total cost as the 3GS.

So sad - too bad. Computers are now relatively cheep. My first Apple III cost me $8,800 w/512K of memory. The 5MB Profile hard drive cost an additonal $3,000. Most every other product I've upgraded over the past 50 years has cost more than the previous model. My first new Chevy Impala cost me $1,850, my first semester college tuition cost $114, and a carton of cigi-butts cost $2.50. It's called inflation and a basic fact of life. Besides, someone has to pay for the big pay raises we're demanding at Foxconn. If you can't handle the price, buy a Nook or Fire.

Lol I own my fair share of Apple products and currently own both iPads. However tha doesn't mean that I want o pay more if I don't have to.

I actually hope they DO hike up the price. From someone who passed on the 1 and 2, I was afraid I would have to compete with those who already own an iPad, while I was patient and waited it out until they got it right. Hiking up the price might deter some of those that would've been my competition. Better odds for me to get one on launch day and I deserve it since I waited this long without an iPad.

I'll keep waiting till they "get it right"... lol.. more storage space or bust!

I'll be pretty disappointed if there's a price hike, retina display or not.

Retina display is kind of something I've come to expect as an amazing way for Apple to stay ahead of the competition. A price hike is the antithesis of that expectation.

Sure, it was just a carry over, adding just a color. But you didn't explain the first three revisions of improvements with no price increase.

I wasn't aware I had to explain the first 3 revisions of no price increase.. and the iPod did undergo a pricing "restructure".. the price was increased and then set back down either the following year or during the year...

Oh no :( I've been saving for ages for an iPad 3 (sold my iPad 2 and everything) and I thought I had enough!

Damn it :( Gonna have to find another £80 or so from somewhere...

Heaven forbid you just wait a bit longer to get it.

So, you all want:

- A bleeding-edge retina display
- In a shell no more than 1mm thicker than an iPad 2
- With LTE
- Made by people paid a respectable wage
- Made by people with an appreciating currency

And yet any price increase is a deal breaker?

What "we" want differs from what actually is/might be:

- A bleeding-edge retina display - Almost certainly
- In a shell no more than 1mm thicker than an iPad 2 - possibly, though it should have no impact on price
- With LTE - not all models are LTE. Reportedly, the WiFi only versions are $80 more expensive.
- Made by people paid a respectable wage - nope, the Chinese workers only get $1.7/day
- Made by people with an appreciating currency - nope again

So based on reality, the price hike would be a deal-braker. Don't get me wrong, I would've happily paid $600 for a 32GB iPad 3 model with a retina display but a 16GB iPad 3 model for $580 is just a too much for too little. 16GB won't hold much "retina" content.

im afraid apple does see that even 64gb is a bit low for a tablet/media device. wich is more as a PC then a phone, so should hold more content.
But i said apple sees that....but i think they will on purpose leave it out to be put in the newer ipad 4 :(
all rumors and talk so far point to a max of 64gb.

I hope you are right and they keep it at the same price points. I'd still like to see the storage get bumped up to 32GB for the base model, but that's wishful thinking.
