Well, the 11 pro is packaged up and ready to send back. Good gracious it’s an amazing device, but at the end of the day, it’s just a phone. I mean it’s a really AMAZING phone, but the SE will do most of the same things. With everything zoomed on the SE, the typing is so much easier. I think I’ll be able to hold out til fall releases as originally planned and make a decision then.

Ultimately, the ease of using the small phone just wins for me - that and the price. It’s not that I can’t afford to buy the pro - it’s just that $1100 is a lot of money (our tax is 10%) for a phone with 64 gb storage, even if it is a really awesome one.

I’m hoping maybe if I get more proficient with the SE, I’ll be able to go for the 5.4 in the fall after all. We shall see. That is if I don’t wind up taking the pro back out of the box before I can get it to Fed Ex. ;-p

At least you gave it a go! I hear you on the price, here its 1400 and 13% for 64gb.. I'll probably keep my XS Max for a few years.. in the end its like you said, just a phone. I have computers for things I cant or don't want to do with my phone.

It really makes a big difference in the keyboard size on this phone. I had no idea it was an option. I’ve only had iPhones for 12+ years now. 😝
That’s the cool thing about sharing experiences: sometimes we learn things and our experiences get better. :)

Thanks for the zoomed view tip. I tried it out on my 7. Too bad you can’t just make the keyboard bigger. I don’t like the cramped look of the home screen with the bigger icons.

Yeah I do agree with that, although I put all my folders of stuff on the second page so I can have a clean home screen (Obviously the most common stuff is on the dock).

Are you happy with the concessions you have made to run the smaller phone?

I‘m mostly fine with it. Honestly the biggest thing for me is the gestures. I‘m OCD and it bothers me a little that my iPad and phone are different in that way. I mean sure if I’d keep that pro I would see some big improvements, but nothing that’s $700 worth in my opinion.

I've stuck with my 8 Plus... the new SE was tempting but the camera is not as good and I take more than a few photos with it. The X, 11 and probably 12 are just not all that interesting to me.

For the photos I take, I haven’t noticed a difference from my 11. I mostly take grandkid pics in portrait mode. Certainly there’s a drawback to not being able to take other objects in portrait mode, but it’s not a deal breaker. The size change was more important to me.

I was actually using my daughter’s 8+ yesterday, and that phone felt HUGE, even compared to my 11. It was just such a wide, big phone overall. I mean I loved it - used that form factor from the 6+ till I got my 11. It just feels so big to me now.

ssledoux : I wanted to ask sooner that it is just me or do you put lot of effort to choosing right "size / iphone", but if you have OCD, do you think that can cause that ?
I envy people which buy iphone and they don't thinking about upgrade for few years...
Because I put so much time into "choosing right model" too... Or it is a just 1st world problem ? 😀

It seems that yes, it is a first-world problem, but it's more than that. It's a psychological phenomenon in the spirit of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Once certain needs are met (or we resign ourselves that they will never be met), we move on to more/other needs. Think of it this way: once having a phone/car/clothes/house/etc is not a difficult need to meet, then having the best/perfect one becomes the need.

So yes, some of us may spend way too much time picking out our techie stuff, but we also have way more fun with our techie stuff than many others do. Usually. Sometimes it's not fun. Those are the times I do envy those people who just buy their phones every few years and give it no more thought. But I also know the human condition and figure I might find some decisions easier than they do. If we're lucky, we have extra time in our lives to "spend way too much time" on something, and I think we're even luckier if we find something that makes us happy (and doesn't hurt others.) In the meantime, maybe try noticing what others spend "too much time on" and see if you can relate to them: dude, I gotcha, it's like getting the perfect phone. :)

Well, I don’t think I have true OCD, but I am obsessive about certain things (stuff like all the grandsons having one color ipad and granddaughters having another). I’m just weird like that.

