I hope on Monday we find out once and for all when this thing will be released..headphone jack, no headphone jack, 10.5 inches, 11 inches, would love to buy this if we could just get the darn release date

Even funnier -

Before: the iPad is a toy. It can’t be used for work!
Apple removes the headphone jack - the iPad is crippled. It can’t be used for work anymore!

Where were you all when people were crapping on the iPad?

And all of the “iPad is just a big iPhone” whines. Now, all of a sudden people are going to be running FCP-X or Pro Tools on it!

Use the slim less than 1 ounce adapter that Apple will likely supply for the first few years (though possibly USB C on the iPad end), similar to what the company did when removing the headphone jack from the iPhone. Just keep the adapter in the bag which holds your iPad.

Yeah, I know there will be a huge whinefest by some about how the $10 Apple-supplied adapter will not be up to snuff for those using $1K headphones. In which has I'll have to LOL about expecting a superb listening room environment and experience on a noisy and vibration prone airplane.

The issue is having to keep multiple adapters around and juggle them. And half the time you’ll have the wrong one with you.

Mhmm, I’ve still not found Bluetooth headphones to be as good as wired headphones (my DSR9BTs are good but not a replacement) for referencing things I do on my iPad Pro. AirPods? I only use them for the gym and I’m looking for something better.

A dongle won’t do it as I have no idea what distortion is going on. I guess I’ll have to ramp up use of my Surface Pro for audio work if indeed it is removed.

Also... the camera bump can seriously disappear.

This hysteria of walking around all tangled up in dongles is way over-exaggerated. It didn’t happen with the MBP (because in reality, you really only need one dongle with the ports specific to your needs), and it’s not going to happen with the iPad.

Why? You can always use the lighting to 3.5 dongle. If Apple replaces the lighting port with USB-C I bet you they make another dongle just for that. No worries. There’ll be a way to connect your headphones.
Even better, as USB-C is a standard you'll be able to make use of any of the USB-C to 3.5 dongles already available for much less cost than the one Apple is likely to make, there are literally dozens of the them out there already. This is a $2 problem.

Fine. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a problem for lots of other people.

If that's a problem for a lot of other people then the good news is there's a solution at hand. Step up and vote with your wallet, purchasing a tablet with a headphone jack, and rewarding the manufacturer with your currency. Easy. OTOH, that would require shouldering a bit of responsibility many won't want to take on.

Seems Apple creates these problems where the user is inconvenienced to add cost to their purchase for usability that was included before. The only reason I can fathom is to penny pinch for profits and annoy their users.

I have an iPad Pro and purchased the Smart KB and Apple Pencil. Those were an add on as it was never fused to the main device similar to a case. I would not be happy to run out to purchase a dongle or BT headphones, thus adding to my initial cost.

The “old tech” doesn’t apply when the replacement does not replicate the quality. Like saying forget wired Ethernet, wireless is good enough for everybody! A la MacBook pros. Trash
Nonsense. You can plug headphones right into it with better quality too.

Over the course of the iPad lifecycle it has seen dips in sales. I suspect due to the new design similar to the X, this redesign will see a bump in sales and the next version will be flat or dip similar to the 5.8” Xs model. The addition of a 6.5” and Xr model allows Apple to demonstrate to the market that the company and its recent product releases are doing well, I expect this to be the case at its next earnings call.

Had Apple released a 6.5” X model late year, sales would be flat if not a dip this year. If you believe the display technology was not ready you are kidding yourself.

The product roadmap had a larger display version in the works before the release of the X. Apple does not mind canablizing or holding off a release to gage the market as it can balance out its profit earnings to investors in a progressive manner.

Apple can backup it’s claim by stating that XYZ feature was not ready at release, however this is what their do well.

Dude, give it a rest. We all know you have BT headphones. Cool. I also have BT headphones, but on long haul flights like 12 hours in the air, I don't have a single pair of BT headphones that can run non-stop or even close. I think everyone has heard your point (many times now), so why don't you allow other perspectives to have a voice on the subject?

