I edited my post above after your quote, but I guess anything is plausible. If they're ramping up production of 21.5" 4Ks, maybe it's coming at the expense of 27" BTO's? It's all just wild speculation though. I have no idea about Apple's production capacity, supply chain, etc. We don't even know for sure there's a 4k 21.5" in the works.

If the date hadn't slipped, I wouldn't have cancelled my order. Once they pushed it back, though, it made it easier to wait since I was going to be waiting either way. I've accepted it now. :D

Ah. Yeah, I think I am in the same boat. I'm going to go ahead and cancel , cross fingers and then order 5k one way or the other come Tuesday

The good news is that if you order Tuesday, and it truly takes them 2-3 weeks to deliver it, between that wait and the 14 day return window, you still have well over a month to get your money back and buy the update if it drops.

Hahaha true. I find it hard to believe they really are 2-3 weeks on BTO.

MBP BTO is still around 3 days. They aren't holding off iMacs for 21.5 builds .. I hope !

I'm so pumped. The additional date slipping on 27" BTO is a great sign. Plus that Amazon stuff that was mentioned

I will probably buy even if it's Broadwell, but I would certainly prefer Skylake in order to be as current as possible for that $3k.

This. I need a new computer so il buy. But skylake is the obvious preference. I just don't see it happening.

Just saw a 3.3ghz imac with a M290x that's strange. I thought they were only built with the M290. I still don't like the "NEW" label above the iMac 3.3. I feel like this model will stay.

Apple has always equated larger screen sizes with more features, speed and all. They cannot bump the 21.5" CPUs to the new generation, improve the panel, without doing the same for the 27". The only exception was perhaps the 17" MacBook Pro that never got retina'ed (was it discontinued before? I can't remember). Surely, the 27" will stay around, so the situation is different.

Weren't the 21.5 rumors almost strictly related to going 4K and not so much skylake though ?

Indeed, there was no leak about the CPU. 9to5mac only mentioned faster GPUs. But perhaps that just was in comparison to the current (integrated) GPUs in the 21.5". So that's a given.
It's not impossible that the updated panel and GPUs will be the only new features, and that we have to wait several month for a GPU/CPU update.
However, OS X has references to new GPUs, including the 395x, which should go in the 27". Those will be in iMacs sooner than later. And it would be strange for Apple not to update the CPUs as well.

At the very least, if they provide a better panel for the 21.5" with better colors, the 27" will get the same treatment.

Hm. Interesting. I've been thinking silent refresh on the 21.5, but GPU and 4K aren't really silent refresh types really. Tuesday should be interesting

Before the 27" iMac went Retina the top of the line iMac had a 4GB Geforce GPU. Does anyone know what model it was? 980M? 970m? other?

Nevermind. I found out: "This model has a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory. At the time of purchase, it could be custom configured with a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M with 4 GB of dedicated GDDR5 memory for an extra US$150."

thought I would share may be nothing, I've got a 5k imac on order with upgrades, I ordered it on the first of October and got an approximate delivery date of the 13th, asked if this was a normal amount of time to wait and was told there was a high demand plus the upgrades so will take slightly longer, didn't really question it, a couple of days a go I got an email to say that the expected date of delivery now is the 16th to the 20th of October, so thought I would get in touch with apple online, in the chat I asked why the date was put back and again he said high demand and that its not common for apple to put the date back, I then asked why it might be that the delivery date could be up to the 20th and that this seemed a long time to wait, and that I had seen on this site that people have mentioned a possible update to the imac range, the guy never said no to a possible update but went on to say that it could well be a possibility for the reason for the delay!, he then mentioned that if its an update that's causing the delay and mines not shipped with the update that I have 14 days to send it back for any reason plus he said apple will give a special grace to customers that have ordered a mac in an upgrade period of up to 3/4 weeks to send it back? not really sure what to make of it! then to end the conversation he then said good luck and that he hopes its an update. what do you guy think

My gut feeling tells me it's a very small update to the internals of the 27". I could see them saving Skylake, TB3, DDR4 and whatever else for a larger redesign sometime next year. Apple gives no fu*ks about being first, they'll still sell more than anybody else and and continue to make grillions of dollars.

And to be honest, if they do nothing else but deal with the cooling concerns of the M295X, that's good enough for me. I use my computer for professional work, but CPU/GPU power isn't critical to me. Maxing out the internals just helps the machine be useful for longer, and gives me some adequate gaming performance for the occasional distraction.

Bu they were first with Thubderbolt, USB 3, retina displays, etc.
