The headphone I could live without, but I like to see one, and also full support for USB storage devices, and mouse/trackpad support. Unless it has these things it is not going to change the way I use my current iPad. Looks nice though.

More people will be mad about the lack of a headphone jack than the number of people who would have used the jack if it were included.
So now we're excusing Apple for dropping the headphone output on a larger semi-computer device? Seriously?

Indeed, and it might be said that the absence of a feature you want is worse than the presence of a feature you don't.

A lot of people really need to learn to see past their own noses. I just don’t understand why "Productivity" is often limited to programming, excel, and CAD, as if no other type of profession exists.

He has a fair point, though, IMHO. For these kind of applications, you need horsepower For being productive in other areas, like using the iPad for organizing , presenting or sharing stuff for example, you don’t really need this kind of processing power. There seems to be a bigger and bigger gap developing on what the Hardware could do - and on what the software will allow without major inconveniences or awkward workarounds.

So current 10.5" with the slim side bezels has dimensions of 250mmX174mm and these new dimensions with the same slimmer bezels on top and bot has 247mmX178mm
So if these are the dimensions its clear we will have 11" display instead of 10.5"
In fact the big iPad pro dimensions match a 12.9” + 0.9mm bezels. In the contrary, the small iPad pro width matches a 10.5” screen + 0.9mm side bezels, and height matches a 10.5” screen + 1.7mm bezels (or 11.3” screen + 0.9mm bezels).

So there are definitely some inconsistencies in the rumor.

edit : obviously, the bezels size is in cm, not mm.

No doubt. Idiotic. I make my living as a video professional, and daily plug my Sony MDR V6 headphones into my iPad checking levels. Why those particular headphones? They are largely the industry standard, and a couple Audio Technicas and Sennheisers many pros use. While I use AirPods CONSTANTLY, they are not what I use for WORK, Apple.

You make some really good points.

I think that this shows that Apple's product naming and positioning strategy is getting really out of whack.

Often Apple means 'really nice cutting edge consumer electronics product' when they use the word 'pro'.

In 2018, is it valid that Apple launches an iPad without a headphone jack after its 2016-18 phone models have lost the headphone jack?

I'd say yes.

Is it sensible to call that model 'pro' - when Apple's other pro products (Macs) have the headphone jack - and have upset a good deal of people with removing ports that they found useful?

I'd say no.

'iPad XS' and 'iPad XS Max' might cut it & make sense for this year as at least the names would be consistent with the 2018 iPhones - although the names are terrible. Mind you, so are the names of 2018's iPhones.

But iPad Pro when they're removing a socket that Pros use? Hmm.

With all due respect to Apple... They have comparatively few products compared to say, Samsung, yet their product names seem to have come from the current intern in the product marketing department. Some fresh thinking is needed.

Well, say what you want, but this is probably going to be the most beautiful Apple device of all time… Probably Steve’s vision of what the Mac would become one day…

Just nowhere near as powerful in terms of software, they really need to unify their OS's maintaining two is a bit backward now.

Has anyone on this entire spinning rock ever looked at an iPad Pro and wen't "Aww gee if only it were thinner?"
FFS honestly Apple needs to understand that thin =/= good. Its thin enough. I feel like if it gets any thinner its own weight will be able to bend it.

IMO, removing the headphone jack on a "pro" device, kinda stupid. Its an iPad, its not exactly cramped is it? The phone I can kind of get due to its size, but a 10 or 12 inch tablet? If they removed the jack to make room for a bigger battery sure why not, but just to make an already thin device slightly thinner? Just absolute stupid form over function there.

I'll be interested to see if theres a bendgate for the new iPad Pro.

Maybe it needs to be thinner so that you immediately feel the need to buy a new case for it (hopefully from one Apple Inc)?

In all honesty, I suspect that the iPad needs to be thinner as the the keyboard will be slightly thicker as it'll be upgraded & have a trackpad on.

