In terms of write speed the fusion drive and current iMac SSDs seem close. It's the read speed that's ridiculously faster on SSD.How much faster is the SSD vs Fusion, I tried it in the Apple Store and Fusion smoked Optical.

haha. Nice. And I had such grand plans for mine to be a media serverSame exact situation as me, lol! I have the 27" 3.4 GHz i7 model with 12GB of RAM just sitting on the floor. I also assumed it has the same issues so mine is also on the floor, lol!
Don't forget the GPUs in 2013 were already two years old. Now coming up to 4 years. You should see all the misery in the MacPro forum. Selling late 2013 components at their 2013 prices is a tough pill to swallow.
From what I can gather online the read/write speed will vary based on where the data is housed for Fusion Drive, as most of the storage space is a physical disk.I have the fusiondrive and the writespeed is 700mb/s, the readspeed is the same (~700).
HP just announced their new AIO with skylake. Windows also announced with skylake. Why can't Apple? 'Cause they need much larger volume of the chips..?
Even though I think the update is imminent, I'm surprised it's so quiet considering the 21 is getting such a big refresh. I'm starting to doubt something big like a new keyboard and mouse are coming. Surely the rumor mill would be going crazy if something like that was happening. But a quiet spec bump is still very likely. Keyboard? Maybe not
Hate to be that person, but what is the Skylake that people are referring to? Sorry, I don't pay much attention between purchases, and seeing as how I bought my current MBP in 2010, I'm pretty much out of the loop. I'm looking at moving to an iMac though, so I'm curious to know what all the chatter is about Skylake.
Cheers!
Skylake is the codename for Intel's 6th Generation processors. The current processors in the iMacs are all 4th Generation Haswell processors, though we might see 5th generation Broadwell processors. The massive delays has caused Intel to release both 5th and 6th within the same year, causing a huge cluster. At this point, no one knows what is Apple is going to go with.Hate to be that person, but what is the Skylake that people are referring to? The short of it is it's the new, faster, cooler, more feature-rich processor line from Intel. It was delayed a lot and so a lot of us are kinda itching for it. Also it's supposed to support things like 5K displays more natively. Once a Mac has Skylake, a lot of us are expecting to see multiple product updates all at once, or in a very short amount of time.
Real world, out of the box however you'll see about 5-10% faster computation speeds, but it SHOULD run cooler, potentially extending the life of the device. Many people who hold onto them for 5+ years find that an attractive notion.![]()

Most of the folks are wanting the ports that go along with it these processors, such as USB-C and thunderbolt 3. Thunderbolt 3 will allow the retina iMac to be used as an external display. Performance-wise, you wouldn't know the difference between 4th, 5th, and 6th in all but the most taxing tasks.
Brilliant, thanks for the quick reply, Inksworth!
My 2010 MBP has served me faithfully for the last 5 years, but I'd like to move to a desktop at this point. The MBP is still a fine machine and will serve its own purposes, but I'm looking forward to having a proper 'sit-down' setup. Glad to hear that there could be new hardware developments on the horizon.
Thanks again for enlightening this dunderhead.![]()
The suspense is killing me! I want a 27" 5k iMac! What are we thinking the chances of a 27" refresh is? 50/50? Higher?
I'm gonna say 80% for 4k 21.5", 40% for 27", 20% that it's Skylake.The suspense is killing me! I want a 27" 5k iMac! What are we thinking the chances of a 27" refresh is? 50/50? Higher?
Tomorrow is the day folks.
