so this price hike was a news announcement?

Didn't know apple would go around revealing the prices they are going to charge for products they haven't even announced yet. ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

I hope this isn't true. Waiting for my first iPad. If true, I would consider MBA. I hope they keep the base model at $499.

Once you break that $500 price barrier you may as well look into getting a full fledged machine a la Macbook Air or 13" Macbook Pro...

"It looks like in Computer industry one has to be poor to make another Rich. "

Yes, because Apple is soo poor..

Apple's cash cow is apps. Making affordable devices is in their interest

I didn't know that this rumor was an actual price announcement....

how is this info credible?

I could post a blog saying apple will charge $399... does that make it true?

You really think apple revealed the price of a product they haven't even announced? Yeah OK!

With all due respect I was merely responding to a post.

;)

While I hope the price doesn't go up, if they are going to raise the price I think it is a good strategy to keep the iPad 2 at the current price, while offering the iPad 3 at a higher price. If you don't like the higher price you can always buy an iPad 2 at the same price as always. A customer comes in and says "why did you raise the price of the iPad?" "We didn't raise the price. The iPad still starts at $499. We have also added a model with a much better screen, that is slightly more expensive."

I doubt the price will increase. And they'll still offer a WiFi model.
Yeah, I mean I don't know for sure, but I would be very surprised if the base model ipad 2 wasn't their best selling model - getting rid of a wifi only offer and so increasing the starting price would put many people off even considering them I think.

Would be very surprised if they went 3G only - unless they brought down the price of them.

I heldoff on iPad 1. Heldoff again with iPad 2. I'll finally get an iPad with the 3. Retina is the selling point. I have no problem paying $899, if this is true.

Maybe it was because you defend why it should cost more and then go on listing features and how its worth 79 bucks....

and when it was pointed out every other ios device is upgraded to better tech, the price stays the same or lowers, you post something about price announcements not being credible...

Customers might look at those other options, but the 5 models of the iPad2 which cost more than $499 still sell like hotcakes.

Apple hasn't raised the price on the iPhone this whole time while including significant new technology each and every year. Price didn't raise when they added a front facing camera, retina display, etc.

Don't see any reason why they would start with the iPad.

Again, you can't compare the iPhone pricing to iPad pricing.. the iPhone is subsidized through phone carriers... Who is to say they didn't raise the cost and instead of the phone carriers raising the cost directly they pass the price increase on to consumers through data increases, etc,etc..

I can deal with a modest price increase (although I don't prefer it of course). What I'm kinda bummed about is the fact that no 128GB model was listed.

"You really thought there would be a 128GB model?"

I *expected* it...not just "thought there might be". It's time to upgrade storage specs - and yes, that's even with iCloud.

i totally agree!! iCloud doesn't save much space. you still have to DL songs to play. if you have wifi only you can't DL on the fly. apps are bigger. every time i buy a new app i have to delete stuff. i have over 1000 apps ganged i don't keep them all but constantly readjusting sucks. i have zero movies and less than 1 gig of music. 54gb's are apps on my iPad. i wish apple would allow different set-ups on in my iTunes. that would help but i was also hoping for 128gb. but it isn't a deal breaker. neither is an extra 70-80 bucks. this is a massive upgrade!! double resolution screen, better camera's, faster processor, possibly a6, most likely better gpu. how could it not be more expensive? of course they could go the sony route and loss or break even on the iPad sales and rake in the app money. i actually think this would be a good move for apple. if they lose money on the iPad but crush the competition and rake in the appstore money.

If I'm not mistaken, the 4S is higher. The 16 gb 4 was $599. The 16gb 4S is $649. Unlocked and off contract of course.

No, I didn't say it should get a price increase, I asked a question....

To the people not content paying an extra $70 for the added features, what is it that they want in the new iPad?

And I have been saying from the begining.. how is this news? and how is this credible?

I agree, but like I said, now you're looking at dropping $500 on "old tech"... once iPad 3 releases Apple will not be actively marketing the iPad 2.. it will be all about the iPad 3...

I think Apple will continue to sell the iPad2 for $499, if the price of the iPad3 is higher. This allows them to sell the new product for more, while continuing to sell iPads for $499.

What about ipod touches where it was seen to stay the same or get cheaper

Okay, but then make the iPad 2 much cheaper and still available for sale!

I'd probably be ok with the price hike if they raised the minimum capacity to 32GB and top end to 128GB. I just can't imagine 16GB giving you much usable space with a retina display and higher resolution cameras.

I'll just be hoping these rumors don't pan out, otherwise I'll have to find something else to spend my $500 on. I've already made it this long without an iPad after all.

I'm hoping they raise the minimum capacity to 32GB as well, but perhaps they'll stick with 16GB. I'm not sure how the cost of flash for a device like this compares to what we're currently paying for removable flash media, but it seems like they could go higher now without a problem.

this makes the iPad even more of a gimmick.

apple has some really good values now:

the base MBA is great value
the ATV2 is great value

the iPad is horrible value
the iPhone is horrible value

the iPod Touch is reasonable value

it's quite interesting

How is the iPhone a horrible value, when it costs the same as nearly every other smart phone of comparable spec?

One little tidbit he left out... iPhone = SUBSIDIZED!!

Really? What about the iPod touch? That's not subsidized, yet when we went from the iPT 1 --> 2--> 3--> 4, we saw increases in performance, better screens, and lighter designs, without any price increase.
