Club3D - CAC-1334: 4K 60Hz HDMI to USB Type C Video Cable HDMI 2.0 (Male) to USB Type C (Male) Active Monitor Converter 1.8m/6 Feet

Would work for Nintendo Switch, supports 1080p, no audio but you can use bluetooth headphone.

Great! That’s the cable I tried with the Dell, and it doesn’t work there. Good to see I can keep it to use with the ASD.

I wonder why the audio doesn’t work? That ruins it for me, as I play 2 player games.

The speakers are an USB audio device. That adapter doesn't even have a USB connection AFAICS, so there's no chance that they could work.
But HDMI carries audio, right? When you connect the Switch to with an HDMI cable to a monitor, it carries video and audio together.

Or am I missing your point?

This may because the display has different protocol or driver, or the dongle doesn't support transfer sound.

The speakers built into [most] monitors and TVs are not USB audio devices: they're explicitly designed to work via a HDMI (or DisplayPort, in case of monitors with a DisplayPort) connection.

The Mac-targeted LG UltraFine 4K/5K and Studio Display are different. Their speakers are an USB audio device connected to a built-in USB hub.

The speakers are an USB audio device, so...
1. the Switch needs an USB connection to the Studio Display in order to "see" the speakers. Your adapter doesn't provide a USB connection.
2. even if it did, the Switch's OS needs to have a driver for USB audio devices. Does it? (I don't know.)

Got it. I wasn’t thinking about the way the Studio Display receives audio. Great explanation.

I think the Switch might indeed have USB audio out. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack, but I guess I could just use a Bluetooth speaker.

I tried CAC-1334 with Apple Studio Display (5K+No HDR):
1080p@60Hz, No sound, No HDR

I tried CAC-1334 with another portable monitor (4K+HDR):
4K@60Hz, has sound, No HDR
1080p@60Hz, has sound, HDR

Has anyone tried connecting a PS5 to the Studio Display using the Club 3D CAC-1334/CAC-1332?

Does it output 4K@60Hz to the Studio Display?

It's possible that the adapter outputs 4K60 at HBR2 link rate using four lanes of DisplayPort 1.2 while the Studio Display expects two lanes of DisplayPort 1.4.
However, the display is listed as compatible with DisplayPort 1.2-equipped Macs and supports a tiled 5K60 timing that requires two (four-lane, in case of DisplayPort 1.2) HBR2 connections. Maybe four-lane HBR2 is only possible if the input is a Thunderbolt stream?

i think it may because that apple display EDID does not fit with PS5? I‘ll try EDID modifier.

I got an Xbox Series X working flawlessly with the Studio Display at 4k 60hz and a Switch working at 1080p. It required a little bit of leg work through an EDID emulator.

So first I use a HDMi to USB-C adapter purchased months ago from a random person that was recommended on this Reddit thread linked below. It felt very sketchy at the time just emailing and PayPal’ing them money, but in the end it ended up being great. Definitely a high quality adapter and USB-C cable. I can post pics of it later if anyone is interested. It was $63, or $86 with expedited shipping which I went for and it showed up super quick. It’s a fully unbranded adapter coming straight from China and the person told me they are working on a newer version which may already be ready now. Not sure what the newer version offers.

At the time of emailing them back in October, they sounded very aware of everyone trying to get devices to work with their Pro Display XDR’s and LG Ultrafine’s.

BUT, the Xbox and Switch had very low resolutions by default so I had to use an EDID emulator to trick them into having the option to display in 4k 60hz and 1080. After dropping the EDID device in the mix, I just went to settings and changed resolution to 4k. This is the exact model that I used linked below.

It’s all listed in the manual but for the sake of thoroughness, I set all the dip switches to the up position except number five which stays down from what I recall. Will update here if that’s wrong.

I also tried another EDID emulator that was just a small little non-external powered adapter and it didn’t work. Only the one I linked worked.

There is no sound transmitted to the Studio Display from this whole setup, but I use the official wireless Xbox headset which definitely does the job for casual gaming.

Let me know if anyone has any questions and I’ll try to help. I’m looking for a simplified solution to this myself though, especially one that doesn’t require the EDID emulator.

Side note- It’s very annoying to switch my Xbox and Switch from my tv to the Studio Display with this mess of adapters and all that so I actually just ordered this HDMI splitter from that same EDID emulator company to test out. It looks like a splitter, EDID emulator, and audio extractor all in one. Plus I can link it to my tv and Studio Display at the same time and switch between my Xbox and Switch. It’s pricey and probably overkill so open to any ideas. In the meantime I’ll test it out this weekend when it arrives. Seems like the simplest solution. All I have to do is disconnect my MacBook and connect the hdmi to usb-c adapter.

Hope you enjoyed my rambling here haha.

YES! It is because the EDID!

I tried with
It has an EDID associate with it.

I use it with Wacom Link Plus.

It finally works with 4K@60Hz, No Audio, No HDR.

PS5 → gofanco Prophecy HDMI 2.0 to DisplayPort 1.2 Converter (Red Light: 4K@60Hz EDID) → Wacom Link Plus → Apple Studio Display
What the functionality of the Wacom Link Plus? Is it not possible to use a DisplayPort -> USB C (capable of carry video) cable?

How are you connecting the whole system?

Xbox/Switch -> HDMI -> gofanco Prophecy -> ???

I tried one, it failed. So I ordered new one, arriving this weekends.
I think because the Apple Studio Display is so inactive, that could not directly active the gofanco DP signal to USB-C end.

Yes

Xbox/Switch -> HDMI -> Edid emulator -> Hdmi to USB-C adapter -> USB C cable into Studio Display.

It’s definitely a whole thing but it works.

could you tell us which HDMI to USB-C adapter you use?
I mentioned it in my previous long post. It’s the adapter from the Reddit thread where you email some random person in China and they send it over. Super super random and I have absolutely no clue why they don’t just sell them on eBay, but hey it ended up being legitimate. I think the chip shortage had something to do with it.

And like I said, the person I was emailing was very hip to the fact that people are trying to use their hdmi devices with Pro Display XDR’s and LG Ultrafine’s at the time. It feels like they were creating these adapters and perhaps new versions with that in mind. Definitely email them and see what they say.

Has anybody tried using CAC-1332 the "active" adapter? i know someone tried CAC-1334 but only outputted 1080p, i wonder if the the active one which requires external power via usb would get you 4k. If so it would be a lot cleaner setup then the edid emulator + walcom adapter setup.

And could somebody test CAC-1333 which does not require external power. Thanks in advance!

From your experience @frogcjn (as well as others chiming in here), do you think the following would work:

PS5/Switch
Benfei HDMI to DisplayPort (amazon.com link)
→ StarTech USB-C to DisplayPort 1.2 4K 60Hz - Bidirectional
Apple Studio Display

Since I'm in the EU, I haven't found most of the references devices over here and I was looking for something that I don't have to import. This Benfei thing does look pretty promising but I have no idea about the whole EDID thing to be honest. A lot of comments on Amazon say that PS5 works well with this. Am I missing something here? Would this thing work?

Edit: This does not work, read the post from frogcjn on the next page(s)!

I don't think it will work. You lacks EDID. It is a modifier for HDMI to tell PS5 the display’s resolution and frequency. PS5 could not handle Studio Display well without EDID.

Thank you for getting back to me. Bummer! I'll look for one that has EDID then, thanks.
