art of following a conversation.
That's the art of debate. You should never treat it as a conversation. You talk your points, they talk their points, no one follows each other.

Have you ever interviewed a politician or a company PR person?

All vehicles can benefit from using synthetic engine oils and all drivers should consider switching to synthetic oils. Synthetics cost twice as much, but they will extend the life of your engine's components.

How else is the U.S. going to get their hands on China's AI technology?
It‘s just the data they want. A poor AI with tons of data can be better than an excellent AI with little data. But given that the US is cutting research budget (hello COVID-19) for actual science all the time, they just want things for free as it seems.

Unless the spying on American citizens is being carried out by its own government. ;)
Don’t worry, the US is spying on everyone. Snowden seems so long ago and the Cisco not so randomly generating random bits generator to make it easier for the NSA to access systems is forgotten as well.

2) There is a huge amount of data gathered and collected by normal use of such apps - in exactly the same way that I'm adding to Mac Rumours' data right now with this post.
Spot on, there is however nothing in that data that is a problem for national security.

China is constantly forcing apps off the Chinese AppStore, why shouldn’t any other county be able to do the same?
Simple, China is a dictatorship in the end, the US claims to be the holy grail of the world when it comes to freedom and democracy. Reality is, the US isn’t any better than China, Russia or North Korea when it comes to these things.

It was created in a lab in Wuhan.
Oh please, not this idiotic nonsense again. It’s been proven by experts all over the world that it’s not made in a lab, but the origin is natural. I’ve worked with some samples for Wuhan myself, absolutely nothing in there that suggests otherwise. If you think otherwise, please provide proof. Scientific proof and not some nonsense propaganda media/blog entry.

Maybe we should close these threads to everyone except those who have a PhD in a relevant field. Would be nice to have threads every once in a while with only people who can think, leaving out the anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers and those abducted and butt-probed by aliens conspiracy theorists.

Even having a PhD doesn't matter, unless your professional opinions conform to the thought police. Twitter and Facebook were banning MD's talking about COVID treatments because the social media companies disagreed with what they were saying.

I do have a STEM background, but I only keep a car until its bumper-to-bumper manufacture insurance and maintenance package runs out, so I don't know anything about changing oils or car maintenance.

Yeah. And we will see Zdrumpf be hit by the Wuhan bio weapon and pass away during the election, all while his nation is torn apart in a civil war over statues and symbols of the past. The paradigm shift is here, your time is over! 👹

His name is Trump.

The orbits of planets around the sun are not fixed. The planets masses affect each other and their orbits change over time.

What is this oil thing you people are talking about? I did a search for supercharger and oil, but nothing comes up.
:p

It's called snake oil, or getting completely off topic.

Speaking of non-sequiturs, you're pretty good at that as well with your assassination and totalitarian revolution threats in a thread about phone apps.

England copied Holland, America copied England, and now China copies America. So what? This is how these things go.

War can be fought on several fronts other than with tanks and boats, in this case IP & economics are one form of albeit cheaper non-conventional warfare. Denying that fact is foolish.

I love it when politicians try to make laws about stuff they have no idea how it works.

I’ve read a ton of stories about this, and not once has anyone explained HOW the government plans on doing this. How exactly can the US “ban” an app? Millions of people already have TikTok on their phones—what happens to them?

Some of these journalists really need to do their job and actually press these people about their plans. And I’d love to see that fat moron Pompeo try to explain anything about technology.

1) US Government bans the app.

2) US Gov’t sends notice to Apple/Google ordering removal of said app

3) Apple/Google remove said app from their respective App stores

Done.

Have you ever even been in China? Or, more specifically within the last 5 years? As the OP points out, WeChat *is* pretty much a necessity there, since it's pervasively used to pay for stuff. The Chinese use WeChat like we use credit cards - except even more so. People look at you funny if you try to pay with cash. I remember going into a department store there last year and wanting to pay for the item with cash. Took the clerk 15 minutes to find cash to give me change!

And this is a good thing? Is it convenient? Yes. Is it scary from a government control/privacy standpoint? Absolutely.

But under what authority? That's a clear 1st Amendment violation. And what would compel Apple and/or Google to comply? Also, what happens to the millions of instances of the app already on Americans' phones?

The 1st Amendment has nothing to do with the US government‘s realm of national security, which is one of the few things the government exists for in the Constitution. Your freedom of speech is not impeded by the removal of an app, especially when Facebook, Reddit, Twitter, Whatsapp, etc. all still exist. What would compel Apple/Google to comply is the government’s ability to fine them into the ground, or even seize infrastructure for endangering national security. As for people’s phones, the app would be removed remotely.

I wouldn't be opposed to this idea for the right reasons (protecting user data privacy), but in that case these rules need to be applied to European and American companies as well.

I am opposed to this as a trade war tactic.
We ware well beyond trade wars at this point. More like cold war
