Same exact situation as me, lol! I have the 27" 3.4 GHz i7 model with 12GB of RAM just sitting on the floor. I also assumed it has the same issues so mine is also on the floor, lol!
haha. Nice. And I had such grand plans for mine to be a media server

I have the fusiondrive and the writespeed is 700mb/s, the readspeed is the same (~700).
From what I can gather online the read/write speed will vary based on where the data is housed for Fusion Drive, as most of the storage space is a physical disk.

Looking forward to get a new iMac, i have a 21' mid 2010 and want a 27´ mainly to work in audio production!
If it doesn't come with skylake i will probably get a used one from 2013 and upgrade again when thunderbolt 3 and ddr4 become available!

Even though I think the update is imminent, I'm surprised it's so quiet considering the 21 is getting such a big refresh. I'm starting to doubt something big like a new keyboard and mouse are coming. Surely the rumor mill would be going crazy if something like that was happening. But a quiet spec bump is still very likely. Keyboard? Maybe not

the only chance that 27" imac get refresh is tomorrow along with the 4k 21.5"
If not, we will be seeing next year

My expectation is a spec bump. 4K iMac is possible, but I seriously doubt a new product like the keyboard or mouse will be a silent update. I'm hoping to see a bump even though I've got a Macbook Pro recently. I'm still within my return window, but I don't think I'll jump on it if it's something like a 395x (which, as we've all heard the rumors doesn't look like it's that big of a jump...).

I also have serious doubts we'll see TB3 without a keynote. That's just too big of a deal for them not to do one; probably because it'll also include a Thunderbolt Display refresh. My guess for big updates is early next year, unless they end up sending invites for an event like... tomorrow. Which may happen, it's early enough they may do a follow-up for the AppleTV and iPad Pro.

All that to say, we might see Skylake without TB3 tomorrow, and likely won't until there's an event.

Hate to be that person, but what is the Skylake that people are referring to? Sorry, I don't pay much attention between purchases, and seeing as how I bought my current MBP in 2010, I'm pretty much out of the loop. I'm looking at moving to an iMac though, so I'm curious to know what all the chatter is about Skylake.

Cheers!

The short of it is it's the new, faster, cooler, more feature-rich processor line from Intel. It was delayed a lot and so a lot of us are kinda itching for it. Also it's supposed to support things like 5K displays more natively. Once a Mac has Skylake, a lot of us are expecting to see multiple product updates all at once, or in a very short amount of time.

Real world, out of the box however you'll see about 5-10% faster computation speeds, but it SHOULD run cooler, potentially extending the life of the device. Many people who hold onto them for 5+ years find that an attractive notion. :)

Skylake is the codename for Intel's 6th Generation processors. The current processors in the iMacs are all 4th Generation Haswell processors, though we might see 5th generation Broadwell processors. The massive delays has caused Intel to release both 5th and 6th within the same year, causing a huge cluster. At this point, no one knows what is Apple is going to go with.

Most of the folks are wanting the ports that go along with it these processors, such as USB-C and thunderbolt 3. Thunderbolt 3 will allow the retina iMac to be used as an external display. Performance-wise, you wouldn't know the difference between 4th, 5th, and 6th in all but the most taxing tasks.

Brilliant, thanks for the quick reply, Inksworth!

My 2010 MBP has served me faithfully for the last 5 years, but I'd like to move to a desktop at this point. The MBP is still a fine machine and will serve its own purposes, but I'm looking forward to having a proper 'sit-down' setup. Glad to hear that there could be new hardware developments on the horizon.

Thanks again for enlightening this dunderhead. :)

Hey, TZ, thanks for the input. I'm getting the gist of it now, I think. I've got to look into this Thunderbolt stuff now too. Eesh, I evidently haven't looked up much from my MBP in the last 5 years, haha.

Take a look at the skarsta desk from ikea. I got one and it's also very affordable.

Tomorrow is the day folks.

Today is the day where I am!

Hoping for a good update to the 27 5k. Fought the urge to purchase in June and haven't thought all that much about it since then but am getting twitchy again and don't know if I'll be able to hold out until next year. 2007 iMac can't handle much beyond basic browsing and email now.
