Good. No one uses headphones on an ipad anyway. If you want to use headphones u should just buy the $160 EarPods.

Ah, & there I was thinking that I DID use headphones with my iPad! Silly me!
Or maybe I am the only one, & you just missed me when you scanned the World with your all-seeing eye!
(Oh and thanks for advising everyone what that should buy & use - I bet you're a barrel of laughs pre-Christmas!)

A

Now where is that beautiful notch so many of us swear by? If not there, why not? And regardless, where can I buy notch stickers to add notches to all of my screens? My 4K TV looks so antiquated without a notch! My windows look so retro without notches. #EmbraceTheNotch
.

I am actually thinking of designing a hair-transplant technique that places a dark square of hair between the eyebrows & extends down to the base of the nose.
I will call it "The Notch". People will complain about it, & then queue up in their millions to get one. ;)

You can have any iPad that you want so long as it doesn't have a headphone jack.

Sounds a lot like Henry Ford and the Model T.

Havn‘t used the headphone jack on my 10.5 pro even once but I get that that could be a problem for some audio based occupations. I‘m in though and can‘t wait for it acually:)

Battery life is more important than thinness. When will Apple learn?

I’d rather have 12-15 hours on my iPad than 3mmt thinner. And a better camera without a wart notch on the back.

Doubly true for iPhone.

So happy the iPad pro 10.5 was such a great product! I will be sticking with it for the foreseeable future. More than my phone or my computer I for some reason really depend on using wired headphones with my iPad.

Also I like using my iPad without a bulky case or folio. I've learned from experience with past iPads that having super small bezels on a device this size can be really uncomfortable (the small side bezels on the 10.5 are already pushing it).

I hope everyone else enjoys the new iPads. I'm sure they will look amazing! Just not for me :)

Ther are two Apple decisions I hate: the removal of headphone jacks, and the removal of all but mini USB ports on my MacBook Pro. Terrible, terrible ideas.

Y'know, I can buy their cock and bull about needing the internal space on an iPhone, but iPads are larger and are utilized in a significantly wider scope of scenarios, some of which uses the headphone jack to output audio without the need of toting additional dongles or adapters.

But whatever. This company is deep in their bubble and stopped caring about real-world usage long ago.

This company it's always the same, what you are saying about the jack has been told about ditching the floppy, ditching SCSI drives, ditching serial ports, ditching dial up modems, all well ahead of their times (yes, every other computers keep having them for years after Apple ditched, and hundreds of millions of people using them, the only reason one can say it's not true is not being there when it happened).

EDIT: they also ditched suddenly firewire, that they pushed as superior for years, despite many in their user base having a lot of expensive FW peripherals (hard drives, raids, very expensive external audio cards etc.).

I don't care about shaving .02mm off the thickness, I'd rather have a battery that's .02 mm thicker

I never understand the "just add more battery" comments. Even if they wanted they can't just "add more battery", surely they can't add 02mm X the whole iPad surface of battery right? More battery = more heat, more heat = an hotter surface, more heat = worst performance, more heat = need to cool the device actively. More batter also = more $$ and more weight, more $$ = just another thing would be bitching about, more weight is something nobody wants in a portable device (incidentally the battery is one of the components that has more weight).

I really understand that people will be missing the headphone jack. It is a shame for people that have invested in headphones or want to use pro audio equipment.
But: In this design there won’ t be any room for a headphone jack anymore. It is not like that if you open this new iPad up, there is some empty space for it. Apple is and has been very consistent about using all internal space available.
Should apple make a design that has room for a headphone jack? Maybe... but they choose, after 2+ years of iPhones without a headphone jack, to leave it out on the iPad too. Thinking that everybody has adjusted by now. For those that didn’ t? It is about time, in a years time all but (perhaps) LG smartphones won’ t have a headphone jack anymore.
Perhaps it is time to convert.... if not, go for last year iPad Pro ‘ s. They are still great and powerful enough.
There is no way back... if you want a new iPad or other tablet.
Sorry: just deal with it...

It's really something to watch this. Guy just doesn't get it lol
It is somewhat difficult to visualize, perrhaps it will help to see a photo; look at post 282 where you will clearly see that the headphone jack lives in the bezel space. The bezel on the new iPad Pro is too narrow to house the depth of the jack, which is about 13mm.

At a thickness of less than 6mm, there’s no room to stack the display and the jack. It wasn’t even possible in the 7.1 mm iPhone 6S.

I can see a whole lot of warped iPads at release, unless they use 7000 series Aluminium but that costs more, so doubtful. Apple is about shaving (literally) the cost off materials used, so when the new Pro iPads start to resemble book ends after a few months use they may consider spending money on new materials in an attempt to quantify the price they charge with actual build quality. Nope sorry I was day dreaming, it will be a bendy as hell even next year.

No doubt. Idiotic. I make my living as a video professional, and daily plug my Sony MDR V6 headphones into my iPad checking levels. Why those particular headphones? They are largely the industry standard, and a couple Audio Technicas and Sennheisers many pros use. While I use AirPods CONSTANTLY, they are not what I use for WORK, Apple.
Yawn. Your arguments are dated thin as any good Pro does use and has used adapters from the beginning of electronic audio time.

