Yipes ???

Apple has "cheaped out" on this one, at least in the baseline fusion drive configuration.

Looks like you have to get the 2tb fusion option in order to get 128gb of flash drive installed...

Because I need a new computer and now I'm getting one. Pretty exciting imo.

Yep, for someone like me, who is moving from my 2010 MBP, it represents an exciting change. I can understand, however, that those already with an iMac might not be overwhelmed by the day's developments. I'll be glad for the upgrade in performance and simply the overall change in setup, going from a laptop to a desktop.

Hate to be the idiot here, but for whatever reason, the RAM in the new Skylake is apparently "1867MHz," everywhere else I look for the after-market RAM has "1866." Would the 1866MHz RAM work with this? I'd really like to get the 8GB of RAM for the maxed out 27 inch and upgrade it to 32 afterwards, I just don't wanna spend the ridiculous $600 for that RAM upgrade.

The ram speed is 1866.6666666. They just round up the number to 1867. They are exactly the same speed. You'll be fine.

Pretty happy with the upgrades overall, congrats to all you who waited for Skylake on the 27".

Anyone have any idea or indications on the pcie storage speeds?

This really isn't the iMac to get.

Waiting for TB3 and USB-C are really good ideas for forward looking compatibility.
Sadly I agree. Very underwhelming despite getting Skylake. Wouldn't be surprised to see a refresh in 6 months with those ports. I was looking at getting a Thunderbolt storage box to speed my workflow up/tide me over until a 2016 refresh, but then I thought what's the point? The box would be TB2 based anyway and thus no reason to wait for a TB3 refresh. Will most likely just bite the bullet, been needing a new comp for ages anyway.

Yeah… As always if you need a computer now it's a great machine but for anybody with some time flexibility I would really strongly advise waiting for the next version

Well I agree with you there. If you have the 2014 retina iMac, definitely no good reasons to upgrade. For the vast majority of people in this thread with various 2010-2013 Macs, its better news than I had expected. Especially given the lack of rumors and an Apple keynote. I think most of the rumors were probably drowned out by the iPhone 6s launching last week.

Sticking with my 680mx until next fall to wait for the new I/O ports and they'll probably go back to NVIDIA, or see what the new Macbook Pro offers when it get the new ports.

With my 2009 iMac I don't think it's worth waiting. I'm not sure what good TB3 would really do me in daily use.

Same story here - my 2007 iMac is slower than a snail and it's time to get something better and faster. Was waiting for the Skylake upgrade

Are the slots for DDR3 and DDR4 the same? I'm curious if this thing will take both. Not even sure if that's technically possible.

As for the lack of faster ports, not a big deal for my use case. I imagine if you're one of those who needs faster ports, buying a new machine must be truly agonizing, because there's always something faster right on the horizon.

Thanks for providing an alternative perspective. As someone seriously considering purchasing one of these to move from a 5-year old MBP, I appreciate looking at it from another angle. Do you know what sort of resale value iMacs tend to have? Just thinking of a scenario in which I were to purchase one of the newly released iMacs, then sell it off if a significant upgrade comes along in the next 6 months. Sounds silly, I suppose, when I could likely just put off a purchase that long anyway, but just trying to think of all possibilities.

I know not everybody cares about this but one of the big reasons to wait for TB3 is so you can finally use the retina iMac as a target display which vastly extends its life once the internals are outdated

I've done the iMac rotation couple times in the last six years and about every single time you going to take about $1000-$1500 hit if not more depending upon what specs.

The main reason for this is that they continue to sell refurbished ones that get more and more discounted and the new ones come out at essentially the same price points every time despite being much better machines all the time

All that said a Mac at least actually has some reasonably good and high resale value which we really can't say for most other types of computers.

The imacs are definitely great machines but I personally do not like having the internals tied to the display as I would really prefer a different upgrade cycle for those two components.

There will always be something better round the corner. In all aspects of life. Eternally waiting for it is one way to make sure that you will never be satisfied with what is available now.

I am getting this one.. most likely early Nov.

Haha wow. Skylake CPU in the 27", but none of the benefits of Skylake. So typically "Apple." Despite the move to skylake, this is a little underwhelming, and basically the same as if they had updated to Broadwell. I know I said I'd buy even if Broadwell, but I may wait for reviews on heat and GPUs. Plus, I will be really upset if they release an update in 6 months with TB3 and USB-C, etc. I dont think my 2010 MBP can handle another 6 months. The trackpad is almost totally popped out on the left side haha

Seriously only Apple can add the Skylake processors and literally add nothing the people screaming for skylake were clamoring for.(TB3, DDR4, etc.) :p
Exactly what I was thinking

It's not as black-and-white as you're making it seem… Some upgrades truly are worth waiting for in terms of forward compatibility and machine longevity.

Especially if like me, you plan on keeping the machine for 5 years as I almost have with my current one :)

That said though, being on such an old machine is *really* eating into my current productivity and workflow so I think missing out on TB3/target display is a necessary evil :/ If you can afford to wait though, I suggest doing so.

I don't see what would be gained from Apple upgrading these again until next fall. TB3 and USB C are such minor upgrades and these 27 Retina iMacs have the very, very latest and fastest desktop chips and fasted SSD options. A Skylake refresh will happen late next year and if Apple sticks to it's now fairly regular cycle, new iPhones in September and new iMacs next October with everything ticking upward: clock speed, graphics, perhaps ports, memory speed and screens. There is always the chance of a redesign as well. But again, next year. Grab it now. These are fantastic machines. Apple knocked it out of the park with the retina last year (despite the naysayers, you can't get a PC with this build quality, ergonomics, and quality screen for anything close to the amount of money, especially in an all in one). Griping about what is included on the low end is silly. Just configure what you want, compromise where you must, and buy a machine that will be fantastic for years to come.
