If they continue to sell the iPad 2 alongside the 3, I doubt it will include the entire current lineup. Apple is not going to sell 24 different models of iPad concurrently (3 wifi-only, 3 wifi+3G, 2 & 3, B & W). This alone casts doubt on that spreadsheet.

They did this with the iPod Touch

They did a similar price increase with the iPod Touch in October 2010. When they announced the 4th generation, 8 GB iPod Touch, they raised the price to $229 (a similar percent increase to the rumored iPad price increase).

They then lowered it back to $199 last year.

The shipping rumor portion.

These iPads "could" be destined for tech companies for NDA previews. There may not be as many being shipped as people think.
That and the airports they are going to seem to be the hubs for news media.
NYC, L.A. , Chicago.

Not possible because they still must go through customs in AK or IN. They can't just be flown directly to these cities.

It doesn't matter where FedEx, UPS or Apple's shipments regularly go to. IF these freighters are full of only Apple iPads, then you can rest assured that special arrangements have been made to accommodate them. They would obviously need to go to secure holding areas until they are shipped to the various stores that sell them.

You don't know much about logistics, do you.

You made me laugh with your "you don't know much about logistics" comment. Based on what you wrote apparently all you know about the subject is what you learn from a UPS ad. i

It does matter because FedEx and UPS can only fly into one of their hubs set up for incoming international packages. Uncle Sam wants a peek. Those hubs are in Anchorage, Indianapolis, Lexington, and Memphis. From there they are routed to the final designation city.

Also, the service Apple uses gives FedEx and UPS flexibility as to when they put them on a plane - typically last in. This gets Apple the best rate possible. Apple isn't going to waste $ to "rush" product to the U.S. two weeks before launch. It's going to save every last nickel to get them here "just in time". That's logistics.

Prediction: iPad 2 drops price to $399 and iPad 2X (for 2X resolution display) is launched at a higher price than previous generation.

Nope. They won't call it an iPad 2X. The price will stay at the same $499 price point.

A price hike is basically Apple saying "Hey, lets turn the tablet market into the PC market, we are tired of dominating it so lets price ourselves out of it and become a niche product again. We're tired of accumulating so much money!"

Because Apple' struggling so much in the PC market, right?

I'll probably end up paying and getting it anyway, only because I have the money and I like Apple's stuff, but a lot of casual buyers are going to look at $570 and then turn around and see an android tablet at $399 or $349 and wonder if the iPad is worth the 50% to 70% premium.

See how that works? So far so good for Apple. I'm sure they know more about the likely buyers of their product than you do.

I really don't mind the $79 (approx. 16%) price increase over the previous base model since my salary has increased by 16% too from last year...oh, wait it hasn't.:(

Wait, Apple has to calibrate their price increases to overall inflation?

Since when are they a regulated monopoly?

If nothing else, Apple can make some money selling mice and keyboards. I feel sorry for them sometimes.

RE: The price,

I was under the impression the iPad 3 was more for professionals and would start at closer to $1k. The iPad 2 was planned to remain the more mainstream product. I am surprised the prices are as cheep as listed.

Some people are saying the iPad 3 might be canceled and replaced with an iPad III. The iPad III will be exactly the same as the iPad 3, only with a different name.

 "Did they cancel the iPad three?"
"Yea, they're releasing the iPad three instead"

lol People actually talk about these products in person and aren't confined to typing about them.

If it has a retina display, new/faster processor, and 8mp or more rear camera (at least if not better than the iphone 4s) and HD front facing camera (like on the MBP) then I would be okay with the slight price increase.

Hopefully some of the price increase is to help pay better wages for those factory workers.

Just as ALL other technology, it is outdated already by the time it is released and companies are already looking at ways to make the product better/improve it. iPad 2 was a HUGE change compared to iPad 1 with the cameras(2), processor(duel core), and thinness and many other great features, and there was not a price increase by one cent. So yeah, a slight increase in price for this piece of technology is unacceptable. I would be thououghly disappointed at Apple.

