The current 13" MBP lineup is split into two: the low-end models use the 15W Intel processors and the high-end models use the 28W Intel processors with the beefier GPU. If Apple follows the same pattern, the Ice Lake processor mentioned in this article will go into the high-end 13" MBP model and the low-end models will get the 15W Comet Lake processors mentioned in this tweet.

SWEET ... are you saying with this tweet that the 13/14" upcoming early 2020 MBP will get 6 cores ... 6 cores and 12 logical cores?! Hott-damn baby!!

I am thinking about purchasing this and want to know if I would notice a considerable difference in performance from my current setup:

Late-2015 iMac 27"
4.0GHz quad core i7
32GB RAM 1867MHz DDR3

I would like the option to get up to 64GB RAM but not sure that will be available in the MBP 13"

Thank you for any advice

13” + scissors mech = my new machine. Touch Bar’s fine, don’t care either way. Mag safe would make it perfect.

Magsafe I think is dead.. but on m current 2015 I am using magsafe.

What are you doing that needs 64GB ?

Yup.

Right now, i have a 2015 that has a battery that is rapidly degrading. I'm not sure i really want a 16" machine, and unless i fork out about $4000 AU for one, Apple have nothing in their lineup that interests me right now.

I'd consider an air but a dual core in 2020 just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Like i'm about to be sick even thinking about it.

Hi,

Getting the 2015 battery replaced isnt that hard.

Good, good... Will order 32Gb RAM/512Gb SSD 6 core i7 model for sure.
Still hoping for Vega 10 dgpu option though...

The 10bit HEVC comes from Apple's T2 chip, not the Ice Lake. That will be not used. AVX-512 is also something rarely used. VRR is not very to Apple. If you're thinking these will have 144Mhz displays forget about it.

The GPGPU on these are crap and they won't be on the 10nm process, but the 14nm+++. Nothing about this as a product now or in the future is a smart move, not just for Apple but the entire industry. Intel is pigeonholed for the next 18-24 months with high yield failure rates on 10nm, never mind anything smaller.

Q3 Zen 3 arrives on 7nm+ for APUs, CPUs, Server CPUs, TR CPUs. By the time 10nm yields are fixed AMD will be using TSMC 5nm who are presently investing in over $25 billion in new 5nm Fabs to meet their growing demand and Intel's shrinking capacities.

The RAM is nice, and we can thank Micron for that.
The iGPU on the G7 suffix Ice Lake parts shows a big improvement. They are Iris Plus with 64EU. (The G4 are 48EU and the G1 only 32EU.) Ice Lake has Gen 11 graphics. The entire die is fabbed on 10nm, both CPU and GPU.

AnandTech has a pretty good write up.

I currently have a 2017 15" MBP with a quad-core i7 and 16 GB RAM. Naturally I've been eyeing the new 16" but I'm wondering if I should just wait to see what Apple does with the 13"/14" first. Because if I can get a quad-core processor and twice the amount of RAM as my current machine, but in a smaller and lighter package, then this might be a better choice.

Ugh but 64 gigs of RAM in the 16" is super appealing. I'm of the opinion that you can never have too much RAM, especially for the kind of intensive workflows and applications I tend to run. So I'm also wondering if I should just wait for that to be refreshed this year with 10th-gen processors.
I’m waiting. I figure they have to update the 16” with wifi6 and intel 10th gen in the middle of the year, assuming Intel‘s fabs cooperate.

My dream is a 14" MBP along the lines of the 16", with a scissor keyboard. Only other change I would wish for is an option to remove the Touch Bar, which I constantly hit by accident.
Yep. The touchbar actually makes touch typing WORSE. If they’re going to insist on keeping that thing, they need to provide some separation from the keyboard, or make it taptic (so you have to actually press it, not just touch it), or put back the function keys and move it above that.

But they won‘t.

I hope it comes with a 16gb ram standard. in most countries where apple stores aren't available, we can't do CTO to upgrade the ram. so they only sell the basic stuff.

I thought that's what you were supposed to do? Offer the declaration of the premise in the headline first, and then in the article explain what could or could not potentially happen regarding it.

I'm not a journalist tho lol. That's just what I've noticed in many news articles over the years. It's always been my understanding that journalists are trained to come up with the most eye-catching headline more than anything else.
The title says it's a certainty while the story says it's a possibility.

It's misleading.

10th gen technically, but the 45W H-series parts on the roadmap this year are Comet Lake 14++(+?) 😖

WiFi 6 support for sure.

yeah, but we know there’s no chance of AMD, so we get what we get. And I’d rather get that part than pay for what’s essentially the same part as last year.
Yeah it’s definitely be an upgrade, 5+GHz 8/16. Wifi 6 is good.

btw I misspoke Comet Lake does support LPDDR4X but Apple switched to DDR4 a couple years ago for 64GB. Wouldn’t be surprising if they went back to LP RAM with Comet Lake.

Does 13" really mean 14? This could be my new machine. Would love 16" but just too heavy for international mobile travel.

I expect apple to change the design of the 13" pro. Right now the 16" and 13" do not have a consistent design, which is very unlike apple. Apple will definitely release a smaller MacBook pro that has the same design as the 16". Same narrower bezels, scissor keyboard, separate escape key, seperate power key.

The only thing to be seen is how they achieve the consistency. Whether by retaining the same 13.3" display size and reducing the overall footprint, or by retaining the footprint and increasing the screen size to ~14".

I believe it is going to be the latter, as reducing the footprint would be hard. A smaller footprint would mean a smaller battery, less room for the new keyboard and less room for the speakers, worse thermal performance. Internally the components might have to be repositioned. From an industrial point of view, this would require an entirely new mould (rather than just increasing the thickness of the existing mould, if they retain the footprint) which would cost more. It simply doesn't make sense

As for the leaks, the leaks for the 16" increased only a few weeks before the launch. It wasn't until the 16" icon was found in MacOS. Most leaks are based on supply chain, that is, China. Right now, due to corona virus, the supply chain is barely functioning. Right now no analyst would risk their life just to get info on a laptop from someone working in one of the affected factories. This is a major reason why I believe that new laptops will be release during WWDC, in June.

So yes, a new, redesigned small MBP is coming.

Will this allow for better battery life? That's why I ended up going with the 15" instead of the 13" a couple years back, noticed a much better battery life

The best part of the Ice Lake is the 10gen GPU, which should be able to drive Apple XDR Display at full 6K.

The Titan Ridge TB3 controller will allow the XDR display to be driven at full-resolution so that should be standard on the new 13" MBP regardless of CPU generation.

My iMac routinely gets into the 20-25GB RAM usage when I am merely surfing the internet, especially forums.
You have a bunch of garbage software on your Mac.

Or they are using Chrome as their browser. :p

Why is Apple wasting their time with Intel processors and not using AMDs?
AMD is not an option in laptops. Battery life is not competitive in any device I've checked. They've improved, but Intel still does much better in laptops (although in that one metric, ARM-based CPUs blow both of them out of the water. Makes you wonder).
