How much faster is the SSD vs Fusion, I tried it in the Apple Store and Fusion smoked Optical.
The SSD won't be much faster than the SSD portion of the Fusion Drive, but you're gonna notice the loading times once the Fusion has to access the HDD portion. It's no deal breaker though - some of us just want the spinner to be gone :)

SSD and HDD is like day and night.
Before you think you need to spec out the processor or ram opt for a SSD.
Fushion drive is somewhere in between....a bit more on SSD side than on HDD side....it depends where the data are stored which have to be loaded. However the things you use most are mainly on the SSD part of a fushion drive therefore the performance of a fushion drive is much better than of a classic HDD.

plus the noise, since the iMacs are so quiet in general, the hard drive contributes a huge chunk of overall noise level

That's great, crying is what mac users do best.

I did notice entries named 'Intel10SeriesAHCI' in the system kexts so support looks to already there in the latest builds.

21.5" 4K Possible, not for sure. The runes sure point towards it happening but I guess we'll find out in seven hours.

new keyboard/mouse very unlikely IMO. It's in the pipeline but if you start sticking too many things on you really need a presentation.

That's why I think the majority of any items will be effectively invisible to the majority of consumers.

New ports on the back, faster processors, faster SSDs, more/faster memory. Those are the kinds of things that are part of a silent update.

To be honest if there weren't so many credible rumours towards the 4K 21.5" today I'd put that down as a non-starter without a presentation.

Plus didn't you know it's an 'S' year ;)

In general I definitely agree with your thinking, but 3D Touch has been demo'd/marketed/presented heaps already with the iPhone 6S and iPad Pro, and Force Touch with the 2015 MacBook Pro's. So I doubt they would make another keynote event just for bringing the same tech to a $69 accessory. I think we'll see new keyboards/mouse/trackpads.

You may very well be right. ;)

My general thinking is that invisible, no point in a media event.

The majority of people are just not interested in updated chipsets or faster processors.

Obviously by posting here you are admitting to being of the breed that is very much interested in that kind of update.

Visible, Apple will want to show it off.

This is why I am convinced that if there is a refresh today there won't be much, if any, changes to the case, no visibly different keyboard, mouse, trackpad.

Maybe a few minor differences and, certainly if the internal evidence within Apple is suggesting that they are getting a large number of returns or AppleCare claims due to excessive heat damage, possibly a minor cooling redesign.
