Btw, is the SSD in the fusion drive 24GB or 128GB? I am confused with the previous discussions.
1TB fusion contains 24GB flash/SSD portion. The 2TB and 3TB fusion's have 128GB. Confirmed by Ars Technica & other reviews posted on front page MacRumors earlier. I'd strongly be considering a look at the pure SSD options now that they're 2.5 times faster than the last (& already fast) version!

Pure SSD is awesome in terms of speed. 24GB can barely hold the OS, which sounds terrible to me. For people with limited budget who want a machine with large storage that lasts long like me, I prefer to stick with fusion drive.

Fair enough! Personally I'd be getting the 2 or 3TB one then :) Here's the full text on it from Ars Tech:

"1TB Fusion Drives now pair just 24GB of flash storage with a 1TB hard drive, not 128GB as in previous generations. This is going to be enough to speed up boot times as well as launch times for built-in apps and some frequently-loaded apps and files, though you may notice the system hitting the hard drive more often than it would with a 128GB SSD. Apple tells us that the Fusion Drive algorithm for these new drives is less aggressive about moving things from HDD to SSD, as well, primarily to limit the amount of wear on the flash."

Oh really? You switched your decision that fast? :p

Haha, yes, the rate of change is pretty maddening.

I suppose any change in the USB format wouldn't be the end of the world, as there would be adapters, as annoying as those can be.

Ok, I'll pull the trigger on one of these if you do. You first! :)

LOL yeah, I'm debating it hard. Only thing stopping me is that my washing machine went out last week and this week I have to replace it. So I'm hesitant on two major purchases in the same week. I'd be buying the iMac out of my savings, which is "supposed" to be for a new car next year, but hey what's $2,000?! lol.

I don't know. Now I'm back interested in this since there is confirmation of the 5k display updated. Thinking.

lol - As opposed to iMac's which always ship with out of date graphics when "new" - haha

Not sure why you think this will take so long - It's coming fast and I think the new MacBook Pro's will be onboard with their next update for certain. 1 year from now it'll be on the entire Mac lineup (perhaps save the Mac Mini)

Yeah you got me there on the outdated graphics lol. That is irritating, and one of the issues I've had making a full conversion to Apple. A couple of months ago I was so disgusted with Google that I switched to an iPhone, from Android. Now, I'm so pissed at Microsoft with Windows 10 that I'm ready to jump the fence. I guess you can't have everything lol.

As for USB-C... It's ironic, I'm in Network and System Engineering, but I'm not very up-to-date on the latest tech (mainly because I work with legacy hardware in an Army environment.) I honestly hadn't heard of USB-C until this thread! So I could be wrong on it's adaptation.

Haha everyone's different, I do get why people opt for fusions but personally I'd never let a spinner in my computer ever again. Just no point trying to convince people to go against what they deem best for their own needs, you're the best person to judge your situation. Plus it's valuable time I could be spending clicking through all the BTO options like an OCD maniac hoping it all magically becomes cheaper :p

The real value might be scoring from somebody with more $ than brains who offloads a maxed out 1st gen 5k just to "have the latest and greatest".

So, the M390 paired with an i7 should be okay for editing images correct? Lightroom and photoshop?

So the screen was upgraded, the keyboard/mouse/trackpad are upgraded, the Fusion drive was downgraded, 21.5 graphics were downgraded, 27 graphics are a rebrand.. But they added the word "Magic"?

It does sound like the 27" Mac does have a Skylake CPU (they call it "sixth-gen") on the product page- but no word on whether DDR4 RAM is supported.. And disappointing to see no USB 3.1-C and Thunderbolt 3.. That last bit- plus maybe a better graphics card- would make this a must-buy for me. Really really need a new computer..

Yes. It will be better than practically all previous i7s, and iMacs have been excellent for Lightroom and Photoshop for years.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/10/apple-goes-all-retina-for-its-27-inch-skylake-imac-refresh/

Ars Technica does say this:

"Non-Retina iMacs never got Thunderbolt 2 so this is the first time it's been available across the entire lineup—all of these computers can drive two external 4K displays at 60Hz. You can drive an external 5K display at 60Hz as well, but because the new iMacs don't support DisplayPort 1.3 it requires the use of both Thunderbolt ports."

Is this new? Not ideal, but nice.. and seems to raise the possibility of an external GPU being plugged into both ports instead of a single Thunderbolt 3..

I do quite a bit of gaming + design on my mac and have been waiting for this update :D
The top GPU should work for me, but is 16GB ram enough for gaming? Or is it worth investing in more RAM...

I don't care much about TB3 or USB-C, but I was really hoping for a 2TB SSD option...looks like one more year for those. Anyways, I can't wait any longer, I'm getting this one now, and I might exchange it next year if a suitable upgrade is released.

Sorry to post this again but l've been waiting since 2007 to buy a new iMac and needed advice from people more computer savvy then me. Thanks for any response.
So I too, need the advice. Been waiting a long time for this upgrade and hoping that this one will last me just as long ( I am retiring next March so I want to buy this now). I am currently using a:

24" 2007 iMac 2.4GHz intel core 2 duo, 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM with ATi Radeon 1TB HD 2600 Pro 256 MB. My capacity is 749.3 GB of which I am using 77.95GB.

Not a big power user, email, internet, do run Photoshop Elements 12, Photo Mechanic. I do have Final Cut Express HD on this computer but almost never use it now. A few games, mostly Angry Birds. Almost never running more than one program at the same time. So I am looking at the:

27" 5K Retina iMac with the 4.0 GHz quad core, 512GB flash storage and 8GB memory which I will probably upgrade to 16 myself.)

I do have a 1TB external hard drive that I am using. I know pretty much anything I get will be an improvement so just wondering what people think. My one big question is the processor choice. Am I better off with the 3.2GHz considering my usage and saving the $300? This is my Christmas present to myself and just want to be sure I have covered my bases. Thanks so much for any help.