Out of interest, have you looked at the Sony XM3s? They’re rating themselves at 30hrs with NC, 38 wired if I recall correctly

Lol, I guess in recording studios BT headphones and devices are being used for their superior quality.

I use both wired and wireless headphones, I like wired as I do not have to charge two devices and my phones battery charge does not take a significant hit compared to wireless.

Don’t like using wired that’s cool, others do. If you want to remove it offer a rebate.

If I did not use the lightening port on my iPhone, maybe Apple should remove that too (looking forward to that day).

What is it about people voicing their frustrations or identifying their problems that so upsets you? Do people need your permission to point out the negatives in a product? Is there some unwritten rule that says they can’t point out that, say, if rumors are true Apple has made people transition to two different hacks in the last couple years to get analog sound out of their devices, and instead they have to slink away to Samsung forums and switch ecosystems? Did someone elect a mayor in charge of what people are allowed to talk about, and I missed it?

Doesn’t resolve clock jitter and frame buffering issues you get. And I’ll need to find a good pair of DAC/AMP which work properly in the setup... assuming iOS wants to co-operate.

I too use both wired and wireless headphones. Depends on what I’m doing. At the gym, wireless, for casual listing, wireless for work... always wired.

Lol, if Apple released a shiny turd there will be people here either defending/praising or the opposite. The very few will be neutral and gage it for what it truly is (chocolate).

I was under the impression from your last post that you were trying to convince someone to go wireless as a solution if the headphone jack is to be removed. Maybe my misunderstanding.

Not upset at all. And I'm hardly regulating what people can talk about (though you seem to be taking on that role towards me). What a fanciful narrative you're attempting to create. Seems you're the one who's a bit steamed and unhappy.

No, definitely not, was just wondering they had tried or looked at the headset given that battery life was a concern.

Lightning headphones cannot be used with any other device. The selection of headphones with Lightning is considerably more limited. If someone wants to carry one pair of headphones to use on the iPhone, iPad and Mac or PC, or anything else, there are no adapters made for Lightning headphones to 3.5mm or even USB-C. Maybe Apple will remedy this with the introduction of the new iPad, but I sort of doubt it.

Also, there’s no way to use two Lightning headphones at the same time to share a movie on an iPad, or listen to audio books or music with another person. There literally is no such adapter.

The only way to solve these problems is to use Apples lightning adapter and plug in a standard pair of headphones. An adapter must be purchased to use Lightning connections while charging the iPad, a common situation on long haul air flights, or just an evening watching movies or playing video games, working with audio video apps, or other processor intensive activities.

And as far as I know, there’s no lightning adapter to allow two Lightning devices to share the port at the same time, like an external Microphone pre-amp, and midi interface, etc. leaving no place to plug the Lightning headphones either ...

AirPods are great, but they aren’t perfect for everything, especially on the iPad. For starters they are lower quality than uncompressed audio over a wire. Maybe not important for casual listening, but essential for professional audio work, or full fidelity movie watching, and higher quality headphones which can make the distinction.

AirPods have no low latency option. This means they can’t be used for gaming, or audio recording.

AirPods can’t be paired to the same source so you and your wife can watch the same movie on the iPad together, or listen to an audio book, or music simultaneously.

AirPods can be paired to other BT devices, but because of the low latency issue, will not be able to even watch movies in audio sync because Apple relies on their own hardware to maintain sync.

I'm a little hard of hearing... so for me personally I doubt I could ever notice the quality difference. But obviously for others it can be a bigger deal...
As for the wife and I not being able to listen to the same thing... well... i can't imagine that ever being a problem. She and I have competent different tastes (she likes rubbish)! :D

Except of course, apple will have some embedded chip to ensure that your "apple experience" isn't compromised, and will render all non-Apple certified accessories (ie, those subject to a tax from Apple on the manufacturers) nonfunctional.