I really haven’t thought a lot about phone size like this before. I have used plus phones for years, then I went to the XR then 11 without much thought (I did try the XS Max before I got the XR). This is the first time I have really struggled with what to do, only because I love the size of the SE, and was ready to downsize, but was concerned I might have gone a bit too small, so I tried the 11 pro because the size seemed just right.

Honestly, I do think the 11 pro size is probably pretty right for me, but I just couldn’t wrap my brain around spending $1100 for a phone.

Anyway, that was a long, drawn out way to say I’m pretty sure it’s first world problems. ;-p

I had a similar but different experience. Each fall when Apple came out with a new phone, it was such fun that I called it Applemas. When iPads and watches started coming out at the same time, the techie Christmas just got better. Then OLED happened, and every year since then I've bought and returned so many phones, struggling to find the right one. And it seems to get a little better each year: I even made it six months this year with the 11PM, but the LCD just never hurts the way OLED does. I use my boyfriend's 11P sometimes now and it hurts right away. I feel the immediate squint. And then I think remember when getting an iPhone was easy. I just got the one size, and then I went bigger when they got bigger. Easy peasy. Now it's a little different. Funny how more options don't always make stuff better. The paradox of choice. :]

It's good that we're enjoying the SE now. Though I get your trying the 11P. I'm thinking about trying the 11 again. Maybe even just switch between the two. Ugh. :$

Well I had kinda resigned myself to the fact that if OLED was causing me issues, I’d go back to the 11. There are just features missing from the SE that I wouldn’t want to be without long-term (mainly the gestures, and the screen is just a little smaller than I know I’d want to have for years). I honestly don’t think I used the 11 pro enough to know if it was bothering me - it seemed to make my head hurt and bother my eyes, but I was looking at a LOT of screens.

The thing is, a full screen SE (basically the 5.4) would be a great device, but the fact that it’ll have OLED does make me wonder if I’ll actually be able to use it.

And yeah, I feel the same about Apple goodies - it’s always fun when new stuff comes out. I’m a little obsessed.

ssledoux : 😀 Sympatic answer which is close to me.

Anyway, after a year with my ip11 i got used to my 6,1" and I think that 5,4" will be a so small. But what If I upgrade to OLED and than find out that "bothers me" ? Latest OLED which I had for about year was Lumia 950 and I had no issues at all, but it was few times ago and things could change (e.g. my eyes)...

I would love to have an SE2 with full screen, light weight, headphone jack, finger print reader on the side, and pen support.

I wonder why Samsung’s oled doesn’t give headaches, but Apple’s does for some people. Very strange.
Excellent question: I have the original iPhone SE and no eye problems or headaches at all. Have had the Samsung Galaxy S10e for nine months and no problems whatsoever. Last month bought the new iPhone SE (which only has a LCD screen I believe) and eye strain and headaches right away. As a result, I returned it and continue happily with my Samsung.
I have posted this before but nobody seems to have had a problem with the new SE.

It probably hurt your eyes because it’s small and you may need glasses. The OLED screen is what seems to bother “some” people.

The new SE is not smaller than the old SE. I find the text on the old SE sharper than on the new one. I do not wear reading glasses at all.

Honestly, I have had some headaches when I’m reading at night on the new SE, but I have pretty much chalked it up to it being smaller because I have never had an issue with any of the LCD screens before. It was a noticeable difference for me with OLED when I had my XS Max, although I really didn’t keep it long so I don’t know if I would have adjusted. Leaving Apple is just not an option for me.

I did make some of the setting changes mentioned in this thread above while I was trying the pro, and if I go OLED in the fall, I will definitely apply those settings.

Keep the SE2 for now and rebuy the 11 Pro at a lower price in the fall if the 12 variants don’t appeal?

That’s what I have decided to do.

Will you buy direct from apple at a hopefully reduced price? I really want to take advantage of apples decent aftersales service if its needed... I fear a carrier purchase in the UK would be a bad move for me. At least with apple you know what you can expect.
