If this is simply a 'refresh', that damn ODD will stay. If it's a redesign, I hope they remove it. At this point, no one knows what Apple will do. Not a single damn leak.

I hope they axe the Disc drive. Such a waste of space.

Yes, get rid of hardware that might be useful to some people, but don't cut the price for doing so Apple. What's important to us consumers is less utility & functionality and lower per-unit production costs for you. Apple profits are paramount. They must be maximized even at our own out-of-pocket expense. Maybe raise the price a few more hundred just so that we can gripe about the price increase and then stand in line to pay it anyway?

Now, once you take out that superdrive, if you can make the desktop device that "I" never carry anywhere a bit thinner, that benefit(?) (thinness) has also become massively important to us consumers. I stand around often bragging to my PC friends how my desktop is a bit thinner than theirs. They hate that and it makes me feel so good. After all, a slightly thinner desktop has huge utility in my day-to-day use of it. I can always make highly productive use of a few more millimeters of freed-up airspace above my desk.

While you're at it, could you also go to the trouble of engineering in a few more proprietary connectors (like that internal hard drive connector in the prior generation) and further reduce the options for connecting other hardware so that we can buy overpriced adapters and service only from you? You have that new thunderbolt-to-ethernet adapter, so why include an ethernet port in this iMac? You have that new thunderbolt-to-firewire connector, so why include firewire in this new iMac? Really Apple, we don't mind paying more for a bunch of accessories to make our existing stuff work rather than you continuing to build compatibility for stuff like ethernet and firewire right in.

I can hardly wait!

 (and I do own an iMac myself)

I would hate it if Apple dropped the Optical Drive.
*Yes, I know I am in a minority here*

as a designer I still save things to a CD/DVD. I get artwork from people and photographers on DVD.

Yes Some places allow for FTP upload/download or via internet/website. but not all. When I make a movie and want to show someone I create a DVD and easy to watch anywhere. my Father-in-law does not have a computer/the internet and still wants to see a video of his grandson...DVD. easy
oh and the DVD we get with photos and video of the sonogram and all the other photos on DVD from the Dr's will be much easier to access with an Optical Drive.

But all that said I clearly see the day when Apple will dissolve it and think that is fine.

**Bought parents a Mac Mini for CHristmas last year and within a month needed to buy them an external DVD Drive...it looks really ugly now but they had software they just got that needed an optical drive**

After many Apple products incl. iMacs I am wondering why people still want a desktop (MacPro and it's expandability aside)

The current generation of laptops seems so powerful and if you hook up a display and a keyboard, plus track pad it is very versatile and you don't need to be at any desk.

Wonder no more:

27" entry imac (2.7Ghz Quad i5, 1TB): 1699

13" mbp (2.5Ghz Dual i5, 500Gb): 1199
27" TB display: 999

Total: 2198

2 less cores, less HD, no external kb or mouse, big difference on graphics and 400$ more! And I didn't even try to maximize the difference.

******* you, clown. "Old folks". We're the people who actually use our machines for work, not online games. Get out of your mothers basement and experience the larger world.

Nothing there is "helpful" just different
1. Thinner- it's a freaking DESKTOP. iMac is thin enough now.
2. more space for other components. Really? what would you like?
3. User -replaceable SSD/HDD. WTF is the matter with you. Apple would not make it user-replaceable if they could help it. and who really wants to spend the money for this very expensive per/TB tech
4. Lower price point - Lke that's really going to happen
5. Weight - how often do you carry your iMac (if you own one) around? What, that couple of ounces too much for you?

Woah, chill out, Grandpa. I don't use my iMac for "online games".

1. And? It could be thinner.
2. As I said, like other people do, they replace the stupid OD drive for another Storage drive.
3. See above. It's not expensive. Maybe back in your day $100 for 2TB was expensive, but it's not anymore.
4. Could. See Macbook Air (wait, no disc drive, you probably would never look at it)
5. Weight is for Apples sake. Less weight = cheaper to ship to stores.

So much anger in you.

Nothing comes on discs anymore.

LOTS of stuff comes on discs nowadays.
get with the times.

;)

but seriously, they do and what about those Digital Downloads you get with movies that "for some reason" require the disc to be inserted. (seems it could just as easily download from iTunes since it links it there anyway)

Drive might be a waste of space for some but for others it's important.
The floppy was important for a lot of people too. But they bought external floppy readers while the rest of the world shed (and shunned) the floppy drive.

It's like this... whenever I buy an external hard drive and it comes with 6 differents cables to work with whatever system I have, I am conflicted. Yes, I am glad that I didn't have to go buy a cable, BUT, I also feel like it's such a waste that 5 cables won't be used. Same with the SuperDrive... I feel like it would be better for Apple to offer a better unit that is thinner and runs cooler leaving out the drive. Let those that need it, buy it. Personally, I would have to buy one but at least I understand the need to drop it if they deemed it time to. Not a lot of people use them. Or it's months in between.

Most Blu-rays now come with codes you enter online.

