The key word in your post is “when”. If a wireless option equal or better exists with the same or no drawbacks to usage then I see no problem. The issue is forcing everyone to new tech that does not meet these requirements in the hopes that someday advancements will be made is ridiculous. When the solution is on par or better then remove and don’t forget to add a transitional phase.

Using the built-in speaker/s also use power, even the display. By this logic let’s get rid of the speakers and display. Better yet let’s just replace the iPad with paper, problem solved.

Here is an experiment you can do to test out how much of a hit and how fast you battery will degrade due to more recharging. Use wired headphones on device till battery dies. Use lightening headphones till battery dies, rinse and repeat for BT v2-5 headphones, built-in speaker and while for added value connect a BT keyboard to it. Record your results. I will even give BT an advantage use it first in this test as the battery will degrade due to recharge cycles, initially the level of battery wear is minimal, however keep recharging it you will notice a difference.

Remember this is only one experiment, next record the battery life of those BT v2-5 headphones compared to those wired ones.

In this situation Apple wants you to replace those AirPods and that iPhone or the battery in it or the AirPod case, as that is the nature of batteries to degrade over time. It means a constant revenue stream, nothing else explains these actions.

You can tell me an entire story, use a lot of words, try to twist my words in making a statement that the internal speakers and the screen have to be removed, etc.
I didn’ t say this , en that is not the situation we are talking about.
my reaction was towards your remark that there are build in speakers that also use power , when we are in a discussion about a situation about the headphone jack and using headphones in which those speakers will never be used and don’ t have to be powered.

Personally I would like to see them make a usb out so I can connect my digital headphones, but keeping the headphone jack would have been great. Maybe a usb-c would really be great so I can buy a dongle to do same.

Except Apple got rid of the headphone on the iphone and now rumors are saying same for the ipad. That is the reality of the situation.

But that doesn't mean, profits first, customers second. Apple is very bold for pushing a specific agenda. And this move is not to push airpods, because there is no guarantee a customers would even go back to apple get a replacement. And this move is not to increase the 5 centers per unit margin either.

I don't know what your solution is, but the handwriting appears to be on the wall.

I am not sure if the “remove headphone jack” group here is suffering from some head buried in ground/sand ailment or something else.

As explained by Apple the jack was removed to make room for the Taptic Engine, followed by some nonsense marketing talk of it being historic. I cannot believe people bought into the marketing.

The Taptic Engine over generations can be made smaller or adjust placement to reaccommodate the jack. Want to bet that will not happen in the iPhone. It’s not like their increased the size and capacity of the battery due to its removal.

Fact is the battery size and capacity have decreased, the silicone size has decreased and yet the Taptic Engine seems to be relative the same size since introduction. Or what could possibly be reincorporated into the device if only for a small component shrink or replacement. Even the AppleWatch has a tiny Taptic Engine. Can it be done, sure the answer is clear. However if your battery degraded slowly using wired headphones and you do not have to buy BT headphones or buy a new iPhone or replace the battery faster than needed over the course of its lifespan then there is nothing for Apple to gain in the accessory and replacement sector.

One solution is to make it law to incorporate a headphone jack or a free dongle as there is law being drafted to allow the FM radio to be used on iPhone. Similar to EU law relating to phone chargers/adapters, RTR, etc. Some companies bring these actions on to themselves.

There are many ports on my previous MBP that I either used infrequently or not at all, I have no problem that it takes up space on my device. Others do have a use for it and it is available, why impose my lack of need onto others.

If I wanted others to live as I do, there would be no cars on the road. Sounds outrageous to impose my will onto others without considering theirs. Apple over the years has transformed into being a selfish wall street suit. I hate saying this, but it seems accurate.

You kind of answered your own question here. The new iPad Pros are not aluminium anymore, it's stainless steel, like the iPhone XS/XS Max.
how do you know?based on rumours? come on...where do you see stainless steel? its still aluminium ...and lets not forget , iphoneX is stainless steel and GLASS...glass resist more to bend than 6000 series AL at the same thickness

The power draw is minimal and those components are already active in a no wired or wired situation, I am not sure you understand this. There is no option to turn on/off this component/s compared to BT/WiFi/LTE, etc.

Camera bump means nothing but a “not going to buy this!” for the iPad Pro! Bad taste/ really bad design! I wouldnt put something that makes a bump underneath a sheet of paper before starting to draw on in neither!
don't care about your issue, for me a go go since the last ipad pros...scan documents since iOS11 is a bless...and i do need a good camera. But i can agree if Apple will NOT go for that ridiculous thickness of 5.8mm

Air Canada forbids using Bluetooth headphones at any phase during a flight on their Dash-8 series birds. So much for using my iPad on my flights.
You sound reasonably intelligent. Lightning adaptors to 3.5 jack exist. Pass it on.if they offer only a usb c port they will provide an adapter for that.

No I don’ t understand this en it doesn’ t seem true either. So when the speakers are silent and don’ t have to be amplified or driven, that takes the same powerdraw as when speakers are playing at highest volume? Sorry, calling bs on that one.

