I'll probably have to pass...

...I'm a newer convert into the world of Apple. I've got some light familiarity with Macs, but not much. Got my first iPhone in November, And iPad in April.

Now that I'm hip to Apple products, I was going to seriously consider a Mac. Needed to replace my 2+ yr old PC in mid-May and looked at the Mac Pro and was shocked at how out of touch the specs were. I dropped nearly $2200 on a new HP pc instead with maxed CPU, and ram specs. Added USB 3.0 card and an additional internal drive. I do a lot of heavy audio and some video work, so I appreciate the fire power. I can't ditch this pc so soon no matter how cool the specs are on the Pro. I just hope it doesn't take so long for the NEXT refresh or I'll be stuck in this cycle.

no blu-ray, no sale.

how can someone justify getting a 27 inch top of the line iMac and not able to legitimately buy and watch 1080P movies??

It can't be used as lawnmower, either. Just buy a TV and Blue Ray player if that's what's important to YOU.

Bluray sucks as every other optical media. It takes a lot of space inside the computer and it is mechanical.

Internet or distribuition in SD card are better solution.

SDXC can take 2TB and 100+MB/s.

And on a SDHC you can store 64GB and reach i think 8-10MB/s... maybe with some buffering it would be possible. SD takes little space as media and very little space inside the computer. The future are SDXC or better internet streaming.

iMac with second hard drive and raid options?

Will USB 3.0 have more power? I mean, will we be able to plug in ONE connector and be able to fully power an external hard drive or DVD drive or something like that, that usually requires two USB cables at the moment? Or will is be the same as now just faster?

It would be cool if it were a higher power port because Mac notebooks usually only come with very few USB ports, unlike even the cheapest PCs that come with at least 3 or 4 of them. I hate using hubs and I hate having to eject my Time Machine drive just to plug in my camera or my USB pendrive.

This, in combination with higher speed internet, would help bring streaming 1080p, with uncompressed sound, closer to reality.

128Gb Thumb drives, although outrageously expensive now, will likely drop in price significantly by this time next year.

Although I'd prefer to have full BD capabilities on the Mac, at least authoring is possible, making storing HD files for playback possible.

Both BD and DVD will be around for a while, no doubt, as they are cost effective storage solutions.

However, full HD streaming is not that far off - with the advent of reasonably priced 2+ TB drives, storage is not that big an issue.

Again, we are talking about technology that is either not available today or is so expensive that is nowhere near commercially viable for consumers.

Yet people want to enjoy Blu Ray as a media and data backup format today. Not in 5 years, not something else in 7 years - TODAY.

But I think what upset most people is that we haven't heard an honest, professional and technologically focused reasoning about the omission of Blu Ray and I suspect the reason for it is that there isn't any. Steve Jobs or Apple Inc cannot come up with a valid reason, why Macs don't support Blu Ray.

Also, contrary to some simple people's argument, it is not just the matter that Macs don't have built-in Blu Ray drives. It's also that they don't support the technology. I can't imagine what Lord Vader and similar people would use for ripping, but I suspect that they are either on PC or they don't know what they are talking about.

It seems you don't know what you are talking about.

Telling the customers what they want is what makes Apple Apple.

This is what now makes Apple Apple. "You don't need that feature until we offer it and then you need it more than anything else."
MMS, copy&paste, multitasking, (front) camera, good reception, etc...

The lack of Blu-ray is ridiculous. It's not a "bag of hurt", given how many other manufacturers offer it as standard and/or optional.

Why don't you just ignore me then?!

It seems you don't know what you are talking about.

Hey, I thought that I was on your ignore list!

But again, I ask you what you what I asked you before - how do you rip Blu Ray? But most importantly, how do you do it on a Mac?

I would love the higher end Firewire to be included, but sadly I just bought the current 27" iMac. Oh well, maybe I will hold out for light-peak.

Glad to see that those waiting for the Mac Pro update will finally get some attention.

Hdd is even more mechanical and therefore even worse to archive movies in BD quality. Maybe you rip BDs to ssd and your movie shelf is more expensive than your car?
Sadly internet ir today 100x times too slow/expensive for massive movie distribution for masses. And SD cards are 100x more expensive than BD.

Bying windows licence just for ripping BD is also quite expensive and very inconvenient.

"Customers" don't have imagination; "customers" don't have vision. We already have a lot of companies making the cheap knockoffs and the nerd-pleasing ("OH, look - my new phone has 27 USB ports!") crap. We need at least *one* company that's different, and I'm glad that's Apple.

Speak for yourself, please. And I suggest you work on your self-esteem a little.

Oh yes! The awful failure of the CD, DVD, Blu Ray - do you listen to tapes and watch VHS often?

Are you sure that your definition of backup covers the whole idea? 5 good quality BR-RE discs are around $20. That's much less than 1 dollar per GB. How can you beat that with anything else that's suitable for backup purposes?

How much is a 50GB SD card again? Because a 50GB Blu Ray costs pittance.

"Takes a lot of space inside" - come on, apart from the Air, ALL Macs come with optical drive that takes the same amount of space. This is by no means a valid reason for ignoring BR.

And what was that one other people mentioned?

OH right...

Put me on the ignore list and keep quoting me like your friend, Lord Vader

After reading some of his messages i understand why:D

Maybe you should follow him, the two of you could form a club with other people who put Apple Inc's corporate interest above their own intelligence and self-respect.

Bluray is here to stay, ignoring that fact seems really ignorant. Just embrace it. All technical BS aside, some people just like to have a physical product they can display on a shelf. I'd rather get off my ass and physically go pick out a movie to watch than search folders in my PC...ya lazy bums...;)
