If there are any truth to the rumors of Apple phasing out optical drives completely, they will never offer Blu-Ray. I can understand wanting it for data storage, but why are people so concerned about watching movies on their computers? Am I the only one who still owns a TV?

Really pleased to hear about Firewire, can't wait to see the audio devices that will be made for it.

So once the Mac pros and iMacs get the USB 3 it'll just be a matter of time before the mbps get it too. Nice:)
I'm looking at a mbp in the next year or so. I can't wait to see some audio creation devices using USB 3:D

I'm just glad to see a rumor about the Mac Pro. For a while it was gloomily quiet. It's probably less than two months away too.

Same here. We're almost at the end of the line. Just a little bit more...

I've always wondered how people in the graphic art fields can use the iMac when its color is supposedly significantly more inaccurate than a Mac Pro + NEC setup.

You calibrate your screen, as I have done. There is very, very little variance between my onscreen display and final print output. "Supposedly" is the keyword here - don't believe everything the pundits and stupid analysts state as 'fact'.

There'd better be a matte, anti-glare screen for the numerous people that need them - see the growing petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com

Steve needs to realise that some people actually use Macs for work, not for play, and some workers are in lighting conditions in which a glossy screen creates havoc. Other such as some graphic designers and some photographers need matte screens for the way they work their crafts.

The petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com has 1000+ people, many of whom took time to give detailed explanations why they need matte screens. All admit that glossy has nicer pop colors etc, but they need matte screens because of their work. Many suffer from headaches and eyestrain too.

Not saying everyone needs or prefers matte, but many do.

Why does Apple force the glossy screen down our throat?

BTW, the petition at http://macmatte.wordpress.com could do with more petitions.

A graphics professional should be working in a light controlled environment. If the glare is really that much of an issue for you, don't buy one. I'm sat in a studio with 9 27" iMac and there is no glare issue. The human brain is clever enough to focus on the image you're viewing and ignore any tiny amount of reflection. There are matt screen coatings available, just go buy one if you really want to dull your colours and make the screen a PITA to keep clean.

LightPeak may turn out to be the answer...

5rS7

In what way would be this the answer?!

What LightPeak has got anything to do with the matter? It's not even a format to publish digital media on! It's like claiming that a new type of toaster will solve the problem of internal-combustion engines.

But more to the point - even if it was a portable format to put content on; we live today. It was 8 or 9 years (!) ago that Blu Ray was in the same development stage as Light Peak is now. Have you got 8 years to see, whether Steve Jobs will have some ridiculous response and excuse about LightPeak then?

So no, LightPeak is not a solution. With poor internet speed around the US and the World, there is no alternative to Blu Ray by any means. Even with fast internet, the current alternative is poor sound and 720p. Just as well, you can get a DVD. Do you remember that technology?

Sure. USB sticks and external hard drives do not exist.

I thought that this poster was done with the matter, he/she said it three rants ago.

Besides, an average USB stick cannot hold an average content of a Blu Ray.

I don't think she's ever tried Blu Ray. Has he/she even got a Mac?

BD on a screen in close proximity will not be enjoyed the way it's meant to be.

Just buy a separate BD player or use your PS3/whatever and watch it on a 32" screen from a few feet back, as it was designed for. Or use HDD's for data storgae?

The Mac Pro has been unbelievably overdue, especially considering it is supposed to be the top-performance line of Macs (thus needing more frequent updates to keep up).

I'm surprised Macrumors systematically downplays that. Guys, you have a huge critical mass and I'm sure today even Apple follows you closely. Please do bring up this oddity when you mention Mac Pros, and consider expressing your wonders (I'm sure you do) as to why the Mac Pro has been so neglected to become basically abandoned. It has jumped two releases, and it's nearly two years now. I'm sure many of the Macrumors community are all ears on this.

I kind of disagree with this statement in some ways. The Mac Pro line is still top of the line in terms of performance, which is why I don't think they need to update them as frequently.

However, I do agree that they are due for a refresh at this point. They are still very, very nice computers.

Will the iphone 4 be able to take advantage of USB 3? I am thinking ipod pin connector in one end and USB 3 connector in the other.
Would it be able to gain the speed advantages?

Actually, I'd happily exchange any kind of optical drive in the next iMac for the possibility to install a SSD additionally.

That, plus an updated GPU, and the next generation iMac is mine. I'd actually go for a MP, but I'd pay something like 1600€ extra for a display of the same size and quality included in the iMac. Still uncertain whether it's worth that much extra money. Let's have a look at those new desktops, then :)

Listening to customers.

Stop telling us what you think we want and listen to the customers.
Telling the customers what they want is what makes Apple Apple. If you want a company that sits around waiting for people to tell them what they want, stick with Dell or some other manufacturer of POS beige boxes. You don't lead by "listening to the customers", you lead by giving the customers what they didn't even know they wanted until they saw it. "Customers" don't have imagination; "customers" don't have vision. We already have a lot of companies making the cheap knockoffs and the nerd-pleasing ("OH, look - my new phone has 27 USB ports!") crap. We need at least *one* company that's different, and I'm glad that's Apple.

FWIW, I don't give a toss what comes in this Mac Pro refresh - my 2006 Mac Pro is actually still going strong; it's the first time I've had a computer serve me so well for so long.

In what way would be this the answer?!

This, in combination with higher speed internet, would help bring streaming 1080p, with uncompressed sound, closer to reality.

128Gb Thumb drives, although outrageously expensive now, will likely drop in price significantly by this time next year.

Although I'd prefer to have full BD capabilities on the Mac, at least authoring is possible, making storing HD files for playback possible.

Both BD and DVD will be around for a while, no doubt, as they are cost effective storage solutions.

However, full HD streaming is not that far off - with the advent of reasonably priced 2+ TB drives, storage is not that big an issue.

Really pleased to hear about Firewire, can't wait to see the audio devices that will be made for it.

I agree... but first let them catch up with Firewire 800... all quality interfaces and mixers still run on firewire 400... Apogee, Motu, Presonus, Focusrite, digidesign, Metric Halo, Mackie, Allen & Heath, etc.... all FW400. You can plug them into into a FW800 port, as it is backwards compatible, but they run in FW400.

Or (I wonder) if perhaps FW400 is enough to power and/or run all the channels that these devices can run?

cheers!

Do you think apple will have a trade in program for those who bought the 27inch. god i wish i waited. I wanted USB 3 so badly but i also needed a computer

In what way would be this the answer?!

Bluray sucks as every other optical media. It takes a lot of space inside the computer and it is mechanical.

Internet or distribuition in SD card are better solution.

SDXC can take 2TB and 100+MB/s.

And on a SDHC you can store 64GB and reach i think 8-10MB/s... maybe with some buffering it would be possible. SD takes little space as media and very little space inside the computer. The future are SDXC or better internet streaming.
