The 1st Amendment has nothing to do with the US government‘s realm of national security, which is one of the few things the government exists for in the Constitution. Your freedom of speech is not impeded by the removal of an app, especially when Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. all still exist. What would compel Apple/Google to comply is the government’s ability to fine them into the ground, or even seize infrastructure for endangering national security. As for people’s phones, the app would be removed remotely.

Apples and Oranges.

Wait, why am I arguing with a CCP bot?

It absolutely does. The 1A doesn’t just protect speech, it also protects expression. The government forcing a company to remove a product from their store, as well as deleting apps already on Americans’ phones, very clearly curtails expression (and speech, actually). One could also make a 5A takings argument, whereby the gov’t forcing the removal of an app from your phone is an unconstitutional seizure of property.

But I’m not really interested in your guess about the government’s justifications, I want journalists to actually press the people in power over these things instead of just regurgitating their words.

I know, Donald loves being a dictator and admires China. Why doesn't he just ban everything that isnt' American and you can have your own Intranet too. Hell the rest of the world wouldn't miss you either!
There are days I wouldn’t miss us either 😁😉. Seriously, though, we will pull through again. It may not be pretty but one way or another we have to take this step and we will move forward to a more socially just country. This is actually the hardest step, though, because it will be changing hearts and minds not laws.

LOL!!! You fail to understand how rules are easily broken and mean nothing to people in power. Wars are never won with words. Good for the USA I say, took them long enough.

Still waiting for any forensic proof that shows there is a thread to national security by chinese apps or any app for that matter.
I can tell that you are a programmer because you had the word “thread” instead of “thread” 😁👍

Well, i guess Trump knows what's best for the U.S??

Why do we need to relate history, with whats always going to happen? What if Microsoft got TikTok and there was no Chinese spying ? We just look at the other side and block the doors (..probably brick it as well to make sure)

China may have a history, but let companies use what they what and figure that out for themselves, rather than an 'overlorded Trump' flies in to save the day.. for everyone.

uhhh...isn't this akin to banning books and media? its very hypocritical to let Facebook and Google gather all the data they want but ban TikTok. This is literally thought control and the west has made huge mockery of China for banning Google apps and now the US is dong the exact same. Whats happening is US is turning into China policy wise.

If US don't want data collection on their citizens they can ban data-collection outright by the rule of law or give a warning to people that this app does collect data and spy on you...like all the warning on all products out there including medicine and its side effects.

Please, enlighten me.
Lol.
You are legitimately practicing hysterics with all of your ridiculous exaggeration, misuse of the word rape, etc.
You are definitely not in a place where enlightenment is viable.

If you can’t understand why a complete ban on anything tech related whatsoever that was created in China is a horrible idea & would deeply punish the American people, then I guess your xenophobia has broken your brain!
You think only in America are good ideas born?
You think no creativity exists in China?
You think nobody ever has or ever will, in China, create something we can all benefit from?

That view is the opposite of enlightenment. Get right with yourself.

This is coming from the Trump administration. Trump is looking up to certain people and that's where he gets his ideas. Everyone knows how well it worked out for Trumps idols:

You're spot on. In a dictatorship, censoring and banning is not surprising. But for a democracy this shouldn't happen. So a rule of law would be in order. No app can collect data, period. Of course they don't want that, because they need to access peoples data and are spying on everyone else. The problem with the data in China is, they can't access it. That's why they give Google, Facebook & Co. a free pass.

When will the US get what's coming to them?
Shouldn't be too long I guess. Ever since Trump moved into the White House, the whole world thinks the US is a total joke and a country full of idiots, run by the biggest moron in history. The US' failure when it comes to the pandemic is just the beginning. It's not over yet, it will get worse. The economy will suffer and so will US residents. The dollar will drop in value. The truth is, the world doesn't need the US, it's fine without it. The US is the world police, bombing a few countries here and there to suggest they're needed in the world. Now the government is trying to dictate what tech companies can or can not do. Wonder how far this will go and how the companies react. Maybe, just maybe, Apple & Co. should consider moving their businesses out of the US altogether (next stop Canada, Europe, etc.). Not an easy thing to do, but may be worth it in the long run if this continues.

WTO for one

You're a social backward mess, about 50 years less developed than the rest of the west. We laugh at you constantly. And to think at one point Americans were something to look up to, world leaders, inspirational. Now it's a pitiful mess, "son".
