What are the pro's and con's of phone-to-phone (Migration) versus encrypted backup on a Mac?Last year i did end up using iCloud restore after trying both phone to phone and encrypted backup on Mac restore.
One advantage to iCloud restore if you can start using the phone as it downloads apps, while it appeared the other restores had to finish before the phone would be in a useable state. My schedule that day did not have enough time for me to let it finish the restores with cables and i kept having to leave the house before it’d completed.
I plan, haha, to not interrupt it this year. lol You know what they say about plans.
Yes, as a "professional" airline passenger, about 2 million miles including many roundtrips to Australia and China, I really enjoy watching and tracking flights.
It was really fun to get my iPhone Xs Max on launch day in 2018, it flew out of HKG to ANC to SFD to CVG. Very important getting the phone delivery to fit my schedule that year as a few days later I flew to HKG and any delay would have meant traveling with my older phone. Having tracked the phone all the way to the US, I noted we flew the reverse path of my phone's journey to me just days earlier.
During tracking I had enjoyed watching the iPhone flights approaches into ANC, and on my return we flew just to the south of ANC. I was able to see the Northern Lights while watching the UPS flights below as they crossed the mountains and dropped over the Cook Inlet to land on 7R. It was fun to know the exact path the cargo planes were taking as I'd watched them so carefully while we were all tracking flights trying to figure out which one our phones were on by departure and arrival scans. And like our phones, I slept the whole way across Canada. lol
So sorry everyone didn't get to enjoy this year's tracking with that long pair of flights from Asia to Louisville. Most people had no idea how long it'd take, and that actually it was a very short 14 hours to get that phone 7000 miles to Louisville!
I had wondered how the tracking would be different this year, but no idea it'd be this different. Apparently the phones don't get assigned and labeled to individuals in China like in previous years. Apparently Apple now splits and labels them once they arrive in the US, like the carriers. That doesn't have to be done a week in advance to show up in UPS app way before delivery. Those labels can be created "last minute" and shipped to "easily" arrive on launch day, maybe routinely is a better word that easily.
iPhones are coming soon, get your backup strategies ready.

My ISPU devices have said "Processing" for some time now, no where to go as the next step is "Ready for Pickup" and that won't happen until it's ready to pickup. lol That'll be Friday if you have a 9/19 appointment. I don't know when it flips on Friday, maybe all at 5am, or maybe all half an hour before appt time? We'll find out soon. This is my first time every doing in-store pickup.
For those going to the store Friday, have you seen any change from the Processing status? I guess it would make sense that there isn't much movement since it's not being shipped to us. Just curioius.....
Welcome and good luck!I'm coming from android, so I'm watching and reading all the things about switching platforms. I'm so afraid of losing texts. I'm sure it's not as complicated as I've made it in my mind.
Not matter what device I'm setting up as new or with a Migration, 1Password is the first app I open and log in. I can't imagine how I'd be able to use internet and accounts without it!I use migration and I have all passwords in 1Password (also MFA is in there) and have never had an issue.
Your comment doesn’t make sense. I’m sorry, but the system doesn’t know whether you already have a tracking number or not. What are you talking about? Only the user would know that.Let's be clear about this. It doesn't matter how someone tracks by reference if they already have a tracking number. Once you have a tracking number I believe you can track by reference using your entire order number. We cannot do that if we don't have a tracking number. And the old methods of entering the order number minus that last 2 digits or phone number minus the last 2 digits don't work either.
I think what they're trying to point out is that users trying to find their orders by reference before they show up in MyChoice will be unsuccessful. Some seem to think you'll be able to find it by reference before it's even in the system.Your comment doesn’t make sense. I think with the India and China manufacturing, and the ever changing tariff "announcements", it appears Apple had to do things differently. lol "Think different", get it? lolI wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't some sort of requirement to ship them as a shipment to Apple, rather than individuals, so that they can be classified as bulk mobile phone import under current tariff laws. There's no tariffs for phones, so to make sure that they don't get hit with anything, they are just being extra cautious and having them completely bulk shipped and sorted inside the border. This is not a political reply - just a potential observation around our current facts.
Now this makes sense. But saying that it won’t work just because the user doesn’t have a full tracking number isn’t the right way to put it.I think what they're trying to point out is that users trying to find their orders by reference before they show up in MyChoice will be unsuccessful. Some seem to think you'll be able to find it by reference before it's even in the system.
This stems from back in the day, before many people had MyChoice. If you don't have MyChoice, the only way to find the order before Apple sends you the tracking number is to search by reference. So reference works to find it before Apple exposes the tracking information to you (but after it's in the system), but reference isn't a magical thing that will find it before it's in the system at all (which is when it will show up in MyChoice).
So if it's not in MyChoice, a label probably hasn't been created yet. Unless there is something wrong with your MyChoice.
Here's how an Apple order # can be used to track. Now this makes sense. But saying that it won’t work just because the user doesn’t have a full tracking number isn’t the right way to put it.
For example, in my case, I recently moved, and my address might not match exactly with what I entered in UPS My Choice. That’s how I’d know. It could happen that it doesn’t appear in My Choice but does show up when tracking by reference.
^^^ THIS ^^^Planning on doing a iPhone to iPhone migration using a thunderbolt cable connecting the two devices. I’m hoping that that will be the fastest/easiest option to get things transferred as quickly as possible.
I find it better and faster for an encrypted backup or an iCloud restore. I’ve done all three options over the years, and iPhone to iPhone migration makes me re-sign in to fewer apps than any other option.