My iPad pro 10.5 is bent. I still use it, but the screen is not quite as responsive as it was originally, and there is a bright patch in one area also caused by the accident.

I actually was considering upgrading my barely year-old device specifically because I want one that isn't broken, and chalking up the cost to live and learn. But hearing that the new models would be even easier to bend is not a good sign. These things cost a lot of money, and while i make a good effort to take care of them, the fact is, they're handled constantly and go everywhere. They need some natural ruggedness.

And putting a case on it defeats the whole purpose of them making it thinner. Plus, it'd be thinner and stronger overall if the ruggesness was built in vs via a case addon. You end up with an overall thicker and not quite as strong device.
IKR! I tried prying open a stuck door with my iPad. Now it’s useless.

Except there won’t be a lightning port.
You keep typing that.

This point about the headphone jack can be debated until the cows come home. The fact is the iphone does not offer one. If you can't discuss this issue without labels then maybe one shouldn't be discussing this issue. It's highly unlikely that apple will do a 360 on the iphone, just like touch ID, it's gone.
“If you can't discuss this issue without labels then maybe one shouldn't be discussing this issue”. My thoughts exactly.

Perhaps this is the reason they are going for a more boxy design of the edges this time.
With some enforcements in the frame itself: acoustic chambers for speakers, and a battery that is covering more of the entire surface(more difficult to bend a big battery), it could be quite a strong device and not as easy to bend.

More people will be mad about the lack of a headphone jack than the number of people who would have used the jack if it were included.

So you're saying we should only get mad at Apple removing choice if we are personally effected?

First they came for the headphone jack
and I did not speak out
because I used Bluetooth.

Then they came for the Home button
and I did not speak out
because I found swiping fine.

Then they came for Touch ID
and I did not speak out
I'm a narcissist, and could look at the image of myself in the new FaceID.

Then they came for xxxxxxxxx
and everyone else had changed to other devices by that point
so there was no one to speak out for me.

Ok I've thought about it a lot and I'm definitely buying the new 12.9" Pro. The dimensions of 8.5" x 11" are the same as a standard letter sized piece of paper, so it's really easy to make a mockup of the size, lol. I put it under my 10.5" Pro and it's not really that big of a difference.

Most of the complaints that I've heard about the 12.9" iPad Pro are the sort of lever action of the heavier size and the width when trying to hold it. Being an inch less wide and a little thinner should yield a lighter device that is easier to wield and doesn't feel so clunky in hand.

I want the 12.9" size for four reasons:
  • Full sized iPad apps when multitasking
  • Better for drawing
  • Websites look more like they do on the MacBook Pro due to using larger breakpoints
  • I'm finding myself doing more photo editing in Lightroom CC on my iPad which has a lot of toolbar menus that take up space
I've avoided it thus far because of the size and weight. But this seems like a good way to get what I want without as many compromises.

Well, you are not an audio guy, by your definition. Those particular headphones are used because they're relatively cheap, produce a neutral flat response, and hold up, day in and day out. The Sony MDR 7506/V6 has been in production for 33 years for a reason. From the wiki: "Sony MDR-V6 is a large diaphragm folding pair of headphones, the initial entry in Sony's Studio Monitor headphones, one of the most popular model lines among professional audio engineers."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_MDR-V6
If you want to hear music and film the way the creators intended, you might want to try these headphones. Even if you never become an audio guy, it's always good to expand your horizons.

If they are studio monitor headphones, they are not good for listening to music and movie audio, because they are flat, they are good to make music.

Apple are still making over engineered devices running a ToyOS. It doesn't matter how powerful or sexy the new iPad Pros are, if you cannot run Adobe CC, or edit 4K video like a pro, or browse the web using the FULL desktop experience, then it is still an overpriced media consumption device. And the slippery screen means it's not nice to draw on with the Apple Pencil, hence pros use Wacom tablets or machines like the amazing HP ZBook X2 G4.

Agian, am sure this next iPad will be lovely, but all the creative work that powers the world will still be done on a MacBook Pro or Windows machine.

Well, say what you want, but this is probably going to be the most beautiful Apple device of all time… Probably Steve’s vision of what the Mac would become one day…

One can only hope. I remember when the current 10.5" came out a few people had ones that were not flat because they were slightly warped, hence my reticence at a even thinner device.

I see quite a few comments about 0.2 mm not mattering (between the more voluminous 3.5 mm TRS comments). It’s not about the 0.2 mm in this specific iteration but a progression over time to a thinner and lighter overall device. I saw an iPad gen 3 about a week ago and was blown away by how thick and heavy it was. If it weren’t for this progression we’d still be hauling those tanks around. When I see original retina MBPs I think the same thing, the new chassis is much nicer for a device that gets carried around. I’m fine with this iterative push to thinner.

A lot of people really need to learn to see past their own noses. I just don’t understand why "Productivity" is often limited to programming, excel, and CAD, as if no other type of profession exists.

So current 10.5" with the slim side bezels has dimensions of 250mmX174mm and these new dimensions with the same slimmer bezels on top and bot has 247mmX178mm
So if these are the dimensions its clear we will have 11" display instead of 10.5"
