No reason at all to critique you! The machine is what you're looking for and that's great!

Not sure I'd lump in the KB/Mouse though - That's an update that the iMac shouldn't get credit for.

I suppose your right there. However they're included and I would consider buying them separately if they weren't.

I've been going back and forth all day on whether or not to purchase one of these. Early this morning, I felt confident about making the purchase, then I got spooked about potential looming changeover to USB-C and whatever else, but now I'm thinking about how little (practically never) I ever thought about all of the advancements that came out after I bought this MBP in 2010, so I wonder how much I'd actually be bothered by my new iMac being leapfrogged by tweaks to the system next year, for instance. In the end, I don't see how or why I couldn't happily get 4-5 years out of one of today's models, just as I have my MBP.

At this point, I don't even know if I'm making sense anymore. :)

I may be wrong, but even with TB3, an external spinner for storage is still hamstrung by the read/write speeds of the spinning drive...

Thank you.

Do you mean that the slowest part of data transfer is going to be the drvie speed itself, rather than the interface i.e. a file accessed from an the mechanical part of an internal fusion drive will be accessed at the same speed as that coming from an external mechanical drive.

That's the last thing I'm trying to confirm before I go all SSD.

You are making sense and to many of us, this is mostly an emotional decision. Reality is most of us would probably be fine with last years model for a couple more years. Kind of the same way it is with new cars. As far as future proof... there is absolutely no such thing. Unfortunately obsolescence is like death. We are all on the path to it, but some will reach there quicker than others.

I'm also in the back-and-forth boat! It's not about specs, I'd be perfectly happy with the refresh that came out today. For me, it's deciding if I REALLY need i7 or not, and it's a large purchase I wasn't planning on. I don't "need" a new computer, but man do I "want" one. Take $2500 out of my savings account? Charge it on a card? I definitely have the first world problem of having money... It's nice to have money but I hate spending money lol.

I have been waiting for an iMac more than 6 months and yesterday I said to myself "I'll buy one if they update tomorrow, unless they completely mess it up". Guess what they did...

I'm a loyal fan and have been for many years. I've had several MBP, one mini, several routers and a couple of iPod/iPhone.
But now I'm aching for a stationary computer and as soon as I'm finished writing this post I'll go to google to learn about hackingtosh. Apple has tried to f*** me over one time to many.

Here's only a few of the messed up stuff about the new iMac. Please realize that this are my opinions, you will probably feel different and we should both accept that.
  • GPUs are a joke - not even an option for a dedicated on the 21". C'mon.
  • No target mode - This is actually one of the biggest dealbreaker for me. This is only greed Apple, get your **** together.
  • The 1 TB fusiondrive now only has 24Gb SSD instead of 128. Greed, only greed.
  • To update the low-end 27" to an 500Gb SSD costs 430 USD more than a Samsung evo 500Gb in my closest store. I feel sick.
  • No backlit keyboard - even with that price...

The list goes on...

It's like someone at the Apple office made a bet:
"Hey, Tim!
Wanna bet if out customers truly are iSheeps or not?"

Anyway, I'm of to google now. If I don't like what I see then I'll guess that I'll be desktopless for another year (surely they will refresh next october? Maybe even in spring if we "vote with our wallets")

Edit: Anyway, maybe I'll come to my senses after a few days. But I almost wish that I don't.

I'm still new to the Mac world, but I can agree with the GPU options. Even the 27" is a let down. I know using mobile GPU saves space, but come on! I think the Fusion drive is a way to guide people into the SSD world. It's 2015, spinning drives should have gone away 5 years ago. I've not had an spinning HDD in any of my machines in over 3 years. Maybe I'm not a fully-fledged Apple Fanboy yet, but I really don't see the appeal of Target Mode Display. I get that it would be a nice thing to have, but don't see how it's a deal breaker.

Of course, I respect what you're saying. I have the same complaints from the Microsoft side of the fence. No company will ever build a computer that everyone will be happy with. :)

The reason I want my iMac to be able to act as an stand alone display is because I'm a sucker for product longevity.
One day the iMac will be so old that the components feel like it's from the stone age, or some of the internals will die. Then I'll be able to still use the display by buying an mac mini (or something). The 4K/5K display is so good that I think a regular user gladly could use for many, many years.

That is, if the display can live this ling.

Using mobile GPUs doesn't bother me much - it's more that they have to use the right mobile GPUs. These ones feel... not that great, but I guess I'll have to wait for some GPU reviews.

My main issues with this release are
1. Still 5400 RPM drives as default. Should either be 256GB SSD or 1TB Fusion.
2. At these prices, 16GB RAM should be default - otherwise lower price if they want to provide 8GB option.
3. DDR4 RAM missing?
4. Thunderbolt 3 missing?
5. USB-C missing?

lmao - Umm, tons of "professionals" in here.
If you care about the $3k-$4k you're plunking down here, you'd want TB3/USB-C for longevity.