Well...I certainly can't speak for everybody knowing, but do know from experience that product development and design always involves a set of engineering trades. The question to ask is, assuming the rumor is in fact true, what was gained that the elimination of the headphone jack helped foster?

For some, especially for those who are not able to put a headphone adapter in the same bag their iPad travels in, the answer might be nothing worthwhile was gained.

For others, that trade and resulting benefit might be well worth it and more important than losing the headphone jack.

That's the way it goes...
The question is what exactly would be gained? The only available answer is extra profit for Apple.

Oh the irony.

Vis-a-vie for those headphone jack haters ;):p:D

Lol, it’s similar to lowering the brightness on the display or putting it in sleep mode. Power is still going to it, unless you turn the device off completely. Many components use power in a standby state even when not in use, the duty of a power management silicone. Imagine your phone is completely turned off or dead, when you plug in a lightening cord or wireless charge it turns the display on to indicate the battery is charging with an aucoustic tone. This happens as the power management is provides instructions to the various components to speak and work together. One simply does not turnoff the lightening port, Qi, cameras, speakers off individually as the user controllled LTE/WiFi/BT.

What if I need to charge my device at the same time? Oh the e/waste for such a green company such as Apple. Now is that green for the environment or money, oh the contradiction of this companies actions and words, take it easy on the Kool-Aid and pickup a joint. It becomes legal Oct 17th.

I have found a lot of articles around the internet that states these 2 things:

1. When increasing volume on your iPhone through headphones or internal speakers, it takes a bigger powerdraw.
2. When using Bluetooth headsets, the internal dac of the iPhone is not used and running idle, drawing less power from the iPhone (but of course drawing power from the BT headset, which has to be charged separately of course).

Just google it.

Your headphones may have a digital connection but they are analogue, all headphones are analogue, your ears are analogue.

No, SW air doesn't offer in flight entertainment or power supply in all its flights.

Not the wrong thread son; we are discussing the configuration of a yet to be released product and its hypothetical pros and cons.

Don't shut out other members - if you don't like it, move on.

You're not being "shut out," just asked to stay on topic when you respond. The topic was whether your world was going to fall apart because Apple dropped the 3.5mm and traveling on airlines was allegedly now so difficult because you had to use an adapter on the airplane. It turns out that is fake news and that all the major airlines, including Southwest, have switched to wi-fi entertainment so folks don't have to plug into arm rests or seat backs anymore. Here's the link so you don't have to bother the SW flight attendant to help you find where the 3.5mm plug is on the arm rest.

Regardless of any discussions, removal of the headphone jack will be a no sale for me. IMHO. Apple is just trying to sell additional headphones. I will either purchase an 'older' iPad or just live with my iPad Air2.

Oh... That's easy. A larger edge-to-edge display, likely in a thinner case.

I'll buy one!

Huh, an audio jack was restricting the iPad from having a pseudo edge-to-edge display. What about the lightening port, SIM tray, etc.

Apple is the new snake oil salesman in town, lol.

Yes, but they are not powered when using bt headphones, and there is no sound from the speakers of the iPhone itself. Right?
Sound is coming from the DACs and amplifier that is build inside the blue tooth headphone, right?

With 3.5mm headphones, the headphones are passive and need to be converted to an analogue signal by the iPhone and need to be amplified by the amplifier in the iPhone.

The only way you would be right is when playing audio through headphones and from the phones speakers at the same time. I don’ t think these situations exist, or are necessary.

Are you really trying to say that the power draw from the internal DAC and amp to drive a pair of wired EarPods through a headphone jack, is in any way comparable to the power the Bluetooth radio uses to transmit the unconverted signal to AirPods?

Yet again, Forget the 3.5 jack on mobile devices - they’re gone for good.
Cut the wires, embrace the future.
It’s sillily/stupid to go about it over and over again.
Reminds me of the conversations about axing floppy disk and CD drives of old...

Then why did Apple not remove the headphone jack on the mobile MacBook Pro, when they redesigned it with one USB-C port?

I could see the reasoning for a phone, it's small and space is at a premium. For a tablet, it hardly seems necessary. I use tiny cheapo earbuds for my Nintendo Switch, Macbook Pro and iPad when I fly. Space is at a premium and I'd rather not pack a large pair of bulky Bluetooth headphones.

I guess we'll see what happens. To me, an iPad is just a consumption device. I use it to watch movies on a plane and I would have liked the larger screen and the pencil support that my iPad lacks. All this really does (if true) is push me towards keeping my current device, go for the cheaper one or just use my MacBook Pro for watching movies when I'm on a plane.

I can attest that not all airlines offer this, especially regional and inter Europe.

You don't need to attest to it, no one said every single airline offers it, just every major airline in the US and most around the world. Smaller regional carriers are a relatively moot point as they aren't offering this type of in flight entertainment anyways, due to costs and the length of the the trips.

on that thinking...then Apple was nuts not to put optical drive and floppy disk and support for flash
