Again, you can't compare the iPhone pricing to iPad pricing.. the iPhone is subsidized through phone carriers... Who is to say they didn't raise the cost and instead of the phone carriers raising the cost directly they pass the price increase on to consumers through data increases, etc,etc..

That is true, good point.

I guess we'll all have to wait and see.

If that's the case I would definitely expect the iPad 2 to live on in some capacity at a lower price point (though still above the Kindle Fire/Nook Tablet).

$399 for a 32 GB iPad 2 Wifi?

B

Not $399 for a 32 GB. More like $399 for a 16 GB or $499 for a 32 GB.

Also does anyone really believe that a company is this stupid to let some details out in the open. They are basically asking for someone to rob those shipments. That alone, forget the fact that the iPad hasn't been announced, would be enough to make Apple demand another company be used for all further shipments. Makes me strongly think that someone made the info up to give this company, which doesn't do jack with Apple, a little free press.

Sold my 64G 3G iPad 2 for $550 yesterday. Planning to buy 32G WIFI. Assumed it would be $600 and the wife will not be happy.

I mean, you really think apple informs ANY of it's retailers how much the iPad is going to cost? No, they find out on the announcement day, just like everyone else.

So some retailer posted what they think the price is going to be on an UNANNOUNCED product and MR posts it as a news article so now everyone takes it as fact and has their panties in a bunch.

Anyway, I doubt this is true as basically no one knows the price apart from the who are people closely involved in its creation. Anyone could of just taken a picture of a plane and printed out some homemade documents to get more website traffic.

Thank you. Whether it's believable/reasonable or not that Apple will be raising prices, I don't understand why Apple would be giving some random distributor in China this extremely sensitive market information. There is absolutely zero reason for anyone to know that information besides Tim Cook himself as he's polishing his Keynote presentation, let alone a completely different company in a completely different country.

That said,

Apple has MORE LIQUID CASH in their bank account than any other company in the world..

They will never go above $499 for the base model..... no need with all that cash..

Didn't you read all the big todo about large numbers and financial reports lately? Wall Street not only demands that Apple continue increasing its profits, but continue accelerating that increase of profits, and if they don't - if they, say, only increase their cash pool by 50% per quarter - capitalism deems Apple a failed company.

IF (because everybody cant print a list and post it on the internet) the price is increased it is a lost sale here and I will carry on with my old iPad.

Not that they aren't gonna sell but for me 499 euro is already my personal max for a tablet and seeing the possible (IF true) US prices that means 550-570 euro's just for the base model which is really high :-/

Every other update cycle

I'll wait until iPad 4. I'm on the every other update cycle (e.g. iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5).

If a retina level display goes into a MacBook Air, I'll do that next time rather than the iPad 4.

I don't believe Apple will actually increase the price. When was the last time that they did so on a new revision of a product? And I don't mean dropping the lowest model of something to make the base price more expensive (Ex. if they were to get rid of the 16 GB model, the base price would be more expensive, but the prices would remain the same).

Mac Mini - when it was first released it came in at £339 now its £529

They increased the price on the MacMini TWICE $100 each time and then finally settling it back down to where it is at now which is still $100 above what it was originally.

The Black Macbook price was increased after it's popularity. It originally was the same price as the white model.

The iMac used to be $999

probably more examples... also, need to count the many times they have reduced pricing on their products too. All I'm pointing out is the fact that yes they have increased prices before.

So, this is very plausible with the iPad 3 with retina display. I hate it hate it but I still think it's a matter of let's wait and see.

Why WOULDN'T they increase the price? They don't have credible competition yet and people are buying them as fast as they can make them. I'll bet supplies of the increased resolution display are constrained anyway, so make as much as you can.

While there is some truth to what you say, I don't see Apple raising the price at all, much less at those amounts. They are known for buying supplies in bulk in advance and shutting out the competition so that's not likely a major issue here. Last year shows that people will wait as long as they must for the product so speed of production isn't an issue. And as you say what is there really for them to buy from anyone else.

I can't help thinking that given this is a Chinese document that those prices are the dollar prices that will be sale prices in China. If the iPad 2 is staying on sale then it would likely drop down $50-100 from the current price so in the US would be say $399 and with the various taxes in China could be $499.

but, but it was posted on MacRumors, so it must be true!!!

IDK why MR posts fud articles like this. It's one thing to report on credible rumors, but if you are going to report on this, what about Joe Blow's blog that says it's going to be $199 for the new iPad? I mean, come on MR, lets at least use a little common sense before you post things and get your readers all riled up.

They can run that ad all they want, doesn't change the fact that you need both devices to match the functionality. Who wants to carry 2 devices?
Someone who'd rather have $300 in his pocket to spend on other things.

Given how small the Kindle is, I don't find this a convincing argument. Particularly since, I suspect, there are many iPad owners who own a Kindle or Kindle Touch for their e-reading anyway. You can easily drop two devices in a satchel or backpack without feeling overburdened.

Jeez, i was planning on buying the iPad 3 but at this price i can't justify it. Its several hundred dollars more than a brand new netbook and that was the only reason i had to justify buying one. I can replace my old netbook and buy a ps vita for the cost of 1 iPad 3 16gb. Horrible news imo. This will help combat the frenzy on launch day, maybe that was their plan from the beginning. Oh well.

Really? What about the iPod touch? That's not subsidized, yet when we went from the iPT 1 --> 2--> 3--> 4, we saw increases in performance, better screens, and lighter designs, without any price increase.

If I remember correctly the last iPod release going from 2010 to 2011 was actually a bit of a dud (or was it the one before that?) as far as "upgrades"...

In fact check out the teardown article :https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1259210/

$70/80 premium for retina? I spent that much on beer friday night. I was honestly expecting it to be $100+.

And judging by the amount of people who proclaim this to be a 'deal-breaker,' maybe I'll get my hands on one in May rather than June!! :D

One little tidbit he left out... iPhone = SUBSIDIZED!!

I have another tidbit for you: Without contract, iPhone 4s 16GB is $650, same price as the 4 was upto October ($650).

He does make sense, Apple seems to have a pattern of introducing the new proudct at old price point, reduce the old product price by $100 or so..

Next -->

I don't have a problem with the price increase. I mean I'm already shelling out $600+, another $100-200 is not going to hurt me to be honest.

If it's seriously a burden to you financially, I would really think of your priorities first..

If it's true i guess i'm not buying an iPad3 after all..
499 is the sweet spot

So, you all want:

- A bleeding-edge retina display
- In a shell no more than 1mm thicker than an iPad 2
- With LTE
- Made by people paid a respectable wage
- Made by people with an appreciating currency

And yet any price increase is a deal breaker?

You forgot the Wacom style active digitizer screen, 256GB storage AND it wasn't an price increase but in fact a price decrease.
