I'm at a loss as to how Apple can maintain price points with all of the more expensive components on board (Sandy Bridge, higher capacity SSD, Thunderbolt). They must've been making serious margin on the last gen MBA.

maintain their price point ???? they charge u 200$ for a 8GB RAM upgrade. U can get 8 GB of RAM if u buy it somewhere else for 69$. apple is anything but cheap as it is

I don't believe Apple markets the MBAs as a primary computer. At least I could never see using it as one.

I believe you're absolutely wrong. It's designed to be 100% a primary computer. It's able to do what 98% of the market demands... surf the web, word process, and watch movies.

I think some of the users on this site need to realize that playing WOW all day, rendering video, and photoshopping isn't what the AVERAGE mac user does. The average user sync their iPhone, watches a movie now and then, and sits on Facebook all day, something the macs made in 2006 are just as capable of doing for 98% of users.

Do you live in a world without humor, or just without sarcasm?

Wow, if you still don't get why Apple hasn't included blu-ray you really are in a shell.

http://www.myce.com/news/Apple-shies-away-from-Blu-ray-15133/

That article is fairly to the point but just in case you are too lazy to read it (since you obviously haven't done a simple google search to find out why) I will sum it up for you.

It has to do with licensing. Apple didn't feel like the licensing was fair at least too expensive for their liking which they would have had to pass onto the consumer. When blu ray reaches a certain market share it is possible Apple could adopt and it would feasible to pass onto the consumer. However, I wouldn't hold my breath.

Lol calm down dude... it was a joke post... How stupid do you really think I am to spell the word stupid "Stoopid" and complain about a blu ray drive being in a macbook air...

Man I really hope this one is actually true (As long as they stay at the same price points).

128GB SSD + 4GB RAM + Thunderbolt + 1.7Ghz i5 for $999 sounds good to me.

I think I could make do with 64 GB, but seeing as the actual formated drive size is smaller than that along with the Lion install at around 6GB you are talking around 54GB of free space starting out.

I intend to use mine just for coding and light graphics work, so it would be fine for me, but I think 64 GB is a bit small for people buying an 11" MBA as their first mac.

Great, if everything they say comes true, it will render my 3 month old 13" mbp obsolete. I couldnt care less about the DVD drive and the fw 800 port and the screen is not only glossier (which I hate) but lower rez compared to the MBA!
To add insult to injury, they will prolly also release a retina display version of the ipad before the end of the year and at the same price point as the current model, which will only make me feels worse.

But 3 months ago when you bought your MBP the MBA screen was already higher resolution? Your machine isn't obsolete; it's still a damn fine computer that will last you for years. Ask yourself if you were happy with the machine last week? Nothing's changed since then other than new machines might be out soon. I've had my MPB for 3 years and love it; solid machine and still working brilliantly... screen is way too glossy though.

MacRumors conveniently failed to quote this portion of the report:

"It [AppleInsider] however warned on multiple occasions not to expect the new Macs this week, despite continuous unsubstantiated claims published elsewhere on the web that have ultimately proven to be grossly inaccurate and overhyped."

:D

This is the second time this week that MR cherry picks an AppleInsider article, leaving out info related to release dates. (See the backlit keys article for the other.)

Should we just start reading AppleInsider instead?

Not happy.

So,

MacBook Air 1.8 GHz Core i7, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD.

How much?

US ? = $1399

UK? = £2399 then 20% tax.... etc etc

Seriously though.. I do hope the UK pricing is good. Even I am tempted to get one and sell off my mbp or give it to my gf.

4GB ram seems like a no-brainer, but 128GB SSD? I think I'd like the option of 64GB and pay $100 less. 64GB is fine for operating system + iTunes music files + iPhoto collection + my Dropbox files. 128GB -- what do I get really? I can't even begin to store my video files on that...

Applications ;)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Ahh, I forgot about the superdrive. That would be the only thing that would make me think twice but I still I don't think that would put me off. I use it so rarely I think I'd be okay with having am external one.

I can still see the benefits of the mbp for many people but, if these rumours turn out to be true, I think I'll be getting the mba.

If I could get an 11inch 128GB for $999 I'd buy, maybe..

Speaking for myself, the only time I ever used the Superdrive is when reinstall SL. Before I just decided to use an old external and break it up into different partitions for the DVDs

Lios is a Ram Hog, i I will be happy if AIR includes a 3g or 4g or module but they are scared to underrate the ipad. Anyone prefer the 11" air with 3g than an ipad.

True, but at the same time I was a happy camper with the MBP because it had a backlit keyboard which the MBA did not and also came with double the base memory. If the rumors are correct, the updated MBA will have a backlit keyboard, same amount of ram and prolly a non soldered SSD for more or less the same price point.

Not happy.

I never knew unprofessional commentary was a reason to switch to reading something. AI likes to spin stories in theirs or Apple's favor. Every rumors site has its hits and misses. For all we know, Apple simply missed their internally targeted launch date of today.

Nope, alot still have 2 or 3GB as standard.
Ok I know "alot" is a relative term but I disagree.

According to Best Buy -> PC Laptops (He said laptops, no netbooks)
2GB RAM - 6
3GB RAM - 19
4GB RAM - 103
6GB RAM - 38
8GB RAM - 16

27 out of 182 isn't a lot to me.

So,

MacBook Air 1.8 GHz Core i7, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD.

How much?

same price. They can't afford to put prices up in this climate, and costs will have dropped for RAM etc since the previous MBA.

Apple seem to have two refresh approaches: keep the spec similar but make cosmetic changes and cut the price; or bump the spec and keep the price. This sounds like the latter.

so with basic educational store discount (I have kids at primary school), the base 13" should be just over £1k
