There is no way that is possible. The 2600 isn't even in the same class as the 8800. Its designed as a replacement/competitor to the 7300 and an 8600 in pc. The 8800 even beats the 1900 by like 80%. Unless there is a HUGE driver issue with the 8800 or pro aps are ridiculously lopsided then its not possible.

yea the driver isnt utilized as well as the hd 2600, just wait until 10.5.3 or another graphics driver update.;)

I think the 2600 is gonna be our replacement. When the 9XXX NVIDIA comes out I hope it will be the answer we are all looking for. That's if NVIDIA and/or Apple want's to share with the rest of us.

When the Apple account rep who handles my school district told me that she wasn't sure what the offering would be, but that I should stay tuned, I kind of pictured that meaning that we might not get the 8800GT but something else. This is total speculation, but it would be nice if they surprised us with something better than the 8800GT. Hey, a pig just flew by my window!

Sounds like she has no clue. "Stay tuned" usually means hang in there for the long haul for something thats not gonna happen.

LMAO!!!!!!!!!!

Say I buy a PC version 8800GT card and use it in bootcamp for the next few weeks / months* then apple releases the backwards compatible 8800GT, can I flash the ROM off the apple card onto the PC version to make it work in OS X?

Ach, bugger it. I'm going to buy a Radeon 3870x2 and leave the x1900 in there also.

Is it at all possible to still boot into OS X with the ATI 3870x2 on a first generation mac pro while using a 7300 for OS X and the ATI in Windows?

Also, are there any PC cards that allow this kind of setup? All this would require is a simple KVM switch, or, switching the inputs on an LCD monitor (some support more than one input, which is the reason why ill be needing a better video card since im buying a bigger monitor....)

I think if you want to boot to osx, you would have to connect the monitor dvi to the 7300gt.

jjahshik32,

Being that you already have a Mac Pro Quad 2.8ghz 8 Core/16gb RAM/150gb 10K Raptor/3TB/8800GT/23"ACD. How does it preform? Did u use to have an older Mac Pro/x1900. I'm ready to end all the crap and just buy a new one. Faster FSB,RAM, better memory management, better 64 bit support, the list goes on, personally don't care for this offer from DV Warehouse for my:

Great Card

This Card Runs really nice in 2008 Mac Pro. I have 2 of these cards installed and have the SLI ribbon connecting them. OS 10.5.2…Read more runs Battlefield 2142 uses both cards in 10.5.2. They are running as one card in my Winders Vister Ultimate 64. I bought a third card just to try in my 2007 8 core Mac Pro. Did not work. I tried the PCIe utility in system/library/core service/ expansion slot utility. Nothing worked. And yes I tried it with my ATI x1900xt and put the 8800GT in slot one and the ATI in slot three. Booted to winders with a card on the nvidia and still nothing. My poor 8 Core from 2007 won't work with this card installed. Happy Gaming.

How does someone so foolish get so much money...

He must be a male prostitute...........I surely don't have money like that to throw-away on a test. Bozo's like that should post their findings on the bottom of the Goodyear Blimp !!!!!!

haha he bought 2 cards for nothing. SLI isnt' supported.

Well, he seems to be saying that he has sli up and running on his 2008 Mac Pro but the 2008 card will not work at all in his 2007 Mac Pro. I have no idea if 2008 mac pro suports sli but I am surprised he could not get the 8800 working in the 2007 as it is reported to work in bootcamp. So he did not apparently waste 3 cards as he can reportedly use 2 of them. The third does seem like a waste since he could have experimented with one of his two existing cards without buying a new one...which makes me doubt the veracity of this.

Just back to this topic. Is there any way for me to put a decent graphics card in my Mac Pro (no - the 2600 and 1900 do not count as decent cards in 2008)? That doesnt involve opening the panel or unplugging a video cable everytime I reboot into OSX? Has anyone tried the 3870 in osx? Is there such a thing as external video cable switcher that can sit on my desk that will allow me to switch video inputs from two graphics cards? That seems to be the best workaround.

Wow, thats a cool switching device. The only problem is there is just one double-wide slot in our "not so old" macs. Am I to understand that the guy with 3 cards, and money, has two double wide slots in his new Mac Pro? I wouldn't have a problem with the video switcher providing I could have 2 high performance cards installed.

Upgrading old Mac Pro to 8800 GT graphics

Just over at apple.com and the NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Graphics Upgrade Kit... is now shiping within 24 hours so i guess they have a steady supply now so with any luck they fix this problem