Therefore Apple is optimising the iPad's weight and thickness to be balanced for the accessory that Apple suspects that everyone will be buying.

its too little gain on height for a 10.5" and the new one also have bigger width so it will be closer to 11" than 10.5". Im talking only for the smaller one...the bigger one its clear that has smaller
width and height so it will keep the 12.9"

Clearly you don't do any gaming, or audio recording. Wireless headphones cannot be used with those activities due to lag. If Apple has come up with a low-latency technology to incorporate into their devices that's one thing, but otherwise it's a problem. Sound recording remains a problem as well since the fidelity over current BT technology is in no way equivalent to professional audio needs.

No I certainly don’t. Real gaming isn’t done on phones or iPads. There are proper stations for that if I wanted to play proper games

Don’t disagree on audio recording but my post was about my needs not the general public who may have needs for that.

We all use our devices differently after all

I think you misunderstood what I said.
The dimensions, for the small iPad pro only, are inconsistent with a constant bezel size, whatever the screen dimensions.

I agree: this will be the new iPad , and... the rumored sub $1000 MacBook (with the new smart/keyboard cover).

Wireless headphones don’t work for professional audio/video editing due to the slight delay.

(And delaying video to match the audio only works for playback, not editing.)

I was under the impression Apple wanted to expand professional use of the iPad Pro. The 3.5mm port removal, if true, only diminishes it.

But no matter, Macs still accomplish the job with aplomb. For now.

I wonder with BT 5 and Apple's own audio controller chips, if they've reduced the latency?

BTW I don't know if this is possible or even acceptable to anyone doing professional audio work. Just musing.

Air Canada forbids using Bluetooth headphones at any phase during a flight on their Dash-8 series birds. So much for using my iPad on my flights.

I wouldn't bet on it, and it's in no way a replacement for pro-scenarios, but there might be an adapter included...

what do you mean with inconsistent ? if doesn't matter the screen size, than apple could make any dimensions right?

I will keep my current Ipad pro 12.9 until death do us part (or chrome on the new pixelbook works better with android).

Good. No one uses headphones on an ipad anyway. If you want to use headphones u should just buy the $160 AirPods.

edit: Just because you think you need wired headphones on an ipad doesn't mean you're right. if Apple is removing the headphone jack it's because you don't need a headphone jack.

No one? Really? I would argue more people use headphones with their iPads than a smartphone. People tend to consume more media like movies and videos on their ipad. So they are more likely to use headphones for those things.

There are lots of headphones with either Lightning or USB-C connector available, in a wide variety of price classes.

The only minor nuisance is that they are probably not included in the box. On the other hand you can then choose the headphones that fit best both your ears and your wallet.

if my math isn’t totally wrong... wouldn’t the larger iPad Pro have its screen increased from 12.9 to 13.2? This is considering the iPad has 0.9mm bezels all around.

215.00^2 + 180.66^2 = 353.5464mm (13.919 inches). Then take 35.35464 - 1.8 (Bezels on each sides combined) = (13.211 inches). I doubt the bezels would be much bigger than 9mm.

They have removed other ports from full-computer devices in the past and usually were correctly predicting where the industry would eventually move to. The only thing you could accuse them of is that they´re usually ahead of the curve, thus making the transition a bit bumpy for their customers.

So much information here. How do the new iPads compare size wise to the latest models.
Are the iPads getting smaller with the same screen or same screen smaller chassis
I’m confused

I have one pair of bluetooth headphones and about 10 pairs of wired headphones. I'm not being forced into purchasing one type of technology because a totally different type of technology is myopic enough to think that everyone already has that technology.
iPads go in bags. They need a bit of strength about them. Show me a group of people for whom the majority would rather have a fractionally thinner ipad at the expense of a headphone jack and i'll show you a group of people who either work at Apple, have more money than sense or are simply out of touch with what the purchasing public want.
I've already decided not to buy another Apple laptop or phone because of their nonsense. Now the tablet is gone too. For the record, i've been an exclusive-to-Apple customer for 20 years. They're idiots.
