thats the one,

make sure your expresscard is not plugged in
run a time machine back-up prior to this

essentially you need a hacked driver, which comes courtesy
of the good folks of hackintosh community.

Steps

(1)
you need the caldigit driver from here

install the right driver (for me was the: . For Mac OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) including non-Thunderbolt & Thunderbolt machines, please use: CalDigit_USB3_Driver_10_8_X_1.3.8.pkg) unzip the program and install the driver

re-boot

(2) Install pacifist from here
download + extract the zip file (this will be required after step 3)

(3) Install multibeat 5.2.1 - from here <please note you need to register with tonymac86 site to download - its free and an awesome site)

(4) Load pacifist, use pacifist which is a program that allows you to inspect certain aspects of a pkg program, explore multi beast.pkg installed from step 3
-click on 1st icon: open package
-open multi beast 5.2.1 pkg
-go to 'contents driversbootloaders'
-then 'content kexts'
-then 'content miscellaneous'
-then 'content usb'
-then highlight ;content caldigit2958usb310.pkg'
-click install at the top of program / it will prompt you that the caldigit kext already exists (from step 1) click replace to install the hacked caldigit driver

-re-boot

once back in osx, plug in expresscard and enjoy super-speed usb3

Thanks for the info!
But that is a lot of work to do just to run 1 card...
I hope somebody comes up with Mac compatible non expensive USB3 cards.

this chesp $16.99 card could also work too! as it based on the same NEC chipset

a lot of work - but works a treat ;)

Really!? Did you find any down side in it?
Like LaCie's USB3 card only supports their own products which was a huge let down...

works with my usb3 go flex drive
i can then plug in my old vertex 3 ssd to usb3 go flex adapter

downside is that i have to unplug the card when booting

after 2 years if searching - finally found an expresscard solution that does not cost me £75 ($100), or limits me to a certain brand of drives

So when ever you are booting up your Mac, you have to replug the card?
Well, thats not a big deal for me :D

Have you tried any other USB3 devices on that card?

Working solution for GMYLE card BC628

I finally got the GMYLE card (BC628) to work with 10.8.3!! I can only recommend this 10$ card if you're ready for some hacking :) Here's what I did (This will probably not work with every GMYLE card as the chipset may vary):
1. Remove the card from the slot
2. Download a patched PXHCD.kext (Link for the one which worked for me, else see below)
3. copy the downloaded kext to /System/Library/Extensions/
4. Open Terminal and type the following commands:
a) sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext
b) sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext
c) sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
d) sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
NOTE: if step c) or d) returns any error don't worry just proceed
e) sudo reboot
5. After reboot open diskutilty and repair permissions
6. Now shutdown your computer
7. Connect your USB 3.0 card
8. Turn on your computer
9. You're already done if it works, else proceed to 10.

10. Open System Profiler and check Extensions (whether the PXHCD.kext is loaded successfully or not..)
11. If it is not listed open terminal and type:
sudo kextload -v /System/Library/Extensions/PXHCD.kext
12. Now check your System Profiler whether the USB Super-Speed Bus is present or not.

13. If the kext did not load automatically but did after 11. you would have to do this after every reboot.
The best workaround I could imagine is:
14. download this shell file: Link
15. Put the load_kext.sh into /Users/Shared
16. Tell OS X to load this on every boot by running:
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook /Users/Shared/load_kext.sh
And accepting with your password. The card should work now after the next reboot; it's also hot-pluggable.

I downloaded the kext from this forum: Link and re-uploaded the 1.0.10 so that you won't have to register for InsanelyMac...
The instructions are partly copied from here: Link
And last but not least Thanks to Apple for explaining Login hooks here: Link

Hope this helps,
Luk

Thanks to nxtlukas I've my card working too! :)

An easy way to do this is download the kext file mentioned in the previous post and use the kext installer at: http://www.cindori.se/#2 which is called kext drop.

Just use this and it will install the kext properly so you don't even have to reboot or fix the permissions on files, it starts working right away!

Have fun!

If you all are still reading this, you guys dont have to do the terminal hack anymore.

Just download the tonymacx86's drivers from hackintosh and just check the USB3 and other drivers.
Without doing anything, you can start using it after restart.

http://www.tonymacx86.com/270-multibeast-5-1-update.html

Here it is.
It will download the whole package so when you install, just uncheck everything except USB 3.0 drivers and install.
I didnt check the LaCie and Caldigit USB3 drivers but it wouldnt hurt to install them.
I just installed the 3rd party USB 3.0 driver.

Thanks to everyone who kept updating this thread. This totally worked for me too on a 15" late 2008 macbook pro. I didn't use Pacifist to extract. I just used the tonymacx86 installer and just checked the USB 3 driver and it only installed that. Restarted, stuck the USB card in, then plugged in my external hdd and its twice as fast. Used black magic to confirm the speed too. I used the GMYLE card BC628 from Amazon. Between this and an internal SSD I'm definitely getting some extra life out of my macbook pro. I know someone stated earlier hubs weren't working but has anybody had any luck with a USB 3 hub with tonymacx86 drivers? If you have what hub?

What about the RELEASED version of Maveriks

Has been working for me since beta.

Have you updated to the release version of Mavericks ? Does the PXHCD driver still work (without kernel panics, which I've read elsewhere people are experiencing) ?

An update would be appreciated.

Yup I have. Running 10.9 Build 13A603
And my Multibeast has been the same from ML, Multibeast for ML.
Never updated to the Multibeast for Maverick but I have no problem.

Just thought I'd leave this here. This is my Late 2011 17" using the GMYLE expresscard with USB 3.0 drivers via MutliBeast Mavericks 6.0.1.

Also, this is time machine from an encrypted Samsung 840 250GB to an encrypted external Samsung 1TB Evo 840 SSD.

Not too shabby, I don't think :)

Does the GYMLE card (or any other USB 3.0 EC for Mac) support UASP?

Just to update this thread. Received my USB 3 Gmyle express card today for my late 2008 Macbook pro running 10.9.2. Got the Mavericks version of Multi-Beast checked the USB3 only installed and up and running with no trouble.

Presently in the middle of a CCC backup and running like a dream.

Got the Gmyle card from the Amazon store.
