Makes complete sense to me. The dollar is dropping and I am sure the retina desplay is eating into the profit margins.

For example lets say:

16g wifi Ipad 2 costs apple $350 sells for $499 >> Profit - $150 per unit.

Now with the Retina desplay the cost increases to $425. Apple would be stupid to sell it at $499.

If the price increase makes 30% less sales or 70% of the sales at $499 than it is still better for apple.

profit margin at $499 >> $75 x 100 sales = $7500
Profit margin at $579 >> $154 x 70 sales = $10,780

So in this scenario Apple will only loose out if it knocks over %50 of the customers away from buying.

I don't think that will happen. I would expect a 10% to 30% drop in sales due to the price increase.

Or we get a refreshed iPad2 for 499 with the A5X, and iPad3 with A6 for 579

maybe they will release

an iPad 2S with processor A5X starting from 499$

and

an iPad 3 with A6 starting from 579$

I have another tidbit for you: Without contract, iPhone 4s 16GB is $650, same price as the 4 was upto October ($650).

He does make sense, Apple seems to have a pattern of introducing the new proudct at old price point, reduce the old product price by $100 or so..

edited: as someone else pointed out on previous page "Actually the full price did go up. When the iPhone 4 first came out for AT&T the price was $599 off contract. When the iPhone 4S was released the no commitment price was $649."

Introducing the iPad Pro w/ A6 processor. iPad 3 will get the A5 processor and stay at the same price with same existing resolution. A premium will be charged for iPad Pro and this is why there are. Inflicting stories about processors, prices and resolutions.

Apple has MORE LIQUID CASH in their bank account than any other company in the world..

They will never go above $499 for the base model..... no need with all that cash..

They would rather take a loss on the tablet initially, and make it up when prices drop on parts, and also on subs from 3g data plans and app sales..

Tell that to the shareholders. Cause they are likely to have much different feelings about how much cash Apple needs and should go after.

I recently sold my 2.5 yr old Macbook Air in anticipation of getting my first iPad.

If the new iPad doesn't have a 128GB option and the prices have been raised, I'll likely forgo getting the new iPad and will get a new Macbook Air instead.

I do find it hard to believe that some chinese site knows the prices over a week before they has been announced by Apple.

Yeah, you tell em!!! Instead of buying their 75% mark up item you'll be buying their 85% mark up item! WAY TO STICK IT TO APPLE HERE BUDDY!!!

Even though this doesn't feel right to me coming from Apple -- I still lean towards the lower cost iPad 2 and the same $500 starting point for the new model -- I can see how this pricing model could work.

It's the only part we HAVEN'T seen yet: the software. It's possible that Apple is ready to sell the iPad 3 as eating even a bit more into the laptop space through a couple of important software releases. They would have to REALLY take advantage of the iPad 3 improvements (maybe RAM gets a boost, too).

Look, third parties are already in place to help along: Photoshop and maybe Microsoft Office. Love them or hate them, having releases like that is a huge step from the iPad's original launch.

If Apple was to come up with a couple of key products that are real content-creation tools and that work best on iPad 3... I could see iPad 3 come at a premium cost. It could even be stuff that works along with Apple's desktop software.

Either way, if Apple is going to up the starting cost for the new iPad model, it will have something it feels is truly significant in use to go along with that Retina display. :)

These price increase will cause to not be able to buy one on Day 1. i might have to wait 2 months :/... atleast with a $150 price jump.

Hope this doesn't happen. that iPad is already pretty expensive :(

EDIT: i might then consider iPad 2 instead?

Apple products are like gas. No matter how much they hike up the price and no matter how much people complain, it still sells.

Given that the iPad has been such a spectacular failure, Apple would be wise to just drop the product. Or else it could lead to an unmitigated disaster on the future of the company.

Apple should concentrate on the iPhone, which has the potential to be a successful product.

In fact I strongly feel, that the March 7 event, will be an announcement that Apple is dropping the iPad, and introducing the next model of iPhone.

Don't feed the Troll! In fact, please just ban this guy now to avoid any further trolling.

Not liking the idea of a price increase. :(

So sad - too bad. Computers are now relatively cheep. My first Apple III cost me $8,800 w/512K of memory. The 5MB Profile hard drive cost an additonal $3,000. Most every other product I've upgraded over the past 50 years has cost more than the previous model. My first new Chevy Impala cost me $1,850, my first semester college tuition cost $114, and a carton of cigi-butts cost $2.50. It's called inflation and a basic fact of life. Besides, someone has to pay for the big pay raises we're demanding at Foxconn. If you can't handle the price, buy a Nook or Fire.

Yeah, you tell em!!! Instead of buying their 75% mark up item you'll be buying their 85% mark up item! WAY TO STICK IT TO APPLE HERE BUDDY!!!

When did they say they're trying to, "stick it to Apple"? It's just a better value to them. Jeeeeeeeeez. Some people on this site!

I think it has less with the dollar dropping and more to do with economic malaise around the world, perhaps including recent disasters in Thailand in the mix.

Lets also not forget that the Retina display was having yeild problems during production. Who really cares for the reason for the price hike, I'll take 2! :apple:

So, if prices are correct, I'm looking at $619.53 for a 16GB Wifi (iPad 3), compared to 533.93 for a 16GB Wifi (iPad 2). Hmmm, I'm not liking the fact that I may have to pay nearly $100 more.

The first Ipad was more expensive.

Would seem strange dropping the Ipad 2 in price but a more expensive Ipad 3. But the rumours said the cost of a retina say last year would have made the unit too much. I bet it's not a case of not having the technology last year just to expensive. I'd expect Ipad 4 to fall in price again if it's a small update. Ipad 3 looks the big update so thse suggesting it will be a "2S" are quite off. Retina, better cameras, better processor, better battery clearly it's worthy of a Ipad 3 brand.

I suspect the Iphone 4S only launched last minute as they knew the Iphone 5 wasn't quite at production stage.

The difference here is the display.

Apple would be able to keep the price the same if it was just a bump in processor, camera, LTE.

But the screen is more expensive and eats into their profit margins.

Surprised they cant get more memory than 64GB even the Ipad 1 had the same memory specs

I have been expecting this ever since rumours of a "retina display" cropped up. These displays surely aren't cheaply made standard fare (yet).

I'd be willing to bet that iPad 3 is going to have a starting price of $599 or more, while iPad 2 will either see a reduction in price ($399?) or receive some kind of a "speed-bump".

Maybe sth. like this:

- $399 iPad 2, 16GB Wifi
- $529 iPad 2, 16GB Wifi & 3G
- $649 iPad 3, 32GB Wifi
- $779 iPad 3, 32GB Wifi & 3G
- $749 iPad 3, 64GB Wifi
- $879 iPad 3, 64GB Wifi & 3G
