...some long awaited rumors about the overdue Mac Pro and iMac updates. According to the site, Apple won't be releasing a new Mac Pro until "end of summer" with the iMac revision to follow a few weeks later.

I'm sorry, did I miss something - overdue iMac updates? It's only seven months since the last major overhaul, I'm sat with a new model 27" iMac, which is an incredibly machine in a configuration less than 8 months old - what overdue update?!

Very nice, then again I don't know why it says the iMac is long overdue for an update. The last update was in October and in all respect it was an amazing upgrade.
Few ever expected a Quad-Core upgrade.

If we see another decent update in September, that will be timely enough.

no blu-ray, no sale.

how can someone justify getting a 27 inch top of the line iMac and not able to legitimately buy and watch 1080P movies??

Because it's my work computer, not a home entertainment system and I have no desire to watch a two hour movie on a display 12" from my face...

Could care less about watching HDCP BR content on my Mac. I just want real BluRay options and full authoring implementation in DVDSP.

Rip it on what? Kind of a catch-22, eh? I think Steve said something to the effect that Blu-Ray would quickly be replaced by HD downloads so there was no need.

Hrm?

You can use external Blu-Ray drives on Mac OS X. Not for watching movies though. Most people use it for burning Blu-Ray data discs (Toast Titanium lets you for one).

And I presume by treating movie discs like data discs, you can rip them - specifically with MakeMKV - http://www.makemkv.com/download/

Yay! Yet again a new FireWire port that is incompatible with everything!

I want Apple to bring back FireWire 400: Digital medium format cameras, pro camcorders and tape decks all use 400. Having to use an expensive adapter for everything is a pain, and finding out that your entire university is filled with macs but you can't download the pictures from the medium format camera because you forgot your freaking adapter at home makes me really angry!

What adapter, all FireWire is backward compatible, bring your f.cking cable along, you can't except the uni to provide you with a cable too.

Can't we get something posted JUST ****ING ONCE about this iPhone antenna thing I heard someone mention?

Hehe.

There'd better be a matte, anti-glare screen for the numerous people that need them - see the growing petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com

Steve needs to realise that some people actually use Macs for work, not for play, and some workers are in lighting conditions in which a glossy screen creates havoc. Other such as some graphic designers and some photographers need matte screens for the way they work their crafts.

The petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com has 1000+ people, many of whom took time to give detailed explanations why they need matte screens. All admit that glossy has nicer pop colors etc, but they need matte screens because of their work. Many suffer from headaches and eyestrain too.

Not saying everyone needs or prefers matte, but many do.

Why does Apple force the glossy screen down our throat?

BTW, the petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com could do with more petitions.

No, that greedy, power-hungry, power-abusing, petty, vindictive, hypocritical old miser Steve Jobs is the whole world of hurt.

With Blu-ray drives: 0% goes to Apple

Without Blu-ray drives: forced to buy 720 (!!!!) media from the infamous WalledGarden vending machine known as iTunes (nickled and dimed to death, to which El Capitano Senor Jobs says where you can and can't use it), to which Apple gets XX% receives.

Meanwhile, is old Steve-O gonna pay for my additional data usage to downloand a frickin' 720 (!!!) media? Thought not.

"Hey, I got this great movie I wanna share w/ you. Here's my Mac Pro or iMac. Just borrow it and return it when you're done w/ it. Just make sure you lift w/ your back."

Makes no sense, because after all bluray is a bag of hurt.

I've always wondered how people in the graphic art fields can use the iMac when its color is supposedly significantly more inaccurate than a Mac Pro + NEC setup.

Mac Pro -> Internal bluray drive
iMac, Mac Mini, MBP, MB -> External bluray drive.

I rip all my blurays now and quality is more than enough to watch them on 27 inch screen.

A lot of graphic designers have built the beautiful yellow iMac tint into their Photoshop workflow. I don't think it's a coincidence i have seen a lot of yellow graphics, banners and web images since October of last year.

nice one!

I wonder if they'll keep FW 800? or maybe supply an adapter?

BTW, at the story, there is something missing in this sentece: "Firewire will not forgotten"... a be maybe?

Guess what is a bag of hurt!

I'm rip all my blurays now and quality is more than enough to watch them on 27 inch screen.

1.) How do you rip them?

2.) How many external HDDs have you got?

3.) What if people have 32, 37, 42" or even larger screens?

4.) What about sound? You lose the quality sound too with your time-consuming/HDD-wasting ripping exercise.

5.) What if people just can't be bothered to rip? The whole point of Blu Ray is that you put it in and you get quality sound with quality picture on a disc.

6.) AND YOU CALL BLU RAY A BAG OF HURT?! :D

+1000

The Mac Pro has been unbelievably overdue, especially considering it is supposed to be the top-performance line of Macs (thus needing more frequent updates to keep up).

I'm surprised Macrumors systematically downplays that. Guys, you have a huge critical mass and I'm sure today even Apple follows you closely. Please do bring up this oddity when you mention Mac Pros, and consider expressing your wonders (I'm sure you do) as to why the Mac Pro has been so neglected to become basically abandoned. It has jumped two releases, and it's nearly two years now. I'm sure many of the Macrumors community are all ears on this.
QFT.

Bluray is a bag of hurt. Done, finished, over the hill.

LightPeak may turn out to be the answer...

I'm glad that you finished, so you can move on. Although, I'm sceptical about whether you can...

It is really like talking to a wall, isn't it? You keep repeating that "Bluray is a bag of hurt" and you cannot process any arguments to the contrary.

What else did Jobs say that you defend more aggressively than anybody with basic intelligence, including him?