Since 16 GB only leaves about 14 GB of usable space, the 16 GB seems like a terrible idea, especially with Apple pushing these new multimedia textbooks that weigh in at 2-3 GB+ each. And don't forget many apps will be providing retina artwork that will take up 4X the storage space too, as well as iOS's own graphic assets, so 16 (14 or less) GB seems really small on this device.

If true it could change the market. That puts a nearly 400 window between the kindle fire and the new iPad for other players to insert themselves. At 499 it is much harder to get I. There but this would open things up. Even if they keep the two it still allows competition to slip in there

Actually quite the opposite. The 2 will drop down to $349 entry price and totally eliminate any reason to buy a $250 tablet that does much less.

Assuming the new models are more expensive, I can't believe people will pay for them.

I still don't get the lure of the iPad. It can't do what my Macbook does (e.g. watch videos and email at same time) and it is not portable cf. my iPhone for mobile use.

I understand its positioned in a mystical "third category", but it is clearly not designed with me and my needs in mind. I'm not "against" iPads, I just don't get them.

I'm curious - who will pay more (hypothetically, vis this article) for a new iPad, and what will it be used for primarily?

I use it as a portable TV so the res bump is a big plus for me. I sold my MBP because i used the ipad over it.

Its not for everyone, but for some its everything.

I would for once appreciate the prise rise too.

Apple demoed the original iPad for $499. The set a standard not only in price but also in quality and user experience. Neither of those have been matched by any respectable competitors even after these two very essential years in the computing and entertainment industry.

Now coming to the point, Apple sees an opportunity here. People are buying iPads like crazy. Still no match in the entire market. The hardware specs are unbelievably strong and the ecosystem is stronger than ever. A little price hike for the perfection, innovation and obvious demand is well deserve IMO.

(Typed on an iPhone. Apologies for spelling/grammar players.)

I don't understand the price-hike and definitely don't like it.

The prices didn't go up when apple replaced the iphone 3gs with the much improved and better looking iphone 4 with retina display. I jumped on the iphone 4 bandwagon right away because of that. Now with this price hike, I'm probably gonna wait a while and convince myself that I really want an ipad 3 rather than jump in (and I know I'll be in the minority).

I still think that my theory is right, especially with this post and the A6 post on the homepage.

We'll see an iPad 2 AND an iPad 3. The 2 will be running an 'A5.5' basically the A5 with a speedbump. It'll be the $399 entry model.

The iPad 3 will use the A6 and a retina display and start at $499.

No standard. Ipad 1 to Ipad 2 no major hardware change except chips which get cheaper naturally.

Iphone4 much smaller desplay not as much impact and price did go up if not subsidized.

Ipad3 much larger desplay == lots more $$.

So, you all want:

- A bleeding-edge retina display
- In a shell no more than 1mm thicker than an iPad 2
- With LTE
- Made by people paid a respectable wage
- Made by people with an appreciating currency

And yet any price increase is a deal breaker?
I also want a pony.
May be they should take a little cut on the profit than cutting the wages of Poor foxconn worker.
Actually, they've been increasing wages. Not sure if Apple has changed how much they pay Foxconn, that's never really come up.

If there isn't something more substantial (GBs) improved in the 3 than the Retina, and the price does go up, my son will be getting a 2 instead. But my uncle won't care, esp if it has LTE, he'll get the 3 with LTE and drop his home internet. (which is really weak)

I'd pay for it. For a retina display, and if it gets an A6 chip, then hell yes I'll pay. And if Apple also doubles on storage, that could definitely sugar coat the price hike for me.

If you don't own it, then I understand why you don't "get it". It's easy for you to say you don't get it when you don't actually own one to experience it day to day. I could go into great length why I love using mine, but explanations can only go far.

Aside from a nirvana of media consumption, high end mobile gaming, and internet usage, I also use my iPad as an invaluable complimentary tool to my work in audio production as a music controller, so its both work and play for me. Gotta love that.

So yea, I'll definitely pay extra if Apple treats us with exceptional upgrades. And again, own it, experience it, and judge for yourself. Everyone's needs are also different.

I don't see them remaking the 2 as a 2, why waste the money when they can just sell the 32GB iPad 2 for a lower price?
