Why buy an Apple TV, when an Xbox 360 for $50 more does 1080P, has netflix, youtube, facebook, twitter, Disney XD, music playback plus a lot more always coming.
Plus plays games. And dvd's. And dvds from a usb stick.

Why buy an XBox 360 when for the same price you can get a PS3 which plays blurays, doesn't charge for online play, is more reliable, and has the Uncharted series? Sorry, couldn't resist.

as stated in the other thread:

1080p is useful for almost no one, but doesn't hurt most of us, if:

1. no fans are added because of the faster processor
2. no price increase is observed (119€ for EU)

if 1 and 2 are met, it's a nice upgrade for those using PLEX on the ATV2 who want 1080p without frames dropping. however, i don't see anyone with an ATV2 upgrading.

Why by either, when you can something passively cooled (makes no noise) requires almost no space (10cm3) and uses no energy (6W max)?

Do you guys think that any of the new products will have the new wireless AC norm implemented?

Just that would make me upgrade my Apple TV, since i'm happy with the 720p

I want an Apple TV as a streamer that also could access files on external HDD via normal USB or even FW/TB interface, no advanced NAS, Airplay via iPhone/iPad, Mac required during playback, or even depends on internet connection for live streaming iTunes movies.

I just want my TV, Apple TV connected to simple and cheap USB external HDD, and audio receiver as the only things that turned on during the show.

Isn't that much simpler than iTunes movie rent live streaming? Not everyone have 20Mbps Internet connection, you know.

But I dont want Roku, Boxee, or WDTV. I want it from a simple $99 box from Apple. Is that too much to ask really? :(

With the graphic power of what an ipod touch maybe?

Well, for one thing an XBox 360 uses something like 185 watts under load, and 2.5 watts on standby. The Apple TV uses 2 watts under load and 3/4 watts on standby. Besides that you get Airplay mirroring, access to the iTunes store, and streaming from iTunes libraries over the network. If these things are important to you then Apple TV is your best bet. Otherwise, yes, you have lots of other options, including XBox.

They're not $50 more, particularly when you consider paying for Xbox live on top of it all to access many of those features.

A new xbox for $149?! Where..?

And then you have to pay for an xbox live subscription in order to access your netflix subscription. Buy an apple tv, pay for what you use. Airplay audio and video, from a silent, tiny black box, as opposed to the hovercraft engine in the xbox! I have an apple tv in every room in the house, apart from anything else it gives me whole home audio cover for parties.

Will the new apple TV have anything else other than 1080p? I love my current Apple TV 2, but only stream content to it in SD because our broadband is too slow to support 720p without waiting 4 hours for it to buffer.... So 1080p isn't a killer deal for me, but is that it's only differentiator over ATV2 or what other killer features will it have??

There's a chance that it will support third-party apps (e.g. games, Air Video, etc.) This would be a killer feature, but I don't know if Apple is ready to go there yet. If the only update is 1080p support, I'll be kinda disappointed.

That would be nice, but with AirPlay mirroring I'm not sure Apple will ever go down the road of apps directly on the ATV. It would kind of do away with the point of AirPlay mirroring from iDevices.

One thing they must improve with mirroring though is the lag, and the video stuttering. Playing games over AirPlay mirroring from the iPad to ATV is near impossible for me :(

Yet video / movies content works grand streamed to it?

PLEX

http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/forum/76-apple-tv-2nd-gen/

works great for me, except with frame drops during really high high-bitrate 720p playback.

If it drops at 720, then theres no chance in hell it'll do 1080. And considering that 720 is half way to Full HD and only a step above DVD, why do you guys bother with Apple TV if it only gives you marginal improvement over DVD?

Why dont you guys just get Boxee Box and not have to worry about codecs or resolutions?

it drops at "high bitrate" 720p, not normal 720p. 1080p is pretty much a no go, unless the bitrate is low enough to not be better than 720p.

for one, a Boxee Box is big, clunky and looks like crap (might as well buy an XBox at that point). It's heavy, makes noise, and takes a lot of space. It's also much more expensive (170€ or so).

i want a simple, elegant design that's not intrusive to play whatever TV I can't get over here.

to be honest, a MacMini is prefect for the this, but at 599€ it's not easily justifiable.

Have you actually seen a Boxee Box up close? Its none of what you what you described it as;

Its pretty small, you can tell from that picture alone, its 4.5 inches wide, tall and deep since its a cube.

How small do you need it to be? Unless you live in a shack where you share space with a mouse, I don't see why this is even an issue. It sits next to your TV. I personally have a Western Digital TV, and compared to all the stereo decks and DVD players (even the small ones), the thing is tiny.

But the real deal breaker is the file format support. Apple TV doesn't even compare. DivX, Xvid, MKV, x264, etc etc etc.

Wow... I'm not usually a complainer but... 1080P? Not that it needs much more but... that's it? I don't know, I guess it's better than no update. I can definitely live with 720P if thats all it offers over the current gen.

Edit: This rating system is whack. God forbid I have an opinion to express that doesn't involve me getting on my knees for Apple.
Truth sometimes hurts, that's why. I agree with you, especially as 1080p content often only becomes notable at 50" or so. For 42" displays, 720p is very good. Assuming normal viewing distances. 720p is even OK on my 50" screen.

I'm still considering one. But that's because I don't own an Apple TV.

I don't understand why Apple doesn't let it run apps. It already has network connectivity and runs iOS. It can even show app output via AirPlay Mirroring, so it's not a display problem. What's getting in the way? It would become a powerful media center if this was enabled, regardless if Apple has any TV industry deals or not. So many apps exist to play XviD and mkv-wrapped movies too.

$39 Bluetooth remote for ATV. With Wii like capabilities? Or maybe a small trackpad.

OMG, maybe because no one cares about Uncharted as he can fight Locusts? Physical medias are dead, whether they are called CDs, DVDs or Blureys, got it?

I've been saying it since the beginning, B82 will be an Apple designed pressure sensitive stylus for the iPad 3 that will work off the iPad 3's Bluetooth 4.0. Mark my words!

That's in the same price point as the Wacom stylus that does nothing magical.

It would be interesting if they did that though. Lots of artists wants a pressure sensitive stylus so they can use it as a sketchpad. Wacom owns the patents on "batteryless pressure stylus" (haven't read the patents in a while) so I wouldn't be surprised if they maybe rigged a pressure stylus somehow without using Wacom's technology.
