For someone who wants to keep the machine for a LONG time though...

Target Display mode would allow for a long life as an external display and TB3 will likely enable things like real external GPU upgrades....

...and USB-C?

It would be VERY Apple like to go "all USB-C ports" immediately at some point not too far off and leave everyone using adapters. They *love* to do the "here's the new thing - deal with it" routine and the MacBook has shown us they may do just that w/ USB-C

Gah! That's what scares me, to be honest. I'd ideally like to make this next purchase last as long as my 2010 MBP has, so it would be a real kick to gut if, buying an imac now, they come out with a model next year that triggers a change in the ports that everything uses.

Blah, first-world problems, as they say.

Btw, why do so many of you opt for M395X without hesitation? If you say budget is not a problem to you I can understand. I plan to get a Mac for occasional photo editing, so I may not need all powers that M395X can give me and 250 is not a small sum to me. So I wonder what motivate you for the M395X?

The tech specs for the new 27in 5K say that it can support 2 4K monitors thru Thunderbolt 2 or 1 5K display with dual cables. Not really sure if people are reading that. What's with the Target display mode that everyone wants?

That's not what Target Display Mode is. (it's the opposite direction)

Australian pricing just went up and the cost of M395X is insane so I'm wondering the same thing. What would be the downsides of settling for the middle M395 (base gfx card in top end model)?

...Yep, and it will be a serious resale value killer when they do something major with the ports since there are lots of implications with those sorts of changes.

Pretty sure that's just about using external monitors. It doesn't have Target display yet, which is basically using the iMac screen as a monitor, for example, making it display a plugged in macbook's desktop.

I know this is a niche thing, but one really awesome use of Target Display mode is if you have a Windows Gaming PC and you'd like to use the iMac as just the "screen" for that gaming machine (since iMac's fall short in the gaming area).

That's a use of Target Display mode that isn't even about longevity, but for many people is a practical use right when they get the machine (Well, not the 5k iMac's yet anyhow)

For clarification, does the statement mean you can extend the desktop of your 5K iMac to 2 more 4K monitors or 1 5K monitor but it does not mention anything about using the 5K display as the screen of another Mac?

Well, dang.

Is there a general feeling for how far off this potential switch to USB-C is? I realize it's all speculative at this juncture, but it does seem like an inevitability, so it would be nice to ballpark when the changeover might happen.

Video editing. Premiere Pro uses all of the power and memory of the graphics card. If you are not manipulating RAW photos with a massive megapixel count (now, or in the next 3-4 years) then save your cash.

Fall 2016, if at all on the iMacs (thunderbolt 3 supports USB C). But instead of using a retina iMac in display mode, you'd be better off selling the full computer in 4 years time and purchasing a dedicated external monitor and pocket the difference.

As others have said, there's always going to be something new worth waiting for. It's not just Apple. Virtually anything electronic these days are "outdated" within 6 months. Last year I built a Windows PC, maxed out, with the best money could buy on all parts. Cost me $2500 to build. Within six months, better graphics cards were out. A couple of months after that Skylake processors were out. A better SSD came out two months after I built my machine.

Point is, you're going to be waiting forever if you want the "best" and it will only be the best for a few months. At some point you have to live and enjoy life, not wait for it. :)

As for the USB-C... Yes, someday it will be become the new standard. When? Who knows. By the time it becomes mainstream, there will probably be another USB format that's ready to take over. It never ends!

Are there any benefits to the Magic Mouse, or is it best to get the Trackpad included (for $50 extra) so we have Force Touch, and then use a regular mouse if you don't love trackpads?
I tried both old ones and the mouse was much better. I couldn't get used to the trackpad, despite using one without a mouse nowadays on a Macbook. I did used to get sore wrists from the mouse though, which isn't an issue with a Macbook track pad. I shall be returning to the mouse.

lol - As opposed to iMac's which always ship with out of date graphics when "new" - haha

Not sure why you think this will take so long - It's coming fast and I think the new MacBook Pro's will be onboard with their next update for certain. 1 year from now it'll be on the entire Mac lineup (perhaps save the Mac Mini)

But if you have a Windows gaming PC, that should be one powerful piece of tech and you can just get a 4k monitor at a reasonable price (depending on the size) to go with it. And you're right, very niche. If you still want a 5k iMac, an additional 4k monitor right next to it would be sweet.

There is a clear statement saying that target display mode is not supported for the new updates. Well, they have one more thing to claim in the next upgrade.
I'm sure it's not supported, but technically when it says "The iMac (Retina 5k, 27-inch, Mid 2015) can't be used as Target Display Mode displays" - wouldn't that Mid 2015 refer to the lower spec'd model they came out with a few months ago? Surely this refresh would be called Late 2015. Meaning it's not mentioned in that doc yet..?

I suppose if you have the space for that, that's fine. Personally, I have one workspace and no desire or room for 2 side by side monitors.

Haha, yes, the rate of change is pretty maddening.

I suppose any change in the USB format wouldn't be the end of the world, as there would be adapters, as annoying as those can be.

Ok, I'll pull the trigger on one of these if you do. You first! :)

Hey...

For basic computing are there any advantages in going for the M390 over the M380?

The price difference is £55 ($85) after discount.

Its not actually for me but for my partners grandfather who won't be using the iMac for anything pressing.

Regards.

Thanks for correcting. I think I misread it.

Btw, is the SSD in the fusion drive 24GB or 128GB? I am confused with the previous discussions.
