I'm trying to get this workin on my iPhone 3G T-Mobile NL running 3.0
This is the carrier.plist that i could find

314a3qr.png

As you can see in the apns sections there is no such thing as wap listed...
I've tried it by adding this
apn = internet
password = password
username = iphone

And adding the type-mask -2 to the other internet apn without the username and password.
But this does not work...
I did everything like said in the howto, but i'mm not sure about this part

(b) In the wap dictionary (mine is wap.cingular, sts's was wap.dol.ie), add a new pair. Do not edit the password or username:
type-mask = (NUMBER) -2

Also for MMS, should i be adding these values?

AllowMMSCEditing Boolean Yes
AllowMMSEditing Boolean Yes

mms_proxy 10.10.10.11
mms_proxy_port 8080
mmsc http://t-mobilemms:8080

Does anyone know what i should do to make tethering work? and maybe even MMS?

Thanks!

I hope AT&T offers a "pay as you go" feature with the tethering. Much like text messages, for those that want to purchase an unlimited plan, they can, but for most of us that will only use the tethering once in a while, AT&T should allow us a pay-as-you-go feature. Maybe ten cents a minute (which would be one dollar for ten minutes) or something like that. Most people are not going to use this feature that much. Most people will only use it occasionally.

For those in the uk I spent last night with erica sadun and a few others and created an IPCC carrier bundle update file for 02 uk with MMS and tethering.

https://twitter.com/timmeh/status/1351833678

To install option click update in itunes and choose the IPPC file, then reboot the phone. (3.0 only)

Im afraid your file doesn't work. When I click on 'Internet Tethering' after loading your bundle file, it comes up with a message "Enable tethering on your account Contact O2..."

Is there something else that needs to be done?

I also tried sending an MMS - that doesn't work either.

Sorry lol - maybe its because im on pay as you go?

Works perfectly for me over USB. When I try over Bluetooth it just keeps saying "Maximum connections reached" when I click to connect to the iPhone. Don't care though, I always carry the USB cable with me anyway so it's fine.

Tethering does work, I just tried it. Bar pulses blue, looks awesome. Did it over USB, very easy to set up.

MMS doesn't work, just the same errors everyone's been getting.

how do I turn it back off and on? Currently when I click on it, I just get that error message.

(You had the o2 message, right?)

Yes I had the O2 message. Then I turned BT off and back on, then exited settings, then when I went back in and tried it just turned on.

I have no '~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support' to edit?!?

Ok, on my account, I don't even have a 'Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support' folder. Do I need to create one? According to spotlight, I don't have one anywhere on my machine....

Help!

i'm a idiot.

erm..

this is only for 3.0, I don't have 3.0 i'm signed up to the developer programme but have not payed anything?

I've just changed my ippc file but if I don't have 3.0 it's not going to work is it..

Anyway of getting 3.0 other than paying..?

Is it stable?

Nick

I got tethering working, but when i try to use bluetooth on my macbook its saying out of maxium number of supported network connections.
But on my hackintosh it works ok with bluetooh...

Not sure that mobile broadband is that popular in the UK, but it ain't that difficult to find free Wifi (all of our McDonalds have it for example). Though it is pretty cheap, my cable company charges £5 a month for 1Gb through a 3G dongle which doesn't seem too bad.

Not all mcdonalds have free wifi - I'd say about half do, and where they do, it often doesn't work (of the 2 mcdonalds where I live, one doesn't have wifi at all and one has a broken wifi that won't go past the login page)... Everyone else charges exhorbitant hourly rates (although there's a nice cafe in the centre of Manchester that has Free Wifi).

I have a £5/mo dongle with Three that I use all the time. Everywhere I go I see laptops with dongles sticking out of them - and the stores are going nuts offering free laptops with mobile broadband to all the students, so it's pretty popular.

If O2 wanted to charge for tethering it would have to compete with that, otherwise few people would pay it. OTOH no other phone has a charge for such things. There's the T&C that say you can't use it for the usual things (VOIP, P2P, etc.) but that's standard.

I got tethering working,

Same problem as you J.D., but what did you change to get it to work?

[edit]
Stupid me, I can't read
It's -2, not 2. Forgot the minus.
Its working now, over BT as well. Next is reading up on ISP agreement.

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5H11 Safari/525.20)

I wonder if the carriers are going to start charging for this. My guess is that normal Internet rates will apply.

It's wifi aswell

People don't forget about the wifi deals included with the phone like O2 (uk) offer access to the cloud and a few other major wifi distributors...

I just hope they are more lenient about bandwidth on the wifi.

We all pay for unlimited internet so i think it'd be nice if O2 open this up in the summer even if they do decide to put a cap on. Or they should say give you 10gig tethering limit a month and people can purchase extra after that for the heavy users..

I don't know what all the fuss is about...

in a few months after the release of 3.0, the wonderful dev team will have figured out how to use tethering on iphone without network approvel.

The only issue is whether a. they can tell if we're doing it and b. how much bandwidth we can get away with.

I mean, unless you want to pay for it - then I guess its important.