The 'disc based codes' should be gone by the end of the year (except Disney). Every major studio (except Disney) is supporting Ultra Violet.

Holy crap. I only read a couple of responses to this, but jeezus! Grandparents complaining about the loss of the 8 track players and in a thread about the iMac of all things as if it's something special.

I just came here to once again say: WTF APPLE???!!! WHERE'S THE MAC PRO UPDATES YOU ****ING TARDS?

and...I'm done. Carry on.

They need their clip art! How else will people stumble upon their GeoCities website? :p

I still need to have a disc insert on many digital downloads...bugs me, i can easily grab it via iTunes anyway.

with floppies there was another physical drive/disc to replace: CDs/DVDs.

sure there are thumbdrives but they aren't as prevalent and used everywhere.

again, understand Apple Will remove it...not happy about that idea.

Damn. She must be well gutted that she wont have that new Ivy Bridge goodness powering her facebook experience.

She has 30 days to go exchange it for the new one, full price return, and they will move her files to the new one free as well.

I suppose Apple will keep with the ricauculous custom hard drive found in the current iMac? This is the whole reason my OS X now wakes up to Z77x-UP5 TH in the morning.

I can't see them dropping the optical drive, yes.. people are moving towards digital downloads more and more but a lot of stuff still comes on discs. Call me old fashioned but I prefer actual physical media.

Are you sure it's not 14 days?
I thought it was 30 for an iPhone and 14 for everything else.

Edited:
Disregard. I think that is for returns, not exchanges.

Um...we put all our discs to drives and just archived the discs in a book sleeve. We haven't used a CD/DVD in literally 3+ years. Nothing comes on discs anymore.

And I work in graphics/motion graphics at a post house. So we probably have more stock discs then you do.

So who is being selfish here? Just get with the times. ODDs are archaic.

Um... yes, think I made it clear it can be done. EULA on those disc probably prohibits your storing that data (from the discs) on another "retrieval" system (just sayin').

You're also talking business where I'm sure you don't lay out the cost.

Yes, could easily by high capacity drives, but that requires at least 2 for back-up.
Back up to the cloud? Please find me huge storage at HD prices and arrange for my provider to not strangle my data pipeline AND please prove their long-term reliability. I'm still quite leery.

Give it a few more years when you can get worthwhile amounts of cloud storage for a reasonable price AND your service providers wont strangle you for using so much bandwidth.

EDIT: One more thing here. As to using external HDs or OODs. Think the whole point of the sleek, all-in-one iMac is to try to avoid all that clutter.

Most likely another "silent update" on the store than it being showed at the iPhone 5 keynote, we will see..

That's what everyone said about the MacBooks. If its just a refresh of the internals then probably just a website update but if there's a redesign I could see them talking about it at their next keynote.

5 releases?

Both happy and sad w/ potential new imac news. I am sad because I have 2011 27 inch imac.. I keep telling myself that it won't have retina but thinner bezel and all around(possibly get bigger? 30 inch?... ) I think other than new retina, I think I can live w/ 2011 27 inch..

I am happy because I love imac in general.. they are the best work horse device apple is offering(not to mention it's stability!!!! and HUGE work space).
I currently have mba 2012 13 8 gig and other pc laptop but I alwlays find myself doing all the heavy lifting w/ imac .. LOVE IT..

5 releases?

#clingstofutilehopeoflogicalproductnaming

I honestly think this is what the 5 is referring to. It just makes a lot of sense, especially since they dropped the naming of the iPads with the new iPad this year. Now there are 8 big things that they will be talking about towards the end of this year (if rumors are to be believed) they are:
-iPhone
-iPod touch
-iPod nano
-iMac
-iTunes
-iOS 6
-iPad mini
-13" retina MBP

I see them splitting these between this event in September and this rumored October iPad mini release.

I think the retina MBP and iPad mini will be spoken about in October. Next week I think we will for sure hear about iOS 6, iPhones, iMacs.
That leaves the iPod touch, nano and iTunes unallocated.

Maybe the new iTunes isn't ready to be released yet so maybe they'll mention the iPods this week and iTunes with the iPad mini? Honestly can't wait until Weds because thinking of scenarios is getting me really excited

Correct. Which is why most of us don't like them as a 'professional' machine because you can't upgrade the GPU. Now if they made an official external GPU slot that you could plug in a new GPU card, then I'd be a lot happier.

Meanwhile HP has the Z1 which is the ideal machine for an all-in-one.

http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaigns/workstations/z1_features.html

This is what most of us want the iMac to be...

I hate that I can't clean the insides of my iMac of dust so I love that the z1 opens up like that, however the price difference to the 27" iMac is significant, considering the lower priced models of the Z1 uses integrated graphics - Intel HD Graphics 2000, or the Intel HD P3000 which is a separate card but not particularly a strong performer. And it obviously won't take mainstream GPU cards.

For the iMac there are PCIe expansion over thunderbolt solutions out there like this one:
http://www.magma.com/thunderbolt/

Pretty expansive either case.
