Really hoping for a Skylake 27" retina on Tuesday, but like most here I think it is unlikely. A minor Broadwell bump seems more likely at this stage. My early 2009 iMac has served me well but is really creaking now, so not sure I can hold out until next year.

I guess that from being a no rumour zone things are now flying in anticipation of Tuesday. :)

Thinking seriously about it what can we realisticaly expect.

Please feel free to add, amend, discuss, etc.

Skylake or Broadwell?

It's got to be Skylake. I can't see any other option unless Apple really want a specific chip that isn't readily available yet. If the likes of Dell and Asus can get a Skylake PC out of the door then I fail to see how or why Apple can't do the same.

Next generation i7 and i5 processors?

Pretty much a given, even though I've not seen many complaining about a lack of horsepower on any recent iMac the newer Skylake processors may not be a quantum leap forward in terms of speed but they do represent lower power consumption which would lead to lower heat output which can only be a good thing.

New design of case?

That I can't personally see happening. I know that an iMac update isn't exactly as media interest worthy as a new iPhone but surely if there were any major changes we would have heard about it.

Any changes as a result of different outputs on the back are hardly going to be noticeable.

4K 21.5" iMac

We've had rumours about this and seen some code from EC that suggests that this is going to happen.

8K 27" iMac

And conversely we've not seen anything from EC that suggests this is going to happen. We're struggling to get graphics cards that allow decent levels of gaming at a temperature much below that of steam on a 5K screen. Imagine the kind of graphics card that would be needed to run an 8K screen.

Sorry, in my opinion I think the graphics cards will be playing catch up for a couple of years yet before we start to think of 8K screens outside of very high specific scenarios.

nvidia or AMD?

I know there are those who really like their nvidia chipsets but the scraps of code that reporters have picked up on would suggest that it's more likely to be variants on a 395 than anything that nvidia currently sell.

3D touch track pad/mouse?

That would be nice to have but seeing as that is as much about code recognising the levels of pressure as the hardware and that no one has yet to my knowledge dug anything out of EC suggesting that OS support is there then I'd have to say this one isn't likely to happen this year.

USB C?

more likely, now that we have gotten this interface on the macbook it's only a matter of time before it moves across to the iMac. The big question will be whether it is as well as USB Type A or instead of.

Thunderbolt 3?

If Skylake is the chipset then this is pretty much a given, especially as it's rumoured to use USB-C connectors which would make things a bit less congested round the back.

No 1tb Fusion option

Possibly a bit contentious but the only reason people like the Fusion drive is that it gives you the capacity of a HDD and the speed of a SSD. It was only ever a stepping stone to a SSD only future.

The price fall on SSD's over the last year is making Apples prices for these drives ridiculously expensive even for Apple.

So I'm thinking perhaps a 512GB SSD base option, usual upgrade options up to 2tb with a 3tb fusion option for those with lots of data and dislike cables.

Any comments?

Sounds great to me. I don't need or want 8k, at that point it's literally overkill. Just give me upgraded specs.

And you're forgetting about broadwell. Which it could most likely be.

Good summary!

Totally agree about Skylake, I'd be very surprised and disappointed if Apple doesn't pull through on that one. To all the people saying there's not enough inventory/production on skylake chips yet, it's like you're forgetting who Apple is. They're probably the reason there's a shortage ;)

Good point about no code being found about 3D/force touch trackpads. I can see that going either way, it's pretty much a given - just a matter of when. If force touch doesn't come on Tuesday, surely it couldn't be further away than with an early 2016 refresh. Which begs the question - what are the differences going to be between this October model and next years if we get skylake and TB3 now? There's also the option they just release the new Magic Mouse/trackpads as standalone accessories in the next few months, maybe to coincide with the release of Apple Pencil? Though that wouldn't make them look too good if they just shipped a refresh with older mouse tech. My bet is we'll see it this update.

Ughhh just wanna know already haha! Bring on Tuesday! Regardless I'll be buying this update. Been waiting too long :D

I don't see Apple putting a 512GB SSD for the base model. Just like the 16GB iPhone, Apple wants your money!!

Haha agreed. Cheaper upgrade cost *maybe* but even that's a stretch if it's just a silent update.

I really doubt iMac will get force touch this year, otherwise there would be some sign of it in El Capitan.

I doubt we'll get thunderbolt 3 because 9to5Mac, who got information about the next iMacs, never mentioned it.
:(
And they have proven to be very well informed. They revealed most of the 12" Macbook weeks before it was released.

OTOH, they apparently didn't get information on the new mouse and keyboard. That was revealed by OS X 10.11.1 beta.

They haven't even had the slightest mention of possibly 27 refresh of any sort correct ? Strictly 4K 21.5?

The information about the new mouse was leaked 2 months ago by the FCC.

There isn't any info about an update for the 27 model, but minor updates of iMac models usually never leak, they just appear in stores or are simply announced. Even the top of the line 5K model is approaching one year since release. So it wouldn't surprise me if all the iMac models get updates.

By the way Mark Gurman of 9to5mac is probably the best mac journalist out there, his reports and predictions are always accurate.

Correct, and this is not encouraging. If the upgrade mostly concerned the display, (meaning no Skylake, just broadwell, no TB 3), there would be almost nothing new about the 27". Just an improved panel to match the color gamut of the 21", slightly faster GPUs and CPUs. That would explain the lack of rumor regarding the 27".

Well, considering my 2011 27" iMac just died, I'm looking forward to a Skylake model!

Mine died 5 months ago. Been holding myself over on a rMBP.

Is this normal longevity for the iMac?

I'm researching for a possible purchase of a Mac. I'm mostly new to Mac, only owned one briefly last year. I've learned a bit from reading this thread and MacRumors in general. Big thanks for that.