Funny how Apple is "forward looking" when the rMB has USB-C, but when the new iMac update doesn't have it....suddenly "nobody needs it". They could have at least thrown in 1 USB-C port but instead they are milking the absolute most out of existing tooling & parts.

Apple is just being Apple - It's a pretty "meh" update and they know it.
They know it enough to move the ipad pro to the September event. Imagine announcing the iPad Pro with 32gb of storage and then 4k imac with a 5400rpm monstrousity. They would be booed off the stage. So they played their cards wisely.

A hackintosh is the way to go if you do not value your time at all. I hope you come to your senses.

I suspect all that ask, "Is an SSD better than a Fusion?" are also breathlessly waiting for the next iteration of the buggy whip.

You know there is a lot of people that always bring up how greedy Apple is blah blah blah. I don't usually pay too much attention to that. But when Apples offers a 4K display computer with a 5400 rpm HDD as an option with their top model it really make me question their motives.

I mean that is just conflicting hardware for even mild lifting. I'm not saying it should be cheaper I'm saying it shouldn't even be an option at all.

Couldn't disagree more - Been running a Hack for 4 years now (built 2 of them in that time) and if you do it correctly (use components others have used & tested) it's a wonderful world of options.

The very best part for me is that you can use new GPUs (for instance, I'm running a 980Ti).

I'd be happy to have a "legit Mac" (beyond a laptop I have here) but they never offer enough good options. The Mac Pro was exciting and is now getting lapped like a car with a blown tire unless you actually need the mega core crunching. Sad.

Wow, yesterday I was all set to buy. Today I can't decide. I want out of the Fusion ( own a late 2012 iMac ) but the 1TB SSD is too expensive here in Canada. The BTO model I want is $5265 taxes in with my wife's education discount.
Why buy a high end machine with a small SDD and need HDDs sitting in back of it? The 3TB price would be a go if it was a 1TB SSD.
First year without a new iPhone and now probably passing on an unspectacular iMac update.

SSD prices actually dropped this refresh. I have the same iMac from 2012 and adding a 1TB SSD now costs $700, down from $800.

Damn, $5265, after discounts? Insane lol:eek: Are you adding RAM or something to your BTO?

Only because the standard drive is a 2tb fusion drive vs a 1tb fusion. So it cost 700 dollars PLUS the price of a 2tb fusion drive. One could make the argument that the 1tb SSD is more expensive.

EDIT: Actually it's not an argument it's fact. The middle model comes stock with a 1tb fusion drive like last year on release. The 1tb SSD is a 900 dollar option on that model.

That's the last thing I'm trying to confirm before I go all SSD.

I think your confusing 'fusion drive' mechanics and 'external drive' mechanics. Hope this clarifies for you:

FOR EXTERNAL DRIVES:
You could have a thunderbolt with virtually unlimited transfer capability. It would offer you no real performance increases over a slower medium like USB2. Even the best traditional consumer hard drives only read/write around 150Mb/s. And thats if your lucky. So if your goal is to load all your media files on an external spinning hard drive, TB3 is of no concern. Even a TB spinning hard drive is a waste of money imo, as you cannot take advantage of the fast transfer speeds.

FUSION DRIVE:
This is a whole different story. As you have probably already read, the fusion drive is a software merging of two separate drives (the 128GB SSD and 1/2/3TB hard drive). The operating system as well as the most commonly accessed files are stored on the SSD, and the rest on the hard drive. OS X manages all of this in the background. Fusion drives are an excellent compromise for the average user. Massive storage, quick access to most programs, and a great price point. I bootcamp windows, so for me it is worth the money to upgrade to the 512GB SSD.

Ha. You guys were right about it being Tuesday. But I am a bit let down. No mac Mini update and the 27" iMac updates not using the latest and greatest tech. it proves that Apple is really not a computer company for geeks who like cutting edge stuff, but more of a consumer goods company. No wonder they dropped "Computer" from their name. But this is nothing new. Everybody computer geek know this. I guess I'll get PC hardware and maybe build a Hackintosh.

Wow, i just realized that now too. I stand corrected. That's pretty....terrible

Instead of pursuing longevity, some of you might want to consider buy/sell. For example, I buy a fully loaded device, work it hard, and sell it for around $2000 when I want a new one.

So each time I want to upgrade it costs me around $1000, sounds like a lot, but it's the same price as a 6s+.

I have the same mentality with the iPhone. I can recoup a little more than half the full price of the iPhone each year by selling my previous year model.

You got that right! And Apple got it dead wrong.
