Or does the Apple iPhone product team hang out with the ‘smoking’ MacOS marketing team a little too much?

Apple's upcoming 6.5-inch iPhone could be called the "iPhone Xs Max" according to information shared by both BGR and 9to5Mac citing sources with knowledge of Apple's marketing plans.

Naming for Apple's 2018 iPhone lineup has been unclear and Apple is said to have struggled to decide on a new naming scheme to follow the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus.

Last week, leaked information suggested Apple has settled on "iPhone Xs" as the name for the 5.8 and 6.5-inch OLED devices that are in the works. At the time, it was believed both could use the same "iPhone Xs" name like the iPad Pro, but now it looks like the larger model could continue to feature a unique name.

Apple is not planning to use the same "Plus" labeling that it has used since the iPhone 6 Plus was introduced, and "Max" could potentially be the replacement. "iPhone Xs Plus" is a mouthful and difficult to say, but "iPhone Xs Max" is easier to pronounce.

The 6.5-inch iPhone Xs Max will be sold alongside the 5.8-inch iPhone Xs and the 6.1-inch iPhone, which we don't yet know the name of.

In other related news, German site Macerkopf has shared details on potential European pricing for the 2018 lineup. Citing a pair of unnamed sources, the site says that the 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could cost 799 euros, the 5.8-inch iPhone Xs could cost 909 euros, and the iPhone Xs Max could cost 1149 euros.

These are the same prices Apple currently charges for the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, and would translate to pricing of $699, $799, and $999 in the United States.

That's mostly in line with rumors we've heard about U.S. pricing, which have pegged the cost at $600 to $700 for the 6.1-inch iPhone, $800 to $900 for the iPhone Xs, and $900 to $1,000 for the iPhone Xs Max.

With Apple's event set to take place in one week on Wednesday, September 12, we don't have long to wait to find out Apple's exact naming and pricing plans for the three devices.

The new iPhones will be unveiled at an event set to take place at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus. Apple plans to live stream the event, and MacRumors will also feature live coverage both on MacRumors.com and on the MacRumorsLive Twitter account.

I remember back in the day when Apple fanboys mocked Samsung for their ludicrous phone naming schemes...... "iPhone XS Max" sounds like it's been taken from a page out of the early 2000s Samsung naming playbook to me :p:D

Nope, this is not true so close to revealing the new iPhones, the packaging is already printed for millions of iPhones, someone could easily leak that name.
True, but we don't have the smoking gun...which is why I said it's difficult to leak unless there is physical evidence of course. Hardware features are easier because you have suppliers involved and a lot of physical evidence. Printing is probably much easier to control.

Apple is walking into the territory of Capcom with Street Fighter names of Super Street Fighter Alpha Hyper...

If true, I wonder what it has to warrant a name call Max. For sure it won’t have max ram, bigger screen yes, battery? 512gb of storage?

If it has the same specs as the rest of the new iPhone line up, but with just a bigger screen, isn't Max consider false advertisement?

Absolute nonsense. XS Max is a terrible name and no easier to say than XS Plus. I don’t believe this rumor one bit.

Eww. Just...I would expect this from Google but thought Apple would be better than this. But, I've been wrong before.

Bro, I heard you want the XS Max for XMas, so we put the XS Max on the XS Max while you party it up at Club XS Vegas, xoxo

There is nothing PRO about a phone. They screwed up when they deviated and didn't call the 9, Xs and Xs+. Simple. Just follow the naming profiles. All this angst for really terrible names

And apparently the 6.1” model will be called Xr. Makes no sense unless Apple is punking us all.

My guess was that Apple would just call both models “iPhone XS”, in the same way that they don’t give a different name to the larger iPad Pro or MacBook Pro. But if they are going to give the bigger one a separate name, I suppose “Max” is fine.

Additionally, the name “iPhone Xr” has been circulating as the supposed title of the 6.1-inch budget iPhone model, which will sit below the iPhone Xs but above the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus in Apple’s lineup. Like the “Max” name, this one is hard to swallow given that “Xr” hasn’t been used in an Apple product before, and apart from coming earlier in the alphabet than “Xs,” doesn’t have an obvious meaning. Like the Xs Max, the Xr name should be taken with at least a grain of salt for the time being.

This seems nutty to me, because it doesn’t sound like a product that should cost $200 less than the “XS”. This one also isn’t sourced — both 9to5Mac and BGR claim multiple sources gave them the “XS Max” name.1 This “XR” name is just floating about. To me the very obvious choice would be to call the 6.1-inch LCD model the “iPhone 9”, but the one tidbit I have heard is that the name of this model is “surprising”. “iPhone 9” would not be surprising at all; “iPhone XR” would be.
