Tethering would be nice, but not at another $30 a month.
It will be interesting to see if AT&T uses the same policy as they do with their other smartphones.

Let's not forget that around Nov 2008, AT&T got rid of their $20.00/month Unlimited Data option
that was available with certain prepaid/GoPhone 'plan(s).'

I was so set to play the iPhone/GoPhone 3G sim-card-swap game, too.

I'm glad I balked!

But I digress...

I for one am against this. I can't even get enough bandwidth to update the weather application let alone browse the web on my computer.

D8mn AT&T!!
I wish they would fix the networks they have rather than just keep trying to crash them.

I know that some lucky areas of the country this will be great, but if you actually live where other intelligent people live, then you know all too well about AT&T's sh*t network

I just hope that all of these companies realize that on an "unlimited" plan (even if it is a soft-cap of 5GB) a few hundred megs or even 1 or 2GB of tethered traffic isn't going to make much of a difference and not charge for light tethering. Especially if you're not going over the 5GB soft-cap anyway.

Hopefully the app works without a tethering plan and i can use ~1GB per month tethered without incurring additional charges. Or AT&T can tier their data plans and combine handset and tethered data: $30 for 5GB, $45 for 10GB and $60 for unlimited.

+1

It cracks me up how many people were blaming apple and for the most part calling them liars about tethering, now that someone has found the code that they said was there all along, none of you are coming on and admitting you were wrong. Very Classy.

Has it ever occurred to any of you schmuks out there that ATT is holding up progress? or that the system would be overloaded? BTW for the idiot who said it's the same 2gb whether tethered or on iphone, you are only right in the sense that 2GB is 2GB, otherwise, the computer is going to use more bandwidth for surfing period. How about all the full size video that you may watch, or the flash videos and advertisements. Don't kid yourself, you would be on the computer more if you could use it versus the iphone. I think they know this. Who knows, maybe Apple is even fighting to get it included as part of the unlimited data to draw more consumers to the iphone. I think they are trying to benefit us in order to benefit themselves. Of course, I could be wrong, but at least I am admitting that.

Tethering, copy and paste and Notes sync were 3 of the main features that I wanted to see on the iPhone.

The USB tethering would be nice, but at $30 a month extra, that's a bit much for me. My current Treo 755p under Sprint has tethering included (with the same 5gb cap per month of usage). Hooks up nice to my MBP.

I would want to try the USB tethering at some point with the iPhone 3.0 to see how easy it is to connect to and how well it works.

Btdt

I was poking fun at Apple's usual tardiness to the game, not biggin' myself up.

However, I've rethought it and yes, I would like an applause. If the average idiot like myself can do stuff a decade before Apple announces it as a Great New Thing then I think it's only right that we raise our glasses to the average idiot.

So here's to me, and whoever else just enjoys getting stuff working without the need for a ready meal marketed directly to their stomachs!

A little applause here as were. Many years with Sprint and a BT SE T106. $15 a month extra. Unlimited. Probably still works.

Apple has only been in the phone business for 23 months, a MUCH shorter time period than most all other companies that design and produce cell phones.

Also, the tethering isn't even supossed to be accessible right now. This guy had to hack preferences to get to this option. So how exactly is Apple announcing this as a great new thing? Did you really expect Apple to include every freakin' feature known to man in their very first iPhone OS?

Considering this is ONLY the 3rd major revision to the iPhone OS, Apple is light-years ahead of other phone companies. Who knows what they'll have after 5 years time, which is still way less time than the other contenders.

so far you couldnt because the iphone didnt allow it (unless uv jailbroken before) however rogers policy has always been that teethering is allowed. but i know a few people who have jailbroken and teether and its okay. rogers wants u teether so that u go over ur 6gb data plan.

Tethering has always been encouraged on Vodafone in NZ. But thats because our data charges are ridiculous. I pay $59 NZ ($32 USD) for 1gb per month.

If to turning this feature on and off is simply an apn setting then all you will have to do is visit a website on your iphone that allows you to download a modified apn and apply it over the air. Take unlockit.co.nz (I have no affiliation with this website) as an example of this. Initially the iphone would only work on a subscribed special iPhone data plan in NZ. This apn changer allowed you to use the standard vodafone.net.nz gateway.

The only reason I bring this up is because the guy on tqwitter said he was messing around with apn settings i believe.

iTouch?

I have an old desktop without a wireless card but it isn't close enough to my modem to run an ethernet cable (i mostly use wifi at home). But i have an ipod touch and it would be cool to plug my iTouch into the usb port and have wifi!

*applause*

I think one of the differences that will sprout up will be how fast the iPhone is transferring data. With a full screen, mouse/trackpad/keyboard you can transmit a helluva lot more data than a single window on an iPhone.

In reality I don't see myself using this that much. When I'm in a hotel, I use the free WiFi there. I just see a benefit when I'm actually on the road and at parks/outside.

Okay, I agree maybe idiot was a strong word. Ultimately, I was just trying to get a stir out of you, which I did. I apologize for the way in which I approached it. And for the record, just because I do not post to the forums by no means, means that I am new to it. Been reading macrumors for years now. My intention is to get you all to sit back and reflect about what might actually be going on with Apple versus making an opinion sound like fact. There are plenty of times when I question Apples motives and there is plenty I don't agree with, however, I also realize it is my opinion and conjecture should truly be stated as such.

hope he isn't from canada.... Rogers can recongize the difference and will charge for it...

Actually they can't notice difference from regular iphone internet use, atleast not straight. :)

I just don't understand issue with mobile broadbands in the usa. In here I know lot of people who gave up with adsl and are only using mobile broadband.. (I have one too for iphone, 2mb for 18e/month without limits). Some use basic tethering from phone, some use those usb modems, some use wlan stations what has modem...

And as far as I know there are lot of european countries with almost same situation (don't know about UK).

I don't want to sound like selffish but, why others countries have to suffer from ATT and its problems with tethering? :p

ps. I'm tired to keep my years old phone with me to swap sim into when I'm travelling :(

Totally agreed. Yes, Apple could have put in all of these features and made it a pita to use just like all the other phones I have used in the past. However, they decided to focus on what THEY thought was important and the implementation of those things is almost flawless. Is it perfect? No. But consider the fact that most new phones are trying to emulate iphone now and the sales numbers that apple has. If we weren't willing to put up with the missing features until they were ready to do it THEIR way, then it would have been a complete flop. Somehow, given the statistics and the evidence, they must know what they are doing, regardless of our complaints. And to be able to do it having never made a phone OS before 3 or so years ago is a testament to their perfectionist nature, not their desire to have every feature known to man.
