This was the most interesting part of the article for me:

Although Apple is believed to have had some ambitions of launching Lion this week, at least one person familiar with the matter said earlier in the week that last minute concerns with one of the system's new features (app Resumes) would likely cause a minor delay.

The GM has a few pretty bad bugs, but I haven't experienced anything wrong with Resume. Maybe they are considering adding a App blacklist for the feature?

So what is the purpose of the 13" MBP now?

I'm kind of wondering this too. I bought the lower spec 13" mbp in late April and am wondering whether I should sell it while it's in mint condition and buy a new 13" mba.

If there really is the backlit keyboard and 4gb ram, what benefits would the mbp

If none of the other 13" notebooks get a 1440 x 900 display, game over man; game over.

If there really is the backlit keyboard and 4gb ram, what benefits would the mbp be giving me? I know I've got the extra hard disk space at the moment but I'd happily sacrifice that for the ssd. Plus, I know it's only £20.99 but I'd get lion pre

If the backlight keyboard makes a return, this will compete quite nicely with the Samsung Series 9 notebooks.

Can't wait until it is released. :)

Thoughts? Thanks.

Ive been waiting for 5 months!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please just do it, release the darn MBA

Anyone who waits for the "next revision" 3 months into a product cycle needs a serious education on marketing. Even at one per year, it was just released Nov 1, jeez. So if it comes out tomorrow and you sleep in and miss it, are you going to wait the year for the next one? Makes no sense.

If new MBA's were coming this month wouldn't the Apple Store be selling the old MBA's at a discount or try to, "Blow them out"? Or is that not how Apple works? Will they sell the, "Current" model at the same price until the day the new one comes on line?

The benefits would be, more ports, Superdrive, more HD space, and better price/performance.

But I agree, the MBP is looking weak now in comparison. They need to at least match the res of the 13" MBA in the next rev.

4 GB should absolutely be standard these days. Around here, most $700+ laptops feature more than 4 GB and a dedicated GPU. I could buy it not having a didicated GPU, I'd never buy the MBA for power, it's all form factor.

People said Core 2 Duo was outdated technology when the MB Air 11" came out, yet people still bought them in the millions. Everyone on here bitches, yet everyone buys them anyhow. I didn't like that I had to CTO to get 4GB on release day, nor did I like that it had a C2D processor, but I bought it because it's what they had at the time in the form factor I wanted.... people don't seem to understand that Apple is a business and they do their research. If you need a powerhouse, a MacBook Air isn't for you. If you're doing rendering on an 11" screen, you're obviously not working for a very successful GD House. lol.

I bought the base 11" MBA when it came out. Seeing this and it having Sandy Bridge makes me want to upgrade already. :)

hmmm, last time I touched a DVD.... hmmm.... 3 years ago when my grandma had a DVD player and I burned her a home movie (now she has a WDTV Live) I believe I burned it to a DVD. I can't believe they still put the drives on laptops... such a waste. Nobody uses them in business. It's all about flash.

If the 4gb standrad ram is hopefully true , the next question is whether there will be an option to upgrade to 6/8gb. Running a VM eats up memory, and cpu wise those new i7;s will manage nicely :D

Oh, on the UK refurb sites, there are many many many Airs in stock. They must either have a **** load of returns or they're moving unsold stock around prior to new ones arriving.

The only issue will be the crap Intel video board. I am not going to change my AIR with the new one, just because the video board. Even with "more" power with Sand Bridge.

By the way, I am running Lion on my AIR with 2GB of memory and works pretty good.

Regards,

really didn't see the minimum 128gb coming. Apple is managing to surprise me with every Sandy Bridge refresh, I didn't expect standard quad core neither on 15"+ MBPs nor every iMac of the last refresh. Way to go!

I am a manager in a 100+ corporation...My guess is that you are not. But hey, keep on babbling.

I agree with your points if the hardware was indeed only ready 2 weeks before the software. My guess based on rumors is that it was ready months before, in which case I disagree that it makes sense to wait.

Apple tends to produce special builds of the OS for new models. For example, the 2011 MBPs came with a build that was later than stock 10.6.6, but earlier than stock 10.6.7. The changes for the MBP was merged into 10.6.7. You could boot this special 10.6.6 build on all machines up to the 2011 MBP, but a stock 10.6.6 wouldn't boot on the 2011 MBP.

Now, if Apple was targeting a July refresh it makes sense to simply work on Lion also aimed at July, rather than a special 10.6.8 build. The drawback being that if Lion slips, so do the machines. I highly doubt Apple had these things "ready for months" in the sense that they were ready to ship. Prototypes of the next model are usually floating around the moment the current model starts shipping. Plus, Oct 2010 -> July 2011 is about the length of Apple's usual MBA cycle that we've seen to date. You don't want your cycles too short or the development cost doesn't get spread across nearly as many units as you want to make it as profitable as possible.

Yeah, it'll run fine on the base 11" air right now. Those who bitch obviously don't have one, or they have unrealistic expectations of the product. I wouldn't buy a Mini Cooper if I had a family of 6, so why would someone buy a C2D with 2 GB of Ram if they're wanting to perform video rendering and intensive tasks suited for a more capable processor? It's so annoying when people buy hot dogs and bitch that it's not lobster.

EDIT: Kudos to the OP for predicting that the NEW model will be superior to the OLD model. You must have gone to school for many years to have come up with a prediction that insightful.

Since 64 and 2 is actually enough for many people, I’d rather see them keep that—at a new low price point. Or at least, 64 and 4. (2 RAM is adequate—but won’t be forever. Whereas people without big media libraries could make do with limited HD space for years. I know many who do!)

Mbp

If this is true and the price is the same, I am not surprised to see the end of Macbook Pro line. The benefit of ssd is greater than the clock speed of cpu for average users.

I disagree. Let's put all of this in perspective. Apple caters to middle to upper class Americans. That's their market. They sell premium products. The way they have their laptops set up, you are getting a machine that serves a specific purpose, although they can all do a good number of things. If you read around on the forum, you'll see people who have more than 1 Apple product.

They'll have an Imac and an iPad, an iMac and a MacBook Pro/Air, or a MacBook pro and an Air/ipad; there are many combinations. Apple releases each product with a particular trait that makes it attractive.

The Air is small, the Pro is the full package, the iMac has an amazing screen. That's just concerning the build. With that said, people also always talk about the experience with getting Apple products.

It just works. That's what everyone says. It's easy, it's simple, it's fast, it is different. There's no denying this. Ask anyone here, that's what they'll say.

Waiting a few extra weeks to push their new OS with the most publicized and their new "staple" Laptop? That makes perfect sense. They're pushing the new MBA; hard. Why release it early when they can release it the same day and make a bigger story about it.

They can't really come out and say "hey look, refreshed airs! SNB processor, more ram, AND more hdd space!" They don't put emphasis on specs. That's not how they operate. They put emphasis on experience.

"Hey look, NEW operating system with all of these great features AND it's coming with a brand new, completely redesigned macbook air; a match made in heaven. We took the best of the ipad and macbook and combined them, AND we took the best of the iPad and computing (in terms of experienced) and combined them. "

That's generally how they are marketing Lion, if you watched the Keynote anyway.

THIS makes perfect sense.
